7. Gangs of New York (2002)

Five Points was reputed to be the most dangerous slum in the world at this time and Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis) was one of its most notorious characters. The story follows fictitious characther, Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio), who comes back to Five Points to avenge his father's murder by killing Bill the Butcher. Daniel Day-Lewis was outstanding in this film and was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. The main story is fiction, but is set during actual events that transpired in 1863 in NYC.

6. Titanic (1997)

This was a beautiful epic film about the most famous maritime disaster in history. The sinking of the Titanic is one of those senseless disasters that will remain ingrained in our psyche for hundreds of years. This Leonardo DiCaprio movie uses the sinking as a backdrop to a human drama on the ship, the forbidden love affair of two fictitious characters, Jack Dawson (DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), who is engaged to another passenger.

5. Blood Diamond

The impoverished country is controlled and dominated by street gangs that recruit children and turn them into heartless murders. Both DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou as Soloman Vandy are excellent in the film.

It is a chilling and gripping story of one families struggles against tremendous odds. There are so many compelling performances in this film that I cannot name them all but if you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend that you see it soon.

    This is not the "chick flick" version. LOL. I forgot how young he was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I saw the movie in theaters when it was released, but not since.

    I haven't seen all of these movies, but his acting was incredible in 'What's eating Gilbert Grape.' When I heard he was the lead in Titanic, I had a hard time (at first) envisioning him as a leading man . . but he can do it all. I haven't seen Inception (yet) but according to your lenses, I guess I had better.
