Best Low-Profile Video / Graphics Cards For Gaming (PCI-E) May 2012

Ranked #116 in Computers & Electronics, #1,634 overall

Welcome! Here is the list of 18 best low-profile video cards available for PCI-Express. When you have a slim tower desktop or a small HTPC, then you can usually only use a half-height video card. Although the most powerful one is pretty strong, it doesn't compete with best normal size graphics cards. If you want to play all the new games at maximum settings, then you have to get a normal size computer case and a faster graphics card. Before buying, check that you have a sufficient power supply and enough room in your case (some video cards are very long or have big coolers). There are models that take 2 slots and block other PCI devices. Also remember that AMD's minimum power supply requirements are usually exaggerated. For example: AMD Radeon HD 6570 official requirement is a 400W PSU, but some people successfully use it with even 250W-300W power supplies (its maximum power consumption is less than 70W). Also, make sure the card comes with a low-profile bracket, there are many cheap video cards that only have a normal size bracket. Small screwdriver is necessary too, because you usually have to replace the normal size bracket by yourself.

#1 AMD Radeon HD 6850 low profile

AFOX Radeon HD 6850 (AF6850-1024D5L1) is currently the best low-profile video card ever produced. It's significantly faster than NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, but unfortunately it is only sold in Japan. This is the only 256-bit DirectX 11 low-profile graphics card.

#2 NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 low profile

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 is tiny bit faster than HD 6750 and it supports PhysX. But GTS 450 has slightly higher power consumption. NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 plays following games at 1680x1050, highest settings: Bulletstorm , H.A.W.X. 2 , F1 2010 , Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and StarCraft II. You need a good CPU of course, ~4GHz Core i5/i7 was used in these tests.

#3 AMD Radeon HD 6750 / HD 5750 low profile

PowerColor Radeon HD 6750 Low Profile

AMD Radeon HD 6750 is the second best low-profile video card by AMD. AMD Radeon HD 6750 is equal or slightly slower than NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 (it's out of production) in most games. As far as I know, PowerColor is the only manufacturer that currently makes half-height version of HD 6750.

#4 AMD Radeon HD 6670 low profile

HIS Radeon HD 6670 1GB GDDR5 Low Profile

The long awaited AMD Radeon HD 6670 low profile version is about 20% slower than Radeon HD 6750 and GeForce GTS 450, but it has much lower power consumption than the more expensive cards. The low profile HD 6670 was launched over 6 months after initial release of AMD Radeon HD 6670!

#5 NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 low profile

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 should be on par or slightly slower than new DirectX 11 AMD Radeon HD 6670. The only low-profile GTS 250 was made by Sparkle, but it has much lower clock speeds. Normal GTS 250 has very high power consumption, but according to some user reviews, downclocked low-profile version even works with relatively weak power supplies.

#6 NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT low profile

NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT is a graphics card that doesn't have a very good reputation (at least the full-height version, which usually died after few years). It is also usually very overpriced.

#7 ATI Radeon HD 5670 GDDR5 low profile

ATI Radeon HD 5670 is little bit slower than 9800GT, but it's newer, supports DirectX 11 and it has low power consumption. It is powerful enough for running less demanding games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and World of Warcraft with highest settings at low to medium resolutions. Low profile ATI HD 5670 seems to be out of production today.

#8 NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT low profile

NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT is a pretty fast mid-range DirectX 10 graphics card, although it's old and discontinued. NVIDIA 9600GT is not worth buying even if you find a place that still sells it, low-profile 9600GT would be probably more expensive than newer and better cards.

#9 AMD Radeon HD 6570 DDR3 low profile

ASUS Radeon HD 6570 1GB DDR3 Video Card

AMD Radeon HD 6570 is one the newest low-profile video card released by AMD, but it costs as much as faster ATI Radeon HD 5670 DDR5. AMD Radeon HD 6570 and ATI HD 5670 have nearly identical performance if they both use DDR5 memory, as seen from the reviews. Unfortunately there are currently only slower DDR3 versions of half-height Radeon HD 6570.

#10 NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 DDR3 low profile

MSI GT440 1GB DDR3 Low Profile

NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 is the second fastest low-profile DirectX 11 graphics card by NVIDIA, or fastest that is sold today. It's also the best NVIDIA video card that doesn't need an extra power connector. GeForce GT 440 originally uses DDR5 graphics memory, but low-profile variants only use DDR3. MSI makes the 1GB DDR3 version (recommended) and Axle3D makes 2GB DDR3 GT 440.

#11 ATI Radeon HD 5570 DDR3 low profile

ATI Radeon HD 5570 1GB DDR3

If you want a cheap half-height gaming video card that plays most games at reasonable settings, then ATI Radeon HD 5570 is not a bad choice. Radeon HD 5570 prices have gone up since release of AMD Radeon HD 6570, not recommended anymore for the price (~$80).

#12 NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 DDR3 low profile

NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 DDR3 is about as fast as ATI HD 5570, but it's older and it costs much more. There are stronger graphics cards available that cost less than this GT 240.

#13 NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 low profile

ASUS GeForce GT 430 1GB DDR3 Low Profile

NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 (128-bit) is slightly weaker than cheaper ATI HD 5570 and GT 240. It's an OK card if you prefer NVIDIA over ATI or don't want to spend $10 extra for GT 440. Beware, there are a lots of slow 64-bit versions of GeForce GT 430 floating around on Amazon and Newegg.

#14 ATI Radeon HD 5550 DDR3 low profile

ATI Radeon HD 5550 DDR3 is slightly slower than previous cards, but it's not worth the price. This is a pretty pointless video card, it's priced higher than HD 5570 and HD 5670.

#15 AMD Radeon HD 6450 DDR5 low profile

It's pretty hard to find low-profile DDR5 HD 6450, almost all manufacturers use DDR3 memory on this card. This video card is not recommended, it's not much faster than DDR2 HD 4670 and it's priced too close to much faster Radeon HD 5570.

#16 NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 low profile

MSI nVidia GeForce GT 520 Low Profile

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 is only slightly slower than the rare low-profile DDR5 version of AMD Radeon HD 6450. I strongly suggest spending around $10 more for much faster (although older) NVIDIA GeForce GT 430, unless you don't plan to play games.

#17 ATI Radeon HD 4670 DDR2 low profile

XFX ATI Radeon HD4670 Low Profile

ATI Radeon HD 4670 is a relatively old DirectX 10 video card, the low-profile version of it uses very slow DDR2 memory. The DDR2 version of HD 4670 is pretty weak for gaming and it's not that much cheaper compared to HD 5570 and other faster cards.

#18 AMD Radeon HD 6450 DDR3 low profile

Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 Silence

AMD Radeon HD 6450 is a graphics card from the latest AMD video card generation, but its performance is very low and it should be avoided if you want to play new and demanding games with eye candy.

I am Bethany from Afox Corporation, glad to find that our AMD Radeon HD6850 low profile got a No.1 here. We take much count of every comments since we know how importance it is. Our engineers have already modified the fan, a new version (in mid of June 2012) will improve cooler with fan automatic speed control. New version (V2) for HD6850 low profile will be noiseless and with great performance/cost ratio!
Another good news! AFox newest VGA card--AMD Radeon HD7850 low profile which also will be ready in June, it is the most powerful Low Profile VGA card in the world! Let us see what will it become!

Hi Bethany! I'm wondering, is that video card strong enough to play Diablo 3? and is it possible to buy it in Canada? From what I've been reading its only available in Japan? Is that true??

Hey Bethany, I'm looking to buy one of your low profile cards. I live in the UK and haven't been able to find them online anywhere. Are there plans to sell the cards in my country?
  • siouxsie May 17, 2012 @ 3:24 am | delete
I can't find a low profile GTS 450 for sale anywhere, if anyone knows where I can get one then a link would be very appreciated :]
  • Unavailable May 29, 2012 @ 6:50 pm | delete
It's been out of production for a while, I doubt you can find it anywhere.

I went out and forked out the cash for the HD6850. Had to return it. The thing that's *crappy* about the card is that the fans that are fixed on it don't self regulate.

What i mean by that is they spin at 100% all the? f-ing time. When you cram the card into your low profile rig you end up with something that sounds like the drying phase of a touch-less car wash.

I'll stick with my palit gts450 LP until sparkle or palit release something better. Or until AFOX re-designs the card.

That sucks... I doubt there will be a much better LP video card released in the near future. AMD Radeon HD 7750 and HD 7770 are both slower than HD 6850, and their low-profile versions are not here yet. Maybe NVIDIA surprises with something good soon.

This has been a truly useful article for me cheers! Unfortunately I wasn't able to find most of the best ones : either too large for my case or not available. You may want to add the new Sapphire HD6670 Low Profile, that's the one I've finally bought and it's got great reviews : 8w power consumption on idle and 42w in 3D games, really tiny (7.48" x 2.44" x 0.91") and great performance on even the newest games (Skyrim, BTF3...)
Check the hardwareheaven review when you can a minute :)

One warning: just because a graphics card says it is "low profile" does NOT necessarily mean it will fit in your particular case. I just put the above mentioned MSI R5670-PD512 Radeon HD 5670 512MB into a Dell 980 Small Form Factor chassis as an upgrade. I had to modify both the card AND the Dell to wedge that card into the case. You can see some pictures here: http://www.ski-epic.com/2011_low_profile_gaming_graphics_card/index.html

A side note is the stock Dell 235W power supply seems to drive it fine! (Yay!)
The upgrade made a huge difference in game play over my previous piece of junk graphics card, I am very happy so far.

Thanks for commenting. Your link shows perfectly that low-profile MSI HD 5670 is not suitable for very small cases. It's much longer than regular low-profile HD 5570 and GT 430, also why did MSI have to design this strange cooler (some other MSI models use it too)? Nice modding by the way.
