With your role as maid of honour comes great priviledge and also great responsibility. By now you will probably have assisted the bride with many aspects of the wedding, the bachelorette party and the rehearsal dinner. You know that on the day of the wedding you will also have many duties including helping the bride get dressed, arranging the brides veil, holding the bouquet during the ceremony, acting as witness to the marriage, greeting guests etc. Many of these duties will effectively be that as facilitator to the bride. You want her to sail off into the sunset with the man of her dreams and a smile on her face!
However, you will also be required to give a speech. You want to ensure that your speech is one of the most memorable maid of honour speeches, as a tribute to your friend. In this regard, I urge you to adopt the 3 P's strategy to ensure your success.
1) Plan
2) Personalize
3) Practice
I will discuss each of theses elements in more detail to ensure that you receive a standing ovation for your maid of honour speech or you can find more details at bestweddingspeeches.
Best Maid of Honour Speeches - PLAN!
Then Plan Some More!

You don't want to end up writing your speech sometime in between the ceremony and the reception! You need to plan both your time and your speech in advance, so that not only will you have a great maid of honour speech but also the confidence to deliver it!
I advise you to begin planning several weeks in advance of the wedding date as your time will be eaten up with pre-wedding duties as the day approaches.
I have set out below just a few pointers for you.
- Set aside some time when you won't be disturbed to begin writing your speech.
- Take three sheets of paper and entitle them "Beginning", "Middle" and "End".
- Begin researching and making notes of items you would like to discuss or that you feel should be included in each section.
For example: "Beginning" - apart from the bride and groom, their families and guests are there any special guests that you need to greet eg. the wedding celebrant. Does that person have a special title?
Are you going to offer congratulations to the happy couple at the beginning, the end or both?
You may want to tell a story about how you and the bride met or if you introduced the couple you may want to include something about that here.
- Is there anything particular the bride wants you to mention? Maybe someone she wants you to thank on her behalf, for example.
- Effectively use this time to plan and research the stucture and flow of the speech by writing notes on all the details you want to include in each of the above sections.
- Now write your first draft based on your notes and leave it for a day or two.
- Go back over your speech and rewrite any areas you feel you can improve on.

Best Maid of Honour Speeches - PERSONALIZE!

Your friend has chosen you as her maid of honour because you have a close relationship. You may have grown up together or maybe you met at college or at work. Either way, you know each other well and your speech should reflect this . You want to impart to those present at the reception a sense of your friendship and most importantly you want to tell everbody what a wonderful person the bride is. To do this effectively, you need to personalize your maid of honour speech.
You should ensure that the speech is not a mechanical list of greetings and thank you's. Tell people how you met the bride, what the brides most endearing qualities are, how happy you are that she has found the happiness she deserves.
Think of a couple of anecdotes that will support the ideas you want to express. Just make sure they are appropriate! Choose stories that will evoke a smile and leave out the ones that will cause the bride to flush with embarassment. Does the bride have a favorite saying or expression that everybody can relate to?
Think about the bride and your relationship, edit it a little (!) and you will have the makings of one the the most amazing maid of honour speeches! The applause will be the icing on the cake!

Best Maid of Honour Speeches - PRACTICE!
Okay, I am not going to beat about the bush here you need to practice, practice, practice.
When you have written your speech, read over it a couple of times to familiarize yourself with it. Then move on to saying it out loud.
Say it in front of a mirror, in front of your mom, in the middle of the nearest forest where no-one can hear you. It doesn't matter where but make sure you say it out loud. Get your timing right - not too fast or too slow. Get used to saying the words. Rewrite any tongue twisters you find along the way!
You are going to deliver a fantastic Maid of Honor speech. Think of how much you will enjoy the wedding day if you are well prepared and well practiced!
Need a Little More Help?
Still feeling Overwhelmed?
In your mind you are captivating your audience, they are laughing, crying and applauding simultaneously. In reality, you couldn't be any more stessed out if you were to deliver an acceptance speech at the Oscars or give an address to the United Nations.
Remember your friend chose you to be her maid of honour for a reason - you are her best friend and she loves you. So give yourself a break and relax a little.
