Yummy Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
The Monte Cristo Sandwich may be an old world sandwich, but it has many modern variations. Mix together turkey, ham, and cheese and deep fry it to get this mouth watering combination of flavors. You can substitute chicken, add bacon, or top with Dijon mustard before frying. Anyway you cook it, the monte cristo will be sure to please your taste buds. Don't forget to dip it in a strawberry jam or preserves to intensify the flavor.

Deep Fried Turkey And Ham Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe
Making a monte cristo sandwich with sourdough
This is my personal recipe for the monte cristo sandwich. It's a little different and not easy on the waist line but it's delicious nonetheless.
Ingredients
1 quart oil for frying
1 1/3 cup water
2 eggs
1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
8 slices sour dough bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices turkey
4 slices ham
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar for dusting
Directions
1. Heat approximately 5 inches of oil in a deep-fryer to 400 degrees F. While oil is heating, make the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and water. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper; whisk into the egg mixture until smooth. Set aside in the refrigerator.
2. Assemble sandwiches by placing one slice of turkey on one slice of bread, then add a slice of Swiss cheese. Layer on a slice of ham and top it off with another slice of bread. Cut sandwiches into quarters, and secure with toothpicks.
3. Dip each sandwich quarter in the batter so that all sides are coated. Deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown on all sides. Remove toothpicks and arrange on a serving tray. Dust with confectioners' sugar just before serving.
This recipe will serve 8. It is delicious when served with strawberry preserves or blackberry jelly!

A healthier version of this recipe can be made by frying the sandwich in a medium heat pan instead of using a deep fryer.
FryDaddy Electric Deep Fryer
From Presto (05420)
You don't need a 6- gallon oil vat to enjoy deep- fried foods at home--this petite deep fryer makes four big servings with just 4 cups of oil. A compact 7 inches in diameter, the fryer features easy controls for precision frying: it automatically maintains the proper frying temperature, letting you focus on cooking instead of fussing with the controls. The fryer features a snap-on lid, so you can store oil right in the fryer for reuse. All surfaces are nonstick for tidy cleanup (the fryer is not dishwasher-safe and should never be completely immersed in water). A hand scoop is included with the fryer for easy stirring, lifting, and draining, and the 120-volt AC cord unplugs from the outlet, while the attached handle makes the fryer easy to move around the kitchen. The fryer has a two-year limited warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings

History of the Monte Cristo Sandwich
According To Wikipedia
A Monte Cristo is a fried ham and/or turkey sandwich. The sandwich can differ regionally. Traditionally it is dipped in its entirety in batter and deep fried. In some regions of the United States it is served grilled, and in some regions it is served as an open sandwich with just the bread battered. It can also be served as an open sandwich using french toast as a base, with the ham, turkey and cheese piled and then heated slightly under a broiler. The sandwich is often served with fresh fruit or with clotted cream on the side. It is sometimes served with fruit preserves, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or sweet mustard sauce. In the North Country of New York State, Monte Cristo sandwiches are heartier rather than sweet and served with Thousand Island dressing. This variation is often referred to as "Cumberland Head style."

The Best Fryer Cookbook Ever (Hardcover)
By: Phyllis Kohn
Frying has matured from the cholesterol-dripping, artery-hardening cooking technique of yore into a much cleaner, more healthful and certainly more delicious way to prepare meals. With the advent of higher quality oils and fryers, people are able to cook their foods at higher temperatures, searing in their natural juices without making them soggy and laden with saturated fat. Today, frying has become one of the hottest trends in cooking, and as witnessed by the fact that Williams Sonoma alone carries three different types of fryers, home cooks are buying these kitchen accessories in droves.
