Best Netbook 2010

The HP Mini 210

The HP Mini 210 is a new netbook which was designed to replace the Mini 110. It's a 10 inch model which comes with the Atom N450 processor from Intel and lid colors which can be chosen as an optional.

A fix over the Mini 110 is the movement of the mouse buttons under the touchpad, instead of the sides, something that was quite annoying before, but it's OK now.

The HP Mini 210 comes with a good touch pad and keyboard and it looks quite good overall. For the same price as the Mini 210 you can get a Dell netbook with the same specs, so if you like how the HP Mini 210 looks, you have a winner. For a price that is a bit higher you can get a version which comes with an accelerator for HD video and a resolution of 1366x768 on its screen. The design of the netbook is quite elegant and it has lid edges that are curved, corners that are rounded and a body that is narrow and long. If you want it to come in black, blue or red, you will have to pay another $20.

The chicklet keyboard comes from larger models from HP, so the keys are flat and large, with plenty of space between them to allow for a good typing experience. The specialized keys, like Tab or Shift have a decent size, something that isn't always found in small netbooks.

The 720p resolution and the 10.1 inch screen allow for a better experience when viewing HD videos, especially when you consider the processing hardware for HD videos which is built-in. It also helps that it offers a bit of extra space to work with, when compared with other netbooks. The glass is from one edge to the other, which creates a nice effect, though it makes it a bit reflective and glossier than you would normally see.

HP Mini 210-2170NR Netbook (charcoal)

The specs of the HP Mini 210 which was tested included the Intel Atom N450 processor, a 7200 RPM HDD with 250GB capacity, 1GB RAM and a Crystal HD graphics chip from Broadcom (costs $35 extra). The choice for the OS is between Windows 7 Starter and Windows XP.

The performances of the HP Mini 210 were decent, quite similar to what you can find in other netbooks that are configured similarly. You can use this netbook to do what you can with any other similar model, which is reading emails, surfing the web and doing office work. While the performances are decent, they're certainly not enough to use it as the only computer. It does make for a decent secondary device when you need a good mobility.

You should have no issues playing 1080p or 720p videos in full screen mode, but you will need to install the latest version of Flash 10 to be able to stream videos from Hulu or YouTube.

The battery which has six cells lasted for 4 and a half hours during the tests which were done on it, a number which was probably influenced by the presence of the HD video hardware.

Thanks to its price, the HP Mini 210 is a good choice and it has a beautiful design which will appeal to many people. The features which are included make it a decent netbook and you can't go wrong if you choose it.

HP Mini 210-1010NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 4.25 Hours of Battery Life

Acer Aspire AO721-3574 11.6-Inch Netbook (Mesh Black)

Does An 11.6" Netbook Solve The Biggest Problem?

So is an 11.6" netbook an effective alternative to a standard notebook? Netbook computers have been one of the most popular categories of computers over the last couple of years, but they have quite a few drawbacks.

Screen size, keyboard size, processor speed and memory are just a few of the trade-offs you have to make. The latest models are coming with larger screens and getting to be more and more similar to standard notebooks, however.

Let's be honest. When you get into the 11 inch range for screen sizes, the line between a netbook and a notebook is starting to blur. They're getting to be just about as big as a notebook, and the weight is also similar. There are still a couple of advantages, mind you - battery life and price. So don't write them off completely.

Most of the major brands are making 11 inch netbooks now, such as the HP Mini 311-1037NR and the Acer Aspire AO721-3574. These companies have a full range of notebook computers, so they wouldn't be in this market if there wasn't a demand for it. Nor would they be likely to take it on if it was going to cannibalize their other models, which often sell for more money.

The two biggest advantages of 11 inch netbooks were already mentioned above - battery life and price. While the prices are considerably more than a comparable 10 inch netbook, they're still well under what a standard notebook would cost, at least for a reasonably good model.

And because netbooks use processors that consume less power, their battery life is considerably longer. If you need a notebook that will give you a full 8 hours of battery life, a netbook is going to be the only option unless you want to cart around spare batteries and worry about switching them out throughout the day.

Keep in mind that some 11 inch machines, like the Lenovo ThinkPad X100E are not actually netbooks. They are considered "ultraportables" which are generally much more expensive, but a lot more powerful as well. This is something to keep in mind when you're comparing one model to another.

Netbooks are pretty good for simple word processing and other productivity applications. The only issue is that most don't have CD/DVD drives but that's starting to not be much of an issue nowadays with flash media taking over anyways. I'd want one not from Dell or any other company like HP because it probably comes with a lot of bloatware.

I'm considering a netbook for my 15 yr old but still trying to figure out just what they have...like a cd rom? Can she hook up her camera and still video chat etc.
Looks like some of these do have cd drives and some don't.

the only problem I have with netbooks is that the screen size, although of course useful for travel, is severely limiting. Most projects I work on require a couple of windows, and even dealing with a 15" screen can be a challenge!
