Fun DS Kids Games

The best Nintendo DS kids games, featuring games for any age, even games for toddlers and preschoolers.

This list of DS games for kids is based on my experience with my own children, plus recommendations of other parents. I have three boys and a girl who started playing at preschool ages, so the list covers a wide range of ages and the tastes of both girls and boys.

Most Nintendo games do not have a hard and fast age range, so I've arranged my list starting at the youngest ages kids will be able to play well, on their own.

Games for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: New Year's Celebration

Recommended ages: about 2-4
Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: New Year's Celebration has two modes: Story Mode, and Free Play. Story mode is set up like an episode of the show, and takes the child through Kai Lan's day getting ready for a Chinese New Year's celebration. Free Play allows them to play their choice of activities. The game characters give directions verbally, perfect for non-readers. Very easy for beginning gamers.

Some reviewers have noted a distinct similarity in the activities of this game and those of The Backyardigans game, so if your child has one, you may want to skip the other.

Nintendogs

Put a Puppy inside Your DS

Nintendogs Dalmatian & Friends

In Nintendogs, players can feed, care for, walk, and train their puppies, and enter contests with them. They're allowed three dogs in their house at a time, and five in the doggy hotel. My daughter, who is now nine, has had a copy of this game since she was four. When she first got it she would occasionally return a puppy by accident, leading to heartbreak wondering where her doggy went. For that reason I'm putting this with the recommended 6-8 age range games rather than younger kids. Other than that one problem, she could play it by herself with very little guidance.

The difference between the versions is which six breeds the player can choose from at the start. The other breeds can be unlocked as the game progresses.

Dalmatian & Friends, above, starts with: Beagle, Boxer, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Yorkshire Terrier.

The others are below:

Me and my son love The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass. We haven't finished it, though. We are diehard Zelda fans! Always have been and always will be. Gosh, I miss playing! Thank you for sharing your great lens, and I'm wishing you an awesome weekend!

Kirby games are great for kids. Kirby Canvas Curse, Kirby Squeak Squad, Kirby Superstar Ultra... all great DS games. (There's even a fourth one on the way!) Kirby's Adventure on the NES was my first game when I was 5 so I'll always be partial.
