What to Wear to the Revolution?

Occupy-Wall-Streeters capture hearts and minds by holding up cardboard with witty slogans. But signs get cumbersome. Why not just wear your message on a t-shirt?

Lucky for activists with weary arms, entrepreneurial creative-types are whipping up t-shirts to fill the need. Type in the keywords "Occupy Wall Street" at sites such as Zazzle or Cafepress, and hundreds of t-shirts will fill your screen. Truly democratic, these on-demand print sites let anyone and everyone upload a design that can be viewed in an online marketplace. When a shirt sells, the company makes it, sends it out, and pays the designer his or her cut. Buying a custom t-shirt supports an individual entrepreneur, so that's cool. But with tons of hungry artists submitting designs and no quality-control filter, these sites have waaaay too many designs to sort through. Some are clever and cool. Others not-so-much.

To help you find the gem within the dross, I've compiled a few of my favs for your perusal, including a few of my own. If you want more info on a shirt, click on its pic. By the way, $10 off at Zazzle through this link for my friends until end of 2011.

GREED and the Wall Street Bull

The iconic Wall Street bull posterized in the graphic style made popular in Obama's Change campaign. Below it reads "GREED." Sums in all up nice and tidy in one word. I made this one myself and you can get it on shirts, mugs and bumper stickers.

Get Up Stand Up

If you want to change the world, take Bob Marley's advice: Get Up Stand Up. Sinzano typestyle in green red and gold.

Greed is not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things

If you are as old as I am, you may recall a simple poster of the Vietnam War era. A yellow background with a single flower that looked like it was drawn by a child. It read "War is not healthy for children and other living things." That image and its wise sentiment stuck with you. In homage to the power of the original, here's my version, updated for Occupy Wall Street.

Peace Jobs Justice

Peace, Jobs, Justice. That's all we need. (Well, that, and a little love). Done up tie-dye in groovy type against a black background.

CEO Pay vs. Worker Pay

A graphic can speak louder than words. According to experts, the average CEO makes more than 185 times what the average worker makes. This shirt design compares 185 green squares with one lonely red one.

Occupy the Voting Booth

Setting up camp in the square is one thing . . . but taking back power through the ballot box: now that's a revolutionary idea! Check out the
"Occupy the Voting Booth" t-shirt.

Let Them Eat Cake

Marie Antoinette was clueless about the plight--or the power--of the people. When told the people were hungry and had no bread to eat, she supposedly said, "Let them eat cake." But later the famous queen got her head chopped off. This clever design reminds the fat cats what happens to those in power who brush off the masses.

A Food Blogger's Designs at CafePress

This Michigan food blogger came up with some clever designs and put them up at Cafepress. His blog lastoneeating has more designs. Check them out. I love that people are being so creative.

Making Money Off the Movement?

OK.OK. So is it ironic . . . or even uncool . . . to try to make money off the movement? I wrote a blog post on my thoughts about what to wear to the revolution and why Zazzle t-shirts might be just the right fashion statement.
