Stages of Baby Food

What are baby food stages?

baby eatingBaby foods are broken down into three levels of consistency: stage one, two, and three, according to their consistency. Stage one will be loose and watery, while stage three will probably have chunks of unblended food for them to chew on.

Stage 1
For babies ages 4-7 months (approximately). Your baby will be ready to begin eating baby food solids when they are about four months. Stage one is practically a liquid, but it still takes some getting used to for baby. They might resist, but the key is to keep trying again and again. Eventually, they'll come to like jarred food, maybe even more so than their milk!

Stage 2
Stage two is when your baby is ready to move onto a little bit more textured foods, as well as introducing some new tastes. This could be meat, spices, or veggies with a little more taste to them. These are thicker, however are still smooth. The transition from stage 1 to stage 2 will probably be pretty smooth. If it isn't, you can try blending stage one and two jars together to get them used to it (sweet potato stage 1 with stage 2 sweet potato = something in the middle). The amount of food in stage two is also more than stage one (usually by about 30% or so).

Stage 3
Stage three is getting your baby ready to eat solid whole foods. These contain even more texture, and usually have unblended chunks in them. It will also introduce more complex tastes like a real meal for adults. Some of the stage three foods available today are very interesting and smell great if you heat them up! Stage three is also a point at which some babies might become a little difficult (like my baby!). My daughter will gag if there are any chunks in her baby food, so she is still on stage two. However, she likes to eat other "real" foods like bread, puffs, and fruit. She just doesn't like stage three! The amount of food in stage three is also a little bit more than stage two.

Earth's Best

The most popular organic baby food on the market

Earth's Best Earth's Best has the best selection of different organic foods for baby. All of their food is available in glass jars. Those glass jars can be recycled, as opposed to some plastic which cannot (and contains BPA often times). The range of flavors is pretty impressive, and most babies seem to like them. Some of my daughter's favorites are Apple Butternut Squash, Carrot Tomato (smells like pizza!), Apples and Blueberries, Apple Turkey Cranberry, Sweet Potato Cinnamon, Mango and Banana, Green Bean Casserole, and Pears.

Diapers.com 99% of the time has the cheapest price available online. This is the site where I purchase my baby food from, which makes it very easy. These bulk orders cut down on grocery shopping trips, too.

Happy Baby

Gluten, soy, and dairy free baby food

HappyBaby organic baby foodHappyBaby organic foods are available in pouches. These are easy to squeeze into bowls and serve to baby, either at room temperature or heating slightly (always test to see how warm it is before serving). HappyBaby has many unique flavors, like mango and spinach, for example. Who would have thought to combine those two flavors? It's one of the only ways I can get my daughter to touch anything green, so this brand is a plus in my book. They have received largely excellent reviews from customers. Their Stage Three foods are especially tasty sounding, and smell terrific when heated.

Ella's Kitchen

Hearty tastes and healthy choices make delicious baby food!

Ella's Kitchen organic baby foodThis is a brand I just discovered after wondering into Toys R' Us. The food was on sale, and I decided to give it a try because of the unique flavors they offered. Like Plum Organics and HappyBaby, they offer their food in pouches, which are really convenient. There are some really unique combinations from this company, like Sweet Potato + Apple + Pumpkin + Blueberries. This must be very rich in antioxidants! My daughter loved it, and I will be buying it again soon. It was a great way to switch up her current meals with something fresh, yet giving her different flavors she was already used to. Customers have been very happy with this brand, and babies seem to really like it too. They also offer blended fruit for toddlers, available in the same easy-to-use squeeze pack containers. These are great for travel when a bowl and spoon may not make sense (or would make a huge mess!). I used it once already and it worked perfectly, without a hitch! She even ate it at room temperature to my surprise.

Plum Organics

Easy to use, convenient food pouches for on-the-go eating

Plum OrganicsOf all of the organic baby food brands, my daughter seems to prefer this one the most. The pouches are a little bit bigger than some of the other brands - 4.5 ounces. This has been a really good transitional food for her between baby food and solid whole foods. She really loves the Blueberry, Pear, and Purple Carrot blend, Pear & Mango, and especially Pumpkin & Banana. However, I usually only feed these two her once or twice a day because the size is a little bigger (she seems to do best with a smaller size for breakfast).

Like many of the other organic baby foods, this is packaged in a disposable pouch. Maybe it isn't as green as a glass jar which can be recycled, but you can't beat the convenience. In terms of the taste, it seems to be my daughter's favorite. Purple Carrot blend and Pumpkin Banana blend have to be kept on stock at all times! I order them by the case to save money, and since they aren't readily available at my local grocery store (and more expensive). I'd consider this one of my all time baby essentials in terms of food.

Sprout

Tasty treats for baby from Sprout Organic

Sprout Organic baby foodSprout is a brand that I reserve for special treats. When I opened the first pouch of Roasted Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, I was surprised at how wonderful it smelled -- just like apple pie filling! My daughter LOVED this (who wouldn't?). However, after reading the reviews, I noted that the first ingredient is juice, and not whole fruit. This makes it sort of like a dessert or special treat, so I only feed this to her once a week or so. The sugar content is high, so don't rely on these flavors for your baby. Instead, think of it as a "sometimes" treat. Nevertheless, she loves them and they are very convenient (contained in a sealed pouch).

Gerber Organic

A line of classic baby foods from Gerber

Gerber Organic PrunesGerber has its own line of organic food for babies which I do buy from time to time. The one I regularly buy is the prunes 1st Foods Organic Prunes. She still enjoys these even though they are stage one. What I do to make it more "toddler" is to thicken it with rice cereal. These are high in calorie, so one tub might be enough for your baby for breakfast. If they still seem hungry, go ahead and make up another! Keep in mind this is prunes, so it's going to keep them very regular because of the fiber. Also offered from Gerber Organic are organic carrots, bananas, pears, and sweet potatoes. The second stage foods evolve to different blends like Butternut Squash and Corn, and Apple and Sweet Potato.

Buying organic all the time isn't always an option, especially when budgets are being considered. However, it can be worth it! Babies and toddlers are the most important to avoid toxins and pesticides.

Adding Rice Cereal to Baby Food

Incorporating grains into meal time

HappyBellies organic rice cerealTraditionally, rice cereal is added to breast milk or formula for babies to eat. As they grow older, it can be thickened. Rice cereal can also be added to baby food if your baby is having a tough time eating it. Some babies will have a tough time getting used to the runny consistency of stage one foods. Adding a little bit of rice cereal will thicken it up. Keep track of how much you add to your baby's jarred food so you can see how much rice cereal you still have to feed him/her for the rest of the day. What I have always done was add the rice cereal right to the baby food, and not have rice cereal with milk. She didn't like rice cereal and milk, so we kept it this way and it worked out just fine!

I still think nothing beats pureeing fresh, seasonal, organic products. The nutritional benefits of a fresh, non-processed, homemade product is overwhelming compared to even the highest quality organic baby food line.

My Daughter's All Time Favorite Baby Food:

Pumpkin & Banana by Plum Organics

Plum Organics Baby Food, Pumpkin & Banana, 4.22-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 24)

Amazon Price: $27.16 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

Plum Organics has been enormously helpful with feedings on the go, and the actual food is high quality, organic, and she loves every single variety. There's a little bit more volume to the pouch of food as well. Need to feed the baby on the go, but don't want to bring a spoon, bowl, or find someplace/somehow to heat up the food? Not a problem, because these pouches are delicious at room temperature for babies, too. My daughter's favorite variety is the Pumpkin and Banana variety seen here. Every time I say "do you want pumpkin banana?," her face lights up with a gigantic smile awaiting her favorite treat!
