Sometimes the best pick might be one of these small mammals. They are fairly easy to take care of, but with the benefit of actually being able to touch them. You can still pick up a guinea pig and learn how to hold and pet them. They are still a little work to take care of though. Beagle: These dogs are friendly, smart, and not too big, making them very suitable for kids.They are quite active and like to have a yard to run around in.

Cairn Terrier: These active little dogs seem to have a natural affinity for kids. They can keep up with them and tolerate just about anything, but are still gentle.

CollieThese are both very calm, gentle and tolerant breeds that often do well with children.

German Shepherd Dog: This breed is extremely loyal and protective, but has to be well-trained.They are playful and like to have a lot of area to play.

Mixed-breed dogs: Mutts are typically well-balanced and intelligent. They come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. It will make you both happy to rescue him from a shelter too! This is a good route to consider. Plus this way, if things don't work out, you can bring him back.
