Best Pets For A Family

Ranked #9,529 in Pets & Animals, #242,788 overall

The best pet for your family.

Or should I say how to be the best family for your pet? Animals are a lot of work and you need a lot of devotion, time, and money to take care of them properly. Make sure you are up to the task before taking on this huge responsibility. Remember not everyone needs to start off with a dog. There are several different pets for the different needs of your family. I hope this lens helps you decide the level of responsibility you are ready for. Have some fun doing through this with your kids and see what they think they are ready for!

Fish

Please don't roll your eyes just yet. Fish can be a fun project and lesson of responsibility with your kids. Putting together and picking out all the decorations and rocks and what style tank you want can be really fun. You can go anywhere from a little beta or goldfish tank to a medium sized freshwater, to a huge salt water tank. Lots of options here.

If you live in an apartment and work a lot and kids are in school, this is a fun way to teach your child how to take care of an animal. Just remembering to feed it daily might be a good lesson for some.

Small Mammals

Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, and Bunnies

Sometimes the best pick might be one of these small mammals. They are fairly easy to take care of, but with the benefit of actually being able to touch them. You can still pick up a guinea pig and learn how to hold and pet them. They are still a little work to take care of though. This is a great starting place with kids to teach them responsibility of having to feed them every night and keeping their cage clean. Yet it is nice you can still leave for a vacation without having to get a "pet sitter."

Cats

Cats are so loving as pets. They are more independent then dogs, but are still a lot of responsibility. You can leave for a weekend vacation without having to worry too much about your cat. But at the same time, cats do need lots of love. If you don't have time to pet and play with your cat for a portion of your day, then cats aren't the pet for you. Before adopting a cat, make sure you have enough money for shots, check ups, cat litter, and all the care they will need. Once you have decided on a cat you will be very happy with your choice. Cats can become your good friend and cuddling companion. There's nothing like falling asleep to your cat paw pushing and purring next to you.

Dogs

My daughter's puppy Trinity

Have you thought about all the other pets but decided you want a dog? It is true that a dog can be a man's best friend! They are very loving and great companions. Dogs are huge responsibilities, and for many years. If you decided you are up for the task then congratulations. I'm sure you're dog will make you happy for many many years to come. Picking a dog as the pet you want is just one step. Here are some things to consider:

* Do you want a puppy or do you want an older dog?

* You will need find a dog with a good temperament.

* Consider the energy level you want. Do you live in an apartment in the city, or are you out in the suburbs where you have a fenced yard?

* Do you have children? Some breeds have a better temperament with children.

Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever: These breeds are usually great with kids and pretty smart, but they can be hyperactive if they do not get enough exercise. If you are considering this breed, you should have a yard they can run around in.

Poodle: Poodles are very smart and have a great temperament. Plus, you have a size choice - toy, miniature, or standard. Poodles do need lots of grooming though.

Bichon Frise: This breed loves to play, but is not usually too hyper. It is also a small dog, which is perfect for your kids and apartments. Regular grooming is necessary.

Beagle: These dogs are friendly, smart, and not too big, making them very suitable for kids. They are quite active and like to have a yard to run around in.

Cairn Terrier: These active little dogs seem to have a natural affinity for kids. They can keep up with them and tolerate just about anything, but are still gentle.

CollieThese are both very calm, gentle and tolerant breeds that often do well with children.

German Shepherd Dog: This breed is extremely loyal and protective, but has to be well-trained.They are playful and like to have a lot of area to play.

Mixed-breed dogs: Mutts are typically well-balanced and intelligent. They come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. It will make you both happy to rescue him from a shelter too! This is a good route to consider. Plus this way, if things don't work out, you can bring him back.
