In the San Jose area, most expats agree that the best places to live are in Escazu and Santa Ana but we will also go into other corners of Costa Rica that are also popular living spots.
Escazu, Costa Rica
This is probably the number one place to live in Costa Rica for expats as it is located only 5 miles from the city of San Jose and offers many amenities that are appealing to expats such as grocery stores that offers delivery and food from other countries like AutoMercado to modern shopping malls and plazas and even a 3D Imax theater.Other amenities that attract many expats are its fine restaurants, night life its golf course and the ability to find other expats in the area.
The average temperature of Escazu is about 75-80º F year-round.
Expats are flocking to this area of Costa Rica and buying Costa Rica Property in Escazu; however, the price of real estate in Escazu has dramatically increased over the year because of its influx of expats moving to that area along with many new businesses in Costa Rica establishing a foothold in that area.
Books About Costa Rica
Santa Ana, Costa Rica
Santa Ana is a relatively new hot spot for expats in Costa Rica becoming increasingly more popular as an alternative to Escazu.Offering many amenities such as modern residential developments, close to many fine international and private schools, close to some of the top private hospitals in Costa Rica and close to many great shopping areas.
Buying property in Santa Ana is considered a bargain in comparison to Escazu but the prices of real estate in that area of Costa Rica are increasing rapidly making lots and land a good investment.
As Costa Rica has begun to attract more foreign companies in establishing call centers and branches, many of these companies have opted to settle down in Santa Ana which in turn has added to the real estate boom in that area.
Moravia, Costa Rica
Moravia is one of the less known gems in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Even though it is not as popular as Escazu because it is not as modern and convenient as Escazu in terms of amenities from home, it is one of the better places to live in Costa Rica.I am adding Moravia to the list as a friend of mine who owns a Costa Rica real estate company told me that it does have a nice expat community in the "Los Collegios" section of Moravia. Yes, it is the section of Moravia that holds many universities including the Collegio Agronomo which is the College of Agriculture.
If you are a lover of music, the you are in the right section as Moravia is home to the Sifonica Nacional or the Nacinal Symphony. Security is decent as they are many governmental buildings in that area like, ORT Órgano de Reglamentación Técnica and CONAC Consejo Nacional para La Calidad
Jaco Beach, Costa Rica
Jaco Beach has been one of Costa Rica's top 10 beaches for many years as it is not only a haven for surfers and backpackers but due to its closeness to San Jose.Over the years, Jaco Beach has turned from a sleepy little beach town to a booming small town that now has its own movie theater, modern shopping centers and a large array of clubs.
In the past 10 years, Jaco Beach has attracted loads of investors that have put up casinos, luxury condominiums and gated communities in the area thus turning Jaco into a popular destination for expats.
One thing to check out is its yearly surf competition that brings thousands of people to this small beach town!
Come Live in Costa Rica
They are many more hot spots for expats to live in Costa Rica as it can be seen from the real estate in Costa Rica boom. Real estate is probably one of the more popular ways to invest in Costa Rica alongside with medical tourism and eco-tourism which is why the above living destinations have become so popular.

- I put Atenas on this list, if only because the AARP listed as one of the best places to retire. The fresh mountain air of this coffee-growing region is wonderful. It is also away from the hustle and bustle of the central valley, but close enough for quick trips to do shopping. It is also closer to the beaches than Escazu and San Antonio.

- Very nice, I'm not sure if Jaco should be in there though. Sure there is a bunch of Americans that live there but I can think of better beach areas like Manuel Antonio to live in.

- Hi KathyT, you are welcome for the information. I just added a section about Moravia, Costa Rica which I believe is a great spot to live even though it is not as heavily populated with expats as Escazu and Santa Ana.

- Thanks for this info - we're planning to visit Costa Rica next year if we can - and are looking for all the info we can muster! I found an expat forum, so I'll check & see what they're saying about Escazu, Santa Ana, and Jaco as well. I've always been partial to vacationing in the Carribbean, but I'd certainly consider the Pacific coast as well. We'll see what happens! Would like to hear more if you decide to add to this lens. :) Kath

A Bears fan from the 70s on, but I don't let that influence my wagering.
