Looking for Places to Photograph in Maryland?

I wanted to find a great place to photograph a large number of interesting birds and was looking into different places to travel to. Then, I discovered that the Conowingo Dam, which is one of the best places in the United States to photograph eagles, gulls and any number of other fascinating birds was literally up the street from me. I started wondering what else I was missing and decided to start keeping a record of all the great places to photograph things right here in Maryland. If you know of a great building or site for photographing architecture, animals, or fascinating action in Maryland, please feel free to share your favorites so I can visit them as well.

Is it better to photograph local places or to hop a plane and head to exotic locations to find great things to photograph?

Local places until you get yourself familiar with the camera and then explore the exotic.

Oh, exotic all the way! You can always shoot things that are close by another time.

I shoot a lot of photos in the Chippewa National Forest and in Voyageurs National Park. But I'm not opposed to travel. I spent two weeks in Maryland once, and I got a lot of great photos from MD, Virginia and Pennsylvania. I particularly enjoyed the "Eastern Shore"

Glen Echo Park is a lot of fun to photograph. Definitely a unique spot! You can also check out www.placestophotograph.com for other ideas.

Best Places to Photograph in Maryland

Anita C. Leight Estuary Center
A nice little hike with a few spots that have some very nice local critters to photograph. This is a good place to head to with the kids when you're hoping for a few nature shots but want them to have fun, too.
Eden Mill Nature Center
There are supposed to be some mud burrowing beavers here, but I didn't see them when I visited. I did see turtles and a few birds and a really awesome caterpillar.
Marina Park in Port Deposit
You can get a nice shot of a few bridges and will usually see a heron and some gulls here. Ducks and geese also frequent this spot. In town, you will see a lot of historic buildings.
Antietam Battle Field
There are a ton of birds here and some great memorial type stuff, too. Right now, there are really only herons and I can see them up the street, so I'm waiting til spring to go.
Plumpton Park Zoo
It may not have the variety of the Maryland Zoo at Baltimore, but I do enjoy visiting the Plumpton Park Zoo to get some close ups. This zoo is a small rescue zoo that recently changed ownership and is being almost completely redone. Animals that are particularly easy to photograph because of their enclosure design include a zebra, a giraffe, two camels and some llamas.
