Songs of the Letter People

I grew up listening to "The Letter People" on my record player in the late '70s and early '80s. The energy and creativity in these songs stayed with me into adulthood. I searched online and bought a Songs of the Letter People CD for my first daughter to learn the same Letter People songs that I grew up with.

Unfortunately, they changed them! I'm guessing having only 5 girls and 21 boys wasn't politically correct (not to mention poor Mr. X had a horrible song that definitely needed to be redone).

I've created a playlist on Grooveshark with a few of the new Letter People songs for you to listen to before you consider buying your own Letter People CD.

A Modernized Alphabet Recognition Program for Preschoolers

I'm partial to the original songs of the Letter People mostly because of the memories I have of them in my own childhood. However, I took an open mind and tried this "Meet the Letters" DVD when I read that 12 - 24 month old children were able to master letter recognition of both upper and lowercase letters after watching this DVD for two months.

My first daughter (now five) did not master letter recognition in two months using the Songs of the Letter People from my childhood.

However, my second daughter (18 months) has been watching "Meet the Letters" for a few weeks and seems to be picking up the letters very easily. I'll report back in another month with a better understanding.

Differences between the New and Original Songs of the Letter People

1. In the original there were only five MISS letters (all vowels).
2. In the original there were 21 MR letters.
3. All girl letters were MISS in the original, in the modern version they are MS.
4. Several songs were completely redone in the new version including Mr. X, and Mr. R.

Mr. R - Ripping Rubber Bands

I guess they decided it was a bad idea to encourage kids to rip rubber bands so the new version is Mr. R raises the rosiest roses and wins all the rainbow ribbons.

I grew up on the letter people and was looking for it to get for my 3yr. old son. It is hilarious to me that you mentioned Mr. M as being the most memorable, because every time I try to explain what the Letter People are to others, I always sing Mr. M's song. I loved the letter people!
