Best Quiet Toys

Ranked #8,480 in Parenting & Kids, #298,802 overall

As soon as you speak its name it is gone: QUIET!

This lens is for you mothers and fathers that need to keep the kids quiet and entertained for a few minutes or just long enough to grab a nap while your sweet heart watches them. Quiet is rare and if encouraged can even perpetuate itself. If you buy noisy games and toys your house will be busy and noisy, if you get something that can keep them calm, you may just get through the day without a splitting head ache. And though a drum set might encourage little Tim to express himself artistically a drum set is not quiet.

I am an uncle many times over and will be a father in a few short months. Below I have included toys that I have enjoyed or that I have enjoyed playing with my nieces and nephews. They are toys that I would consider for my son or daughter. They are both quiet and fun a good combination.

Coloring

Coloring has always been a fallback for quiet time. It is a great way to develop little Tim's artistic capacities while saving you money on aspirin. I will always remember one specific evening that me and my wife were coloring with my niece. She was having my wife draw pictures and she was 'helping.' My wife drew a snake for her and she insisted it needed teeth. The teeth she added were orange and red and resembled fire more than teeth. Me and my wife had a good laugh and our niece had a good time while her mother and dad had a few minutes to themselves. Below are a few good suggestions for coloring books. A girl will always love a princess coloring book.

Stuffed Animals

Whether it is playing tea, zoo, or playing house, a good collection of stuffed animals gives a kid a variety of options. Further more if little Jane decides to launch a toy at you as you nap to get you to come play it will hurt less if it is stuffed with fluff like a certain bear we have heard so much about.

Picture Books

The ideal kids book has both a good story if you child insists on having a story before bed, and good pictures that can entertain. My personal favorites growing up were Dr.Seuss books. I still enjoy reading these treasures. My personal favorite is "Oh the Places You'll go." Recently we had a couple of friends over. They brought their two daughters. I sat and read my collection of Dr. Seuss to their four year old while my wife chatted with our friends. This gave her mom and dad a chance to relax and enjoy the company of friends while their daughter was immersed in a world of her own. As I read her "The Cat in the Hat." She laughed and and smiled, and as I said oh no when i read that the mom was coming she told me not to worry the cat has a car to clean it all up. She wasn't hearing the story for the first time and loved every minute of it. Dr. Seuss had a way of writing that has captured the imaginations of generations and will for generations to come.

Fridge Magnets

The ABC on the fridge are a staple of childhood. I remember many hours in front of the fridge putting up misspelled words.

Zome Tool

These are a good substitute for building blocks and Legos that seem to be relatively quiet. Blocks clang together and Legos rustle as they shift. Zome Tool toys are a mix of plastic balls with holes and plastic convector rods some of which have angles. They will bring hours of constructive play and quiet to your home.

The iPad

This may not seem like a very practical suggestion for a kids toy, and it is not. This is a suggestion for a toy for you, on which you can put applications that can entertain the kids when you need a moment of silence, or a distraction. There are hundreds of free games, many are free or very in expensive. This will be a great tool, toy, and source of relief in your life.
