Best Raw Food Recipes
A lot of people have asked me to post some of my favorite raw food recipes, so I've decided to oblige. These are just a few of my favorites. I'll try to add more when I can!
Pineapple Mango Salsa
This is my fave. I eat this by the bowlful!
2 cups diced raw pineapple
2 cups diced raw mango
1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro (fresh, not dried!)
juice of two limes
celtic sea salt and black pepper to taste
Just stir together and enjoy!
Salsa Soup
You guessed it. It's soup that tastes like fresh salsa!
4 fresh plum tomatoes, cored
1/2 small sweet onion
handful of fresh cilantro
1/2 to 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded
juice of 1 lime
celtic sea salt, to taste
Blend all ingredients well in a blender or food processor. Serve as is or top with diced tomato for extra texture.
Raw Sushi
2 sheets raw (untoasted) Nori seaweed
6 leaves raw collard greens or other large, raw greens
matchstick carrots, zucchini, cucumber, or other vegetables
nama shoyu (raw soy sauce) to taste
Lay one sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat or plastic wrap. Sprinkle VERY lightly with water. A nice misting spray bottle works great. DO NOT make this very wet at all! Place 3 leaves of collard greens on the nori, overlapping. Put veggies in a row across the collard greens, about 1/2 inch from the edge that faces you. Use the mat or plastic wrap to roll and TIGHTLY wrap the veggies inside the nori. Spritz with additional water if needed to seal the edge. Enjoy as is or cut into pieces with a very sharp knife. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve with nama shoyu for dipping and enjoy!
My Favorite Green Smoothie
This is a great way to get your raw greens if your tummy gets upset when you eat them. Blending breaks them up and makes them super easy to digest, and you can't taste the greens at all!
1 banana
1 cup cored strawberries
1 cup mango sorbet (or other natual sorbet)
2 tbsp. agave nectar
4 leaves fresh kale, collard greens or other greens
Just blend until very smooth and drink up! PLEASE blend this until it's very, very smooth. The smoother it gets, the more pleasant it is to drink AND the easier it is to digest and assimilate!
Green Lemonade
This is a refreshing beverage that is perfect for breakfast! It gets the digestive system going and provides amazing nutrition.
juice of 4 lemons
4 fresh apples, juiced
fresh greens, juiced, about 1 pound of kale, collards, watercress, etc.
high quality water
raw agave nectar, if desired, to sweeten
Just juice everything and add water to taste and enjoy! Some people will like more water to lighten the taste, and some people will enjoy the sweeter taste of this drink with raw agave nectar added. Agave nectar is great, because it tastes very sweet, but it has a much lower glycemic load then other sweeteners, so it doesn't affect your blood sugar as badly.
Cauliflower Couscous
I just love the texture of couscous, but it's something I can't have anymore, so I make something very similar from raw cauliflower!
1 head cauliflower, cut into florets with as much stem removed as possible
1 pint of cherry tomatoes, cut in halves
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/8 cup fresh cilantro, minced
juice of one or two lemons or limes (to taste)
celtic sea salt and black pepper to taste
Put the cauliflower in a food processor and pulse until the texture is somewhat like couscous. If you've never seen couscous, it will be rough and grainy, with the bits a little larger than grits, but smaller than rice.
Now, just mix the remaining ingredients together to taste and refrigerate. The refrigertation is important, because it allows the flavors to blend very well and it makes the flavor of the onions more mild. You should leave it in there for at LEAST an hour, but six hours is better. (Sometimes it is hard to be that patient, though, because this stuff is sooooo good!)
Blueberry Goji Smoothie
This smoothie is unbelievably high in antioxidants, making it very, very good for you! Goji berries are said to have the highest antioxidant content of any food ever measured!
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup fresh strawberries, cored
1/2 cup dried tibetan goji berries
agave nectar, to taste
water, if needed, to thin to desired consistency
Simply blend ingredients in a blender until smooth, adding a bit of water, if needed, to get it to the consistency you like. This is also much better if you freeze the berries before blending, but you can also just add a few ice cubes. You can also add a few leaves of your favorite greens for extra nutrition, if you want. It doesn't affect the flavor, but it will make the color pretty scary. :)

No Weight Loss on the Raw Food Diet?
Read this if you're experiencing no weight loss.
1. You're eating too many fatty or sugary foods, like avocados and coconuts, or bananas and raisins.
2. You're not eating ENOUGH!
The first culprit is easy enough to fix. Eat less of the fatty foods, or the foods that are highly processed. You've probably seen those fancy recipes for nut loaf and nut burgers and such in the raw cookbooks, and they can be SUPER. But when you're trying to lose weight on the raw food diet, you have to keep those types of foods to a minimum.
The reason the raw diet works so well is because raw foods are mostly low in calories. You are able to keep your body energized with plenty of healthy vitamins and minerals, while staying low in calories. But once you start adding too many nuts, avocados, coconuts, bananas, and other high-calorie foods, you lose that benefit.
If you believe this is your problem, simply keep a food diary for a few days and write down everything you eat. Then add up the calories. Your own daily calorie needs will differ based on your current weight and metabolism, but it will probably be somewhere between 1000 and 1600 calories per day to lose. 1200 is a good number to start with.
The second issue that could be causing you problems is eating too few calories. You might suspect this is the case if you aren't eating a lot, or if you know your diet consists of mostly very low calorie foods such as cucumbers, greens, lettuce, sprouts, melons, etc. If you believe this is the case, a food diary will also help you understand how many calories you are eating.
You see, when you start eating too few calories, you can put your body into starvation mode. The human body, when faced with possible famine, slows its basic functions down as much as possible to be able to make the most use out of whatever calories it gets. This means calories are burned more slowly, resulting in no weight loss. Basically, your body panics because it thinks your food supply is in danger, and it holds on to as much fat and as many calories as possible. Try increasing your calorie intake for a few days and see if that helps.
One last trick is to build up muscle. Many raw foodists (myself included) are very petite and lean. We often don't have a lot of muscle. Muscle burns calories MUCH faster than lean body tissue, so i

- Here's one of my favorite healthy raw recipes. Feel free to add it to your lens. :)
*Salty No-Salt Salsa*
-24 ounces cherry or grape tomatoes
-16 ounces of celery (5-6 stalks)
-8 ounces red bell pepper (1 pepper)
-4 ounces sweet apple (Gala or Fuji, 1/2 apple)
-1 handful cilantro
1. Cut ½ of the celery, red bell pepper, and all of the apple into medium-sized pieces. You want each piece about the same size as the tomatoes.
2. Pulse ½ of the tomatoes and cilantro with the celery, pepper, and apple chunks. You want a slightly chunky mixture, not a puree.
3. Dice the rest of the tomatoes, celery, bell pepper, & cilantro.
4. Stir blended portion with the diced portion
5. Devour with cucumber slices and/or celery sticks
It's delicious and savory, without any added salt!
