Beginners' Dive Sites in the Red Sea

.

The Egyptian Red Sea is one of the most beautiful scuba diving locations in the world, and it's accessibility and reasonable cost makes it an extremely popular tourist destination. The corals are vibrant and the multitude of fish is almost unparalleled, so it's no mystery why people flock there throughout the year to enjoy it. While snorkelling in itself is extremely rewarding - and some of the best photos I have taken have been while snorkelling, learning to dive makes the experience even more incredible as you have the opportunity to see some of the most spectacular fish and colossal coral reefs eye to eye.

This page focusses on some of the best dive sites in the Sharm El Sheikh area of the Red Sea in Egypt suitable for beginners who have just passed their Open Water Diver Course (or equivalent), from my own personal experience and the recommendation of divemasters I have spoken to. In all these dives, you have the opportunity to see the most amazing underwater life from 18m depth or less.

Middle Garden

The first in my list is where I learned to dive, and one of the sites where a great dive is guaranteed - the corals are spectacular and the variety of fish is incredible. It is located just east of Na'ama Bay, so the corals are much healthier than in the bay where there is heavy pollution. I found there is an exceptional number of Sohal Tangs, as seen above, in this area for some reason, and they are certainly not shy! As a sidenote, if you are planning on doing a lot of snorkelling at the beach as well, I would highly recommend booking a hotel in Middle Garden, as the coral is much better than in Na'ama Bay, but it's still only 5 minutes in a taxi.

The coral reef is very shallow here, never extending much deeper than 15m, so is perfect for newly qualified divers, and more experienced ones looking for a nice easy dive.

While it's not an everyday occurrence, there's always a chance you'll see something 'big', as shown in this video where 4 huge Whale Sharks are feeding on a bait ball in Middle Garden.

Tiran Island

Perhaps it was just luck, but twice on the boat to Tiran we have seen a pod of dolphins, which is why I'm including it in this list. The first time, there were probably 30 dolphins surrounding the boat, and was an amazing sight to witness. It takes around 1 hour to reach from Na'ama Bay by boat and there are plenty of different excursions to choose from, so you can make a day of it, and hopefully see something special like I did. As well as the dolphins, I have seen several huge Titan Triggerfish and some beautiful Picasso Triggerfish. I would recommend it as a great day out with a chance to see something out of the ordinary as long as you keep your eyes peeled.

Red Sea Fish Books

Before going to Egypt, I would recommend reading up about the fish you may encounter, so you know what to expect, and what to look extra hard for!

Ras Mohammed

Ram Mohammed

Ras Mohammed is a National Park at the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and as the area is protected against fishing or any other damaging human activity, the coral reefs are in beautiful condition, and some of the most incredible marine life can be seen here. Even if you don't dive, the snorkelling here is amazing, and it is one of the only places where the shore can be safely reached without swimming over corals, so as you can see in the image above, we had the opportunity to walk along the beach and re-enter the water along the coast so we didn't have to swim back against the current. As there are very few natural sandy beaches on the Sinai Peninsula, this was particularly special and a lovely end to the day snorkelling.

Ras Umm Sid

This is the dive site at which I had one of my first qualified dives, and my maximum depth was just 12m on that dive, but I still remember it as an excellent dive because of the sheer vibrancy of the coral and fish. You are likely to see lionfish and stingrays at this dive site just south of Na'ama Bay, and is accessible by land, with many resorts situated along the coast of this area.

Fiddle Garden

Fiddle Garden is located between Far and Middle Garden (hence the name), and while all the Gardens (Far, Middle and Near) are excellent dive sites, this was my favourite, and can be accessed by both boat and from the land. While sharks are not so common in this area where there are lots of hotels nearby, you are guaranteed to see lots of Parrotfish, like the one below, as well as all the usual pretty reef fish. There are also an unusual amount of unspoilt soft corals across the Gardens, and for that reason, the whole area is one of my favourite areas for a nice easy dive.

As mentioned earlier, I would also recommend booking a hotel in this area instead of right in Na'ama Bay, as the coral reefs are some of the best in the area, all the while not being too far from civilisation.

Tower

Tower is one of the most memorable dive sites I have visited, simply because of the vertical descent down the elevator shaft of coral wall at the beginning of the dive. It was a little daunting the first time, but made the dive a little unusual and that bit more special. Of course, like all the other dive sites I have mentioned, it hosts a spectacular range of soft and hard corals, with millions of shimmering fish both large and small to satisfy every diver, from the newly qualified to the hardened Divemasters. Here, there is also a chance of seeing Manta Rays if you are lucky, as seen in the video below.

Egypt Books

Egypt is a fascinating place, and the culture is very different to what most of us have experienced, so it is well worth reading up about Egypt in general before going. Useful would be to learn about places to visit, travel arrangements, etiquette, and learning a few words in Arabic will give the impression you have made an effort. It's an amazing place and to embrace it fully, it helps to understand it better, and what better way to spend the plane journey than reading about it?

Thanks for reading!

Thank you very much for reading my page about Dive Sites in the Sharm El Sheikh area of Egypt. I hope you found it useful and interesting, and would very much appreciate any suggestions of additions to my list, as it is of course not exhaustive, and there are many other wonderful places to visit.

Lovely lens, it made me want to go diving again. I learned to dive in New Zealand in the 80's, but haven't dived since 1999 unfortunately, just haven't had the opportunity. It's so amazing to be under the water and to not have to worry about not being able to stay down, as you do when snorkeling. Enjoyed my visit, so I am leaving behind a blessing for you.
