Best Wooden Rocking Horse Toys

We don't know who made the first "riding" toy horse, but it is believed that children in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome enjoyed riding on horses mounted on wheels. After these empires faded away we can be sure that fences or the trunks of fallen trees could make a great substitute for a mighty steed.

We do know that knights and warriors practiced jousting and swordsmanship on wheeled wooden horses during the Middle Ages. Even smaller versions were made so that young boys of the nobility could start learning these necessary skills.

At some point people started making toy barrel horses for children. These were stationary toys that were made of a circular log supported by four legs with a fake head on one end of the log. This was an improvement on a stick horse. But it was not until the 17th century that the true rocking horse on a rocking base began.

Then, in the 18th century they started to become increasingly beautiful creations at the hands of true craftsmen.

In Britain the Industrial Revolution brought about an aspiring upper middle class of people who sought after the beautifully handcrafted rocking horses-- and commercial rocking horse making began.

During this era the style of choice was the dappled grey rocking horse, which was a favorite of Queen Victoria. Her love of rocking horses was instrumental in increasing the popularity of the toys. London's rocking horse makers led the world at that time thus spreading its popularity.

It was in the Victorian age that the idea of making the horses hollow was conceived. This made the horses lighter and more stable, and gave birth to the idea of a secret compartment being fitted into the horse's underbelly. Now the family heirloom horse could store rare photographs, mint coins, locks of baby hair and other such trinkets for future generations to find.

The 20th century saw a decline in rocking horse makers, partly due to the outbreak of the World Wars and the Great Depression. By the 1960s it looked as if the art of the wooden rocking horse had died out completely in favor or more cheaply, mass produced objects.

But, surprisingly, at this time the art of hand-crafted toys and art objects began to be appreciated again and artisans began looking again at the wooden rocking horse as a viable alternative in a throw-away society. While somewhat costly, wooden rocking horses of good design and excellent quality are again available to become favorite toys and the heirlooms to future generations.
