How a reverse osmosis unit filters water
RO-DI units consist of several stages, with a different form of filtration at each stage. For example when water flows through my unit, it first passes through 3 charcoal filters, followed by the membrane itself. The membrane (main filter) has pores so small that not even viruses can pass through (and viruses are pretty much the smallest organisms).
Once water has cleared the membrane, it passes through a DI or de-ionization chamber, where some more filtration takes place, and finally it goes through the final filter for finishing touches. The end result? Pure, pristine water.

- Great lens. But I still would suggest boiling drinking water for at least 15 minutes (enough to kill the germs) and place it in the refrigerator afterwards.
