The Carpathian Male: The Ultimate Romantic Hero

The Classic Romantic Hero

The usual description of a leading man in a romance novel usually falls into one of two categories. They are either tall, dark, and handsome, or a blond haired, blue-eyed Adonis. There are variations to the theme. The hair color will change or he will have green eyes or even gray, but they all have broad, muscular shoulders and narrow hips. In truth, it doesn't really matter. Where the author's description stops, the reader's imagination kicks in.

Fortunately it's not the physical description of the hero that catches a reader's attention and draws them in. There is so much more to a true hero than broad shoulders and the thickness of their hair. It's the strength of character and the adversities he must overcome. That is why I believe that the Carpathian males in Christine Feehan's Dark Series are the best romantic heroes in print today.

The Carpathian Male

The Carpathians are a powerful, ancient race. They are often considered immortal, but can be killed. The Carpathian male usually loses his emotions and the ability to see color after a couple hundred years (about the time they are considered adults.) They are destined to wander the earth in search of their one true lifemate, the only woman that restore their emotions and bring color back into their world. When he finally finds her, she rejects his claim. She wants nothing to do with a man whose attitudes and beliefs are better suited for the dark ages than today.

Can you imagine a world without color? Without emotion? The only thing a male Carpathian has to hang onto is honor and a sense of duty. The temptation to give in, to feel the rush of emotion is overwhelming. If they give into the temptation they give up their souls and turn vampire.

Dark Prince is the first book in Christine Feehan's Dark Series. It was released in 1999 and has remained popular in the ten years since. I loved this book and all the books released since then. The 20th book in the Dark Series will be relased in September, 2009

My foray into Science Fiction/Fantasy Romance

I am an avid reader, always have been. I like to read thrillers, suspense, mysteries, historical romances, contemporary romances, comedy and occasionally non-fiction. I never considered science fiction or fantasy. I let my imagination run wild while reading, but I have my feet firmly planted on the ground. Science fiction was too far out there. My husband picked up Dark Prince, the first book in the Carpathian Series, at a book exchange sponsored by his employer.

He thought I would like it.

I read the blurb and turned up my nose. Dark Prince was a science fiction novel and a romance to boot. I set it on the bookshelf and ignored it. One rainy Saturday afternoon I was left with nothing to read. I had finished the books I picked up at the library and didn't feel like going out in the rain to exchange them. I picked up Dark Prince. It was either read that or put on my raincoat.

Three pages in and I was hooked. That was three years ago. Since then I have read all of Christine Feehan's Dark Series.

When the male Carpathian finds his true lifemate, he binds their souls together with ritual words imprinted on his soul before he was born.

Until he finds her, he is destined to wander the world alone.

I claim you as my lifemate.

I belong to you. I offer my life for you. I give you my protection, my allegiance, my heart, my soul, and my body. I take into my keeping the same that is yours.

Your life, happiness and welfare will be cherished and placed above my own for all time. You are my lifemate, bound to me for eternity and always in my care.
