Best sci fi movies

Choosing the best sci fi movies is a subjective thing , Never the less, this lens presents my choice of the best science fiction and Science fantasy movies and TV Series. In this particular lens, I will present mini reviews of some of my favourite and you will find links to full reviews placed dedicated lenses.

Some of the best sci fi movies that are reviewed in this series of lens are the Star wars films from George Lucas, the Alien movies, Lord of the rings, Battle star galactica, Star trek movies and TV series.

The quality of the TV series available in this genre is so spectacular that it would be a dis service to any new commer to the Genre if i did not include them.

As all people who love movies know, the age of a great movie hardly matters, the effects might not be up to the current standards, but a Great movie is more than just its effects, it ought to contain a great story. Watch these movies if you can. Better still, buy the dvd and keep it.

Battlestar Galactica

The re imagined series

This is the best visual space opera available today and it deserves to be at the top any list of the best sci fi movies. This series involves a complete re write or re imagination of the old series.

The story line is that A collection of 12 Human occupied worlds creates robotic servants, the Cylons, who are self aware ai and eventually rebel against the 12 worlds. A long war commences and is ended with a truce.

However, the Cylons, develop a plan to wipe out the Humans of the 12 worlds and Launch a successful surprise attackm destrying tha Majority of Human military forces and Civilian Populations. Battlestar Galactica, a human Space Capital war vessel, survives and shepards an collecion of surviving humans in space ships in a race accross the Cosmos, away from the vastly superior Cylon aggressor.

I came to the re imagined series expecting The old series with new technology, what i got is the best series I have seen on TV in any genre for a long time. Infact, I struggle to remember anything better constructed.

Stargate SG1

The first spinoff from the film Stargate

This did not start out too well, but it rapidly blossomed into one of the best science fiction series around. There are 10 seasons in this neat series and Each season demands a separate review. However, I shall summaris the series for this lens.

Stargate SG1 is preceded by Stargate the movie, a classic film which should be seen by any science fiction fan. The premise is that the US military discover a device which creates a worm hole through which people can travel to planets in other Star systems. A small team is sent through the worm hole and soon get into a fight with an alien entity who holds humans as slaves. They defeat the alien after suffering severe losses.

Stargate SG1 takes up where the film ends . As the US military sends out teams to explore the Galaxy via the stargate, they discover that there are a lot of civilisations out there , plus factions, with the Dominant powers being the Extremely Malign Goa uld, Aliens of the same race as the Alien defeated in the movie. Stargate SG1 focusses on the adventures of one off the teams being sent through the Stargate, SG1.

Stargate Atlantis

The second spinoff series from Stargate the film

This breaks away from the original series but remains linked . This series , for me represented an improvement over the original series, which is saying a lot considering how good the original series was.

Stargate Atlantis: We are introduced to the City of Atlantis, built by an ancient race in the Pegasus Galaxy, in season 8 of Stargate SG1. An international team of scientists and soldiers lead by Elizabeth Weir are sent to investigate the City. They discover a galaxy dominated by a hostile Species which defeated the Most powerful entities that the Stargate teams had ever encountered previously.

The five seasons of Stargate Atlantis focus on the endeavours of the Atlantis expedition to defeat a remarkable opponent. Ultimately, as in all popular fiction, the Human side wins and It would appear that the Studio's feel that the Series has had its day.

However, Each of the 5 seasons is superbly penned and fantastic viewing for the casual and enthusiastic sci fi watcher alike.

Alien

A review of the first 4 films

ALIEN :
There have been 4 films in this series to date plus 2 Alien vs Predator films.
I watched the First Alien film at 3 am during a Family Sleep over and none of us had ever heard of the film and knew not what to expect. Wow, what a film, this remains, in my opinion, the apex film about first contact with a hostile alien species.

By Aliens, I refer to only the first 4 films , which starred Sigourney Weaver and excluded the predators. These 4 films where classics in their own right. Each time I've watched them, its been a delight. The AvP films deliver a different experience.

Alien: The species of alien in all 4 films is essentially the same. They are first encountered when space cargo carry ship responds to a distress call. An extremely inimical alien attacks the crew and eventually there is a sole survivor, Ripley(Sigourney Weaver).

Ripley is subsequently involved in three further encounters with the alien species. These three ecounters form the three sequels to Alien.

A large part of the excellence of the "Alien " films lies in how they combine some of the finest Directors such as Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Excellent scripts and Special effects that are still special today, plus an absolutely splendid cast led by Sigourney Weaver.

Lord of the Rings

Tolkein was a master of his craft. A Professor at Oxford, Combat Military Officer in world war one, his works do have special flavour. There are aspects of the tale which are worrying, but I hope are more a product of prevailing attitudes rather than deep seated attitude. Lord of the Rings is what would be referred to as Science Fantasy, or Fantasy writing.

Lord of the rings is the Tale of one of the many wars for Middle Earth, a fictional setting probably soewhere in our world. A Major Component of this war , for which the books are named , is the so called "ring of power" . Thr Protagonist are split into roughly three camps, those determined to destroy the Ring, Those determined to gain the rings power, and Those doing their own thing and being pulled into the whole affray.

The movie intepretation is an awesome spectacle, I have watched it several times, and each time it has been Gripping viewing. Peter jackson has produced a master piece without equal for spectacle. By staying remarkably close to the original script, everything really has the Stamp of Tolkein on it, the dialogue, the look, the cast.

Star wars :
The six episodes that make up the star wars films standout as a feast of visual spendour, fast story telling and extreme excitment for new or casual Science fiction fans. These are in this list of Best Sci fi movies by right. I re watch these movies often, and i am entertained everytime.

The very first Star wars film is probably what really ignited my ongoing love affair with science fiction. Prior to this film, the best Sci fi I had seen where the Doctor Who TV episodes, Thunderbirds, UFO , Captain Scarlet and Star trek. I had been fascinated by all these programs on TV, but some how, they did not quite hit the mark. Then Came Star Wars.

Epic in scale and Imagination, this truely was the first Major Science fiction for many people. Plus, it appears to have been the first Major Box office success for the genre. Star wars did make it acceptable for Big studio's to Gamble on making such films with some expectation of Success.
