Some of the Best Sci-Fi Tv shows from the last years

When doing a some kind of list of the best Sci-Fi Tv shows in the last couple years, there can be many different opinions in which ones are the best. This is more a personal view of course, and what I might consider good or appealing, it may be totally different for other person.
Still, I am a big fan of Sci-Fi. Since I was a kid, I dreamed about going to space, meeting new alien races, flying ships, etc. Many great series have been produced and still, there are many people that confuse Sci-Fi with a more fantasy series, or even about paranormal series.

For me, a Sci-Fi show, must have at least 2 or 3 characteristics: 1- Must be in space, otherwise it is not Sci-Fi (many can disagree with this); 2- Must be in a near future or have a plot that can fit in our time line (there are a couple of series about our modern world that do this very well); Finally, must use some weird and amazing technology that many of us only consider in theory.

Star Trek - The Series that changed Sci-Fi

The vision of Gene Roddenberry

StarTrek

Even if most people never saw a show of Star Trek, everyone knows it. I find it funny when I mention the show to anyone, people always comment "wasn't that the one that have that guy with the funny ears?". It is amazing the great impact Star Trek had in everyone. When at the time, Gene had so many difficulties to put the show in the air, and even when it came out, it did not had that impact on audiences that everyone was expecting. Sadly the show was canceled but in a way, maybe that was for the best, since today Star Trek produced 11 movies and 5 Tv shows that would bring a legion of fans worldwide.
Also, the Star Trek franchise would bring many video games, but on this market, it did never had much success.

The Star Trek Shows

To boldly go where no man has gone before

Star Trek TNG

After the failure in audiences of the Original Series, Star Trek become famous after the first movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the movie would bring a new "rebirth" to the series and would be the motivation to start producing new series and movies.

One of the most successful series was Star Trek - The Next Generation the 7 season series that would bring new actors and new adventures in the world of Star Trek. Star Trek TNG, would make a legion of fans everywhere in the world, that follow the adventures of the USS Enterprise and it's crew.
With a great bet on actors like Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard), Jonathan Frakes (First Officer Will Riker), and Brent Spiner (Data) and a participation of many other guest into the series, Star Trek TNG would "feed" the fans for years to come.

Even if after the Original Series, a few movies came to the market, using the same actors, that help also to make a culture around Star Trek. The Next Generation is considered on of the best Sci Fi Tv shows from the saga.

Star Trek - The Original Series

The Series that would change our world forever

There is no doubt that the vision of Gene Roddenberry would bring many great Tv shows. The Orginal Series would be the start of an adventure that endures even today.

Star Trek: The Original Series - The Complete Series (Seasons 1-3 Bundle)

Amazon Price: $165.87 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $249.98

With so many problems and a failure in audiences at the time, many big companies probably end up feeling sorry for ending this show. Not even Gene Roddenberry would imagine that his vision will endure for over 40 years. Today, many might not consider this a good show, the special effects were dumb by today's standards, but the vision and the technology was much ahead of it's time. Gene Roddenberry was really a men ahead of his time. Probably this was his biggest problem. As fan, I only say: Thank you Gene for the wonderful world that you gave us.

The Next Generation

The series that made a huge fan base worldwide

After some great movies and the Orginal Series, another 3 series would complete the saga, bringing many fans where even today great conventions are held to make a point that Star Trek will endure forever.

Star Trek 2009

The last movie to give a new freshness

StarTrek

The latest movie from Star Trek, released in November of 2009 would leave a question in the air. The plot was made in a way that the events of the past would be altered, leaving the door opened for a bunch of new series and plots to discover.
In my honest opinion, as a fan of Star Trek, this movie did not bring much impact on me. I do not mean the movie is bad, in fact, the movie is great, with great modern special effects, great action and even the comedy that is part of Star Trek is also well played.
Directed by J.J. Abrams and with the actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, the movie is great for the "common people". By common, I mean, people that never followed Star Trek in a religious fan way, but wants to see a great Sci Fi action movie.
Still, if you want to collect the history of Star Trek, this movie also deserves his place on any fan shelf.

Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda

Gene Roddenberry gave us more then Star Trek

Andromeda

Why does this should be considered one of the best Sci Fi Tv Shows?
This might not be know by many people but Gene Roddenberry gave his vision to another 2 series that were much different from the Star Trek saga.
Andromeda, was another great action Sci Fi series that also bring a different galaxy and plot to the screen. Andromeda tells the story of a Commonwealth of planets and different races and their High Guard Captains in advanced warships. After a great war, the Commonwealth falls and in a great battle, Captain Dylan Hunt warship Andromeda, is trapped in a wormhole for 300 years. A salvage crew of mercenaries find the Andromeda and try to get it out of the wormhole hopping to get a good deal. Not aware that the Captain was still alive and the warship advanced A.I. was still functioning, the crew of the Eureka Maru find itself changing sides and aid Captain Hunt to restore the Commonwealth.

The series have comic moments and many of those moments are around the young geek engineer Seamus Harper. Also it delivers great action and good special effects, in particular the ones where there is combat. The series were produced by Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett Roddenberry and developed by Robert Hewitt Wolfe.

Some of the actors are Kevin Sorbo playing Dylan Hunt, Lisa Ryder, Keith Hamilton Cobb, the beautiful Laura Bertram and the well know sexy Lexa Doig to name a few.

This video plays the High Guard Battle March and shows many action scenes of Andromeda. It shows many of the cool special effects from series. Enjoy.

Gene Roddenberry's Earth Final Conflict

Another good series from Gene great vision

Earth Final Conflict

Earth Final Conflict sets the plot in our days when a alien race called the Taelons arrives on Earth. In exchange for taking refuge on Earth, the Taelons give humanity many advanced technologies, eliminating many of the big problems in the world like hunger, disease, pollution and war. Despite of their good intentions, the Taelons do not want to conquer Earth. Still, a resistance movement is created by people that believe the Taelons are not what they seam to be.

In fact the Taelons are on the verge of extinction and they cannot reproduce. Their only hope is to bioengineer humans in hope to extend their lives but also to fight their enemies the Jaridians (who are of Taelon origin). With all this, they start to manipulate governments, agencies and the media. Many civil liberties are violated in this attempt. The resistance movement always believe the Taelons had a second agenda for humanity.

Stargate

A new saga begins

Stargate

After the great movie "Stargate" with Kurt Russell and James Spader, a new saga would begin for many years to come. The movie sets the plot when a ancient device was found in Giza. After many studies, scientists discover the circular device was made from a mineral that was not native from Earth. More studies were made until the Egyptologist Daniel Jackson, a low luck in life professor manages to decipher the symbols on the Stargate. The symbols match constellations and it is then discovered that it can allow people travel great distances in the galaxy. The US Army sends Jack O'Neill with a team of marines into the Stargate to discover a alien race called the Goa'uld. These aliens that pose by Gods where in fact the ancient Egyptian rulers.

The Stargate franchise gave many great years of action, and fun. Starting with the original movie, the saga grew a huge fan base thanks to the wining series Stargate SG1. The series last for 10 years, bringing many new characters to the plot and 2 great enemies. The series is know by the famous special effects and the comic funny moments between the always clueless Jack O'Neill when trying to understand the scientific mind of Samantha Carter. The main actors were Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O'Neill), Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson), the sexy Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter), Christopher Judge (Teal'c) and Don S. Davis (General George S. Hammond).

The saga would bring 2 more movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum with side plots. Also it was developed in a new series, Stargate Atlantis where the plot would be centered in the discovering of the ancient lost city of Atlantis. Also with great special effects, the comic moments but with a different set, since it was in other galaxy and with a new crew.

In 2009, Stargate Universe started to be produced. This time, the producers decided to give a totally different look to the saga. No funny comics, and the set was in a alien spaceship crossing the universe in a vast distance from Earth. The crew is trapped and must survive without resources. In my honest opinion, and been myself a big fan of the Stargate saga, this last one was much more serious. The comic situations that many of us got used in SG1 was good, but this time, Stargate Universe was much more dark and serious and it had a big psychological effect. The audiences were bad and the SyFy channel decided to cancel the series, in fact, SyFy in the last couple years have decided to end very good quality series leaving the viewers and the fans very upset.

Still, the Stargate saga brought us a great Sci Fi action shows. Wining of many awards, there is no doubt that Stargate is one of the best Sci Fi shows that were produced in the last years.

Babylon 5

A different view in a space Sci Fi show

Babylon 5

I love Babylon 5. Every time I watch Babylon 5, I cannot wonder if the universe would ever become like that.
This show is great, with a interesting view of what would be if humans colonize space and meet other alien races. From politics, intrigues, decadence, wars, B5 takes us to the struggle of human living in a far away station where the main goal was to set a neutral ground for all races in the galaxy to talk about common problems and goals. A Sci Fi alien United Nations so to speak.

With so many different races some more powerful then others, the series take us on in 5 seasons of action. Written by J. Michael Straczynski, the series brought many modern themes in to the show. From episodes that could tell a story of a medical dilemma, to the murder police investigation plot. The plot also had great episodes where it would focus on other characters, mainly the between 2 in particular: The ambassadors of two worlds, the Centauri Republic and the Naar Regime, where the second one had been conquered and enslave by the first.

Every races had their agendas, been the Vorlons one of the most mysterious ones. A ancient race that manipulate many characters to serve in the coming Shadow Wars. The Shadows and the Vorlons were respected and feared since they were the most older space races.
Even, if someone is not a big fan of Sci Fi, Babylon 5 will for sure entertain for many hours. The different aspects of the social live and politics, show very well our same problems today.

The series was had also a few movies done even if they did not had much success, but it complements the series by giving a side story for the major events that happened on the five seasons.

Battlestar Galactica - 2003 / 2004

A new production from the great 70's Galactica

Battlestar Galactica

When I was around 8 or 9 years old, I remember playing Galactica with my friends. Each one of us had their favorite heroes and we wanted to be like them flying the fighters and go into the battle with the Cylons.

What makes this show so great, was the ability of using the modern technology to make a great visual impact. Using great actors and with a very consistent plot, the new Galactica brought great action to the screen. With the participation of a great actor, Edward James Olmos, that also directed a few episodes, Galactica brings the military Sci Fi action into play. The constant threat of a Cylon attack, the endless fights and the struggle for resources, the last remain of the human population try to get to a ancient planet called Earth. They believe to be from where the ancient 12 tribes left.

In my honest opinion the series are very well directed. The way, the camera follows the action and switch from actor to actor, was well played and this cause much more depth on the viewer when doing all the space combat action. The plot also is well written and covers many side stories about other characters when in fact, everyone of them are connected.

Even on the Cylon side plot, there are interesting aspects that the directors decided to put into context with the main plot in a way that many of us will get hooked to know whats going to happening next. Apart from the "normal" Sci Fi shows, where there are always aliens and dark powers into play, Galactica, knew how to stay focused in the people and in the military doctrine that the show is so well know.

The theme of Galactica also brought another great series called Caprica, a plot that tells the story of the birth of the Cylons, decades before the events of Galactica. Sadly the series were canceled by SyFy claiming low audiences. Again SyFy leave their viewers hanging on the rope with unfinished series and stories.

Firefly

and the great movie Serenity

Firefly

Firefly was one of those series that was very underrated. The series only last for 1 season but it was fun to watch with their unique comic moments. The movie Serenity, had a good success, still that was not enough to make the series to go on.
Firefly tells the story of a group of rebels that live their lives scheming, robbing and living on contraband in their ship "Serenity". The series can been seen as a space western, and many of the action was well implemented with the western theme on the background. Firefly and the movie Serenity was strong enough to create a fan base but sadly that was not enough to keep it going.

Still, Firefly is probably on of the best Sci Fi shows that have been around, but again, the Tv companies do not care anymore about quality, only audiences and money. If you want a great Tv show to watch, Firefly will deliver with their comic moments and a great deal of action. Check out the trailers of Firefly and Serenity.

Falling Skies

Aliens invade Earth

Falling Skies

Created by Robert Rodat and produced by Steven Spielberg, Falling Skies is a new series where the first season started in the Summer of 2011 where the second season is around to show up in the Summer of 2012.
With Steven Spielberg finger on it, the series has a good amount of special effects even if they are made on a basic level.
The plot sets the events 6 months after a alien invasion where the combined military powers of the world are quickly destroyed and around 90% of the population is dead. The stories follow the events of a small group of refugees trying to survive the alien menace and also to try to understand why the aliens came to destroy humanity. The aliens start to abduct children between 8 and 16 years old to be used as slaves. They attach a metallic device onto their spines and use it to mind control the children. The removal of this device, instantly kills the children.

The series focus a lot on the daily lives of this group and their desperate struggle to understand the aliens and to survive them. With end of the first season, questions was answered but many more came around. We need to wait for the Summer of 2012 to know more.

Fringe

Alternate reality, parallel worlds and weird science

Fringe

I know I said that for me, a Sci Fi show must be around Space. I know also, that Fringe is not about space. Still, this series has so much of Sci Fi like many others. Fringe is a great series and probably on of the best Sci Fi shows that I have seen in the last couple years. A more "down to Earth" series with a central point of police investigation.

The plot sets around a division of the FBI called the "Fringe Division". The team uses a unorthodox science to explain and investigate weird events that have no apparent reason of been explained and fully comprehended. Things like Teleportation, mind control, astral projection, invisibility, precognition, spontaneous combustion and much more are the daily basis of the Fringe Division.

If you enjoy a good police investigation series but still want to stay in the Sci Fi area of intrigue and fantasy, Fringe will deliver. The many questions and answers that are reveled in the series give us always one reason to see just one more episode. This is a series that will hook you to the screen.
Currently season 4 is still in the air, so if you never saw it, you have 3 seasons to catch up.

Coming from the incredible vision and imagination of George Lucas, Star Wars - The Clone Wars have been a great hit with a massive fan base all around the world from every age. If you thought animated series was just a kid's stuff, you will change your mind when you see The Clone Wars.

The plot is set on the Clone Wars, the time line of the Episode II. Go with the Jedi´s Obi Wan and Anakin in their struggle against the Separatists Army. Full of action and the chance of knowing many alien races in detail, that always had little exposure in the movies, the series is full of action with all the great heroes from the saga.

The series was made on CGI, and have been a huge success everywhere in the world. Each episode last for around 22 minutes, but those 22 minutes are always packed with great action and a great production in terms of story line and amazing graphics details. I love Star Trek, especially TOS, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (reboot) and all the Stargates. Not so keen on the recent Dr Whos - I loved the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker eras though. You've also reminded me of a few other good shows too, thanks :-)

I love Star Wars and Star Trek (especially TNG and the most recent Star Trek movie), but Babylon V is my all-time favorite. I own the complete series (every episode in all 5 seasons) and come back and re-watch the entire thing with my husband every few years. It's always just as good as the first time. Thanks for putting together this terrific lens! :)

Oh and about V - I lOVED the 1980s Miniseries and TV series of V - man I am really showing my age - But I hated the newer version of V - it was so dull and boring - all talk and NO action.

I preferred the 1980s Battlestar Galactica - I never liked the newer version of BG.
I also loved Babylon 5 and Stargate SG1 and Startrek TNG.
Two shows you have not mentioned are - Sanctuary - starring Amanda Tapping - and Farscape - starring Ben Browder and Claudia Black (all 3 of whom were also in Stargate SG1). Interesting lens.

I know about Sanctuary, still I do not consider it truly a sci fi show... I guess that can be discussed...I think about Sanctuary more like a fantasy show... as for Farscape, I never saw it, but I will look into it.
Thank you for your visit, hope you like it.

I agree with most of your list (I think I'm the only person in the world who found Battlestar Galactica to be overrated). I haven't seen Earth: Final Conflict or Andromeda, but I have them and they are on my viewing list for this winter. Thank you for the information about 'Falling Skies.' I had never heard of it and will be checking it out!
  • kar351 Nov 29, 2011 @ 1:38 pm | delete
I understand the feeling for Galactica. The show was more focused to the male audience, been a miliaty Sci Fi show. Caprica, on the other hand, was more stable, and the producers tried to get a more female audience. Sadly it was canceled, it was a great series.
Thank you for your visit, and the blessing, that was very appreciated.
    Best of luck.
