Best Self Help Books for Teens and Young Adults

Ranked #67 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #2,761 overall

A good Book is a Great Friend

Top quality Self help and Personal Development books need not be the best selling ones. They just need to fulfil the role of a mentor / a counsellor, a friend or a philosopher, during the difficult times - whether you are growing up as a teenager or a grown-up needing direction. We all encounter times of great needs and wants and get so engrossed with helpless feelings at times, and need that extra bit of motivation and inspiration to help us move along.

Books many a time can be a man's best friend. They don't take over your space or question you back. They are at best the silent guides who help you tide across different times and impart to you, indelible learning's which can withstand the test of time. Here below, is a list of my book selections for people of all ages and experience. As the words 'Self-Help' implies, the knowledge is 'within' you - these books just help you uncover the hidden parts and the paths in front of you. Wish you the very best!

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Personal Workbook

Reader Review: The reason why I read this book was because it was assigned by my teacher. When I started reading this book I thought that this book would be boring and dull. Now that I have finished reading this book I really enjoyed it. It helped me with alot of problems that I was facing. Now that I have finished this book I will try my best to put the seven habits I learned in the book into action. Because of this book I have learned to control my temper. I have changed all my bad habits, and I am going to do better in school.I would reccomend this book to teens who have problems with friends, family, and school. It will change everything for them.

User Review:

This is one of the best self help books I've read for any age (and I've read a lot). Author Dave Pelzer writes in a way that is so encouraging and real. He shares parts of his own story of abuse (which he writes about fully in his book titled "A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive"), how he overcame challenges to rise, and he gives great guidance--the common sense that's not always so common. This book is honest, from the heart with brains.

"Help Yourself for Teens" is set up in three parts: Dealing with Life (five chapters), Choices You Make Now and Where they Can Lead You in Your Future (three chapters), and Personal Resolve (two chapters). It's like a letter from a personal coach, one who's really on your side and let's you know that you matter. This book tells you "You can do it!" and gives you tools. It is a timeless gem. I recommend it whole heartedly to any one who wants encouragement and inspiration.

A Guide for Teens (Dream It! Do It!)

Critics Review:

"The next time you hear a teen complain, 'There's nothing to do!' give him or her a copy of this book." - Psychology Today

"An excellent book for any teen seeking to set or meet a goal." - Youthworker

"An approachable volume to assist teens in defining their real interests, formulating and systematically pursuing workable goals, and celebrating their achievements." - Booklist

Reader Review:
Although written for teens, the information is useful for adults also. The author gives specific details about goal setting do's and don'ts, worksheets that can be copied and reused, and presents the material in a light, fun-reading way with many illustrations.

Review:

Although written specifically for depressed teenagers, this book's exercises are just plain good exercises for ANY teen to go through at some point. I say this because a lot of these activities can be used to build and develop good qualities in a person. For instance, there are activities that help build self-esteem and self-confidence. And let's face it, if kids had more of these kinds of qualities there would be a lot less troubled youths around.

Napoleon Hill's Golden Rules: The Lost Writings

Amazon's Review:

Napoleon Hill's Golden Rules: The Lost Writings consists of a series of magazine articles Napoleon Hill wrote between 1919 and 1923 for Success Magazine, of which he eventually became an editor. Hill's drive to become successful led him from the poverty stricken Appalachian Mountains to study rags-to-riches tycoons. These articles focus on Hill's philosophy of success. Drawing upon the thoughts and experiences of a multitude of influential people, Hill shows readers how those successful people achieved their status. Many of his writings, such as the chapter on the Law of Attraction, have been the basis of several bestselling books. Readers will discover principles designed to guide them to success if studied and put into action.

My Review:
No selection of Self Help books will ever be complete without a mention of this great master and the Guru of Success Teachings. The writings and the teachings of Mr. Napoleon Hill are as relevant today as it was a phenomenon during his time. His works are the foundation, if not the pillars of many modern day writers and authors. A highly recommended read.

Critical Reviews:

"Filled with powerful insights, You Don't Have to Learn Everything the Hard Way guides and motivates in smart and sensitive ways that any reader can benefit from." - John Gray PhD

"This book is filled with gems and 'A-Ha's!' And it's fun to read! 'Aunt Laya' combines a loving manner, in a non-judging way, with practical advice that will make anyone's life so much easier, and much, much more effective and happy." - Anon

Excellent suggestions you have here Charles. I see at least two I'd like my teen daughter to read, although I'm happy about the way she's going through her teen age (so far). Parents and teens often search for such books only when an issue already appears but it shouldn't be like that.
