SEO News: What's the Latest Search Engine Optimization Tactic?

For years, search engines have dealt with spam websites that employ unethical search engine optimization techniques (SEO) such as placing keywords behind pictures or text set to match backgrounds as not to be seen by the casual reader and perhaps most familiar to search engine users, keyword stuffing.

To combat this growing problem, search engines such as Google have developed a complicated algorithm, Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).

Before LSI, search engines categorized websites by their keywords. Unfortunately, unethical webmasters' practices became so common that search engines were becoming bogged down in keyword stuffed sites. Users were no longer able to find websites that held the information they had originally been searching for.

Enter LSI, rather than simply accepting keywords, algorithms like LSI search for how your keywords fit into the overall topic. For instance if you run a website on dog training classes, you'll be categorized under words like "dog" or "puppies". So when a user searches for something similar such as "dog care", your website may appear.

LSI also considers your website's overall theme and can detect a difference between a webpage that merely references obedience classes for your pet and one that is focused extensively on obedience classes.

Latent Semantic Indexing also considers how your keywords fit. Using the word "pup" may have brought you visitors looking for seals, puppies or even pup tents before search engines began using algorithms like LSI.

The new system carefully filters your text to understand just what you mean by your use of the word "pup" and how that applies to your website's overall theme - a form of search engine optimization that helps you rank better!

"I am a neophyte in web design and have a tech person in another city who has just started doing web design. She designed our websites but was not up on optimazation, and I wasn't either. We both ordered the book and have now designed two websites using it.

The first searches fairly well but it wasn't being found at all until we used the suggestions/instructions from the book so it certainly helped.

The second site was designed using the suggestions for titles, descriptions and keywords. I also believe the designer used all of the other directions for other parts of the site. We are just trying to get the site recognized at this point.

I would have to say, at least for myself, we would have not known any of the "secrets" to getting recognized without using the book. I am confident over time we wil get both sites readily recognized by the engines. It does seem to be somewhat of a science and the book help a lot.

I personally highly recommend the book and I don't normally give out 5's for anything, a big help. "

Optimizing Your Pages for Latent Semantic Indexing

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) also known as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). Easier than keyword indexing, LSI uses simple technology to detect which keywords naturally fit together for better search engine optimization.

Besides helping to combat spam sites that worm their way to the top of the results page, LSI technology opens up Internet marketers to use clear, better written content. Instead of relying on keyword density, Internet marketers are now free to use synonyms, related phrases and other words that are common to the industry.

But LSI algorithms don't mean you simply plug synonyms into your webpages while you wait for the visitors to come visit your site. No, you must aggressively use Latent Semantic Indexing to your advantage!

Diversify your content. If you frequently use phrases like "pet owner" consider other words your target audience might also be searching for such as "dog owner" or "cat owner".

Establish yourself an expert in your industry. Research has shown people use search engines because they want or need information, so tailor a few articles toward beginners in your niche. You can also have a few articles ghost-written for your site on topics of your choosing.

Use link anchors carefully. In the old days of SEO marketing, marketers choose one word carefully and used it for all of their link anchors. This would effectively give them top ranking in search engines. Now this practice has the opposite effect on your website. You can conquer this problem by using different words that apply to your industry.

For Good SEO, Think Like a PRO

Search Engine Optimization has a handy tool that's still fairly new and grossly underused. Press Release Optimization. Like SEO, press release optimization works for you to get your pages ranked in such search engines as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. Use press release optimization as an agent whose job it is to direct the world to your most important page.

To put press release optimization to work for you, write an attention grabbing headline-notice I said attention getting. Which means don't use a boring figure or lead with a boring fact. In your headline, use your topic keywords and write in a clear, easy to understand format.

In the body of your news release, stick to what's important and avoid the use of exclamation points!!! That marks your release as hype.

Not all press release sites are free to use-such as Newswire Today or PR.com, so you'll have to determine which route you want to take. You can submit online press releases to paid sites such as PR Newswire, PR Web and Business Wire.

Don't send out press releases at the beginning or ending of a work week. Those are the same choice days other companies use. Instead, schedule yours to release in the middle of the week and if you use the free sites, to avoid getting a spammer label in search engines, stagger the releases. One or two on Tuesday, another on Wednesday, etc.

Finally, in your press release, make me an offer I can't refuse. Tell me what you have that's free for me and I'll follow the link to your site. It's the best kind of SEO you can churn out!
