The Best SEO Blogs in the World
Blogs are an excellent way to stay up-to-date about the latest info, or to begin learning about SEO. Below are the blogs that every SEO should follow. As an SEO in Utah, I find it very useful to track all of the blogs below. Oh, and don't worry about the links - I've added a list of links for people to vote on at the end. It should be interesting to compare my results with the results of the visitors.
For those who don't know anything about, please read my lens explaining what SEO is. If you're just looking for services, make sure to check out this Utah SEO company - they also do SEO nationwide.
Top Ten SEO Blogs
SEOMoz is a great place for beginners and experts alike to start. If you don't know who Rand Fishkin, the SEOMoz founder and CEO, you probably don't know a lot about SEO or the industry. Other blogging experts include Cyrus Shepard, Tom Critchlow, and more. Here, you will find concrete SEO advice, best practices, and industry trends.
Moz also hosts a regular conference and makes top-notch SEO tools, including the Moz Bar and Open Site Explorer (OSE). If you're going to spring for one paid SEO tool, make it the pro membership with SEOMoz. Moz also features a strong community, with members like Keenan Steel and others.
I have one suggestion for SEOMoz: people often look for Rand Fishkin's past posts, including search terms like "Rand Fishkin interview questions." These kinds of queries even show up sometimes on the Google Adwords tool! They would have no luck, however, because Rand's full name is nowhere to be found on most of his blog posts. Perhaps, with a famous author like Rand, his name should be included somewhere on the page? It's presumptuous of me to be giving THE Rand Fishkin any advice, I know.
#2 - Search Engine Land
Danny Sullivan is another name that you should know and follow. Search engine land is usually the first site to get the scoop on Google news and updates. The quick response time to stories makes this blog worth checking multiple times every day for industry experts. In addition to the latest in SEO, you'll also find in-depth strategies and analysis. I've often wondered how Danny finds so much time every day to write and post as much as he does.
#3 - Search Engine Journal
Loren Baker and Ann Smarty are well-known bloggers, but you'll also find a constant stream of posts from guest bloggers. The quality of the guest blog posts vary, but almost always very well-written and thoroughly researched. After all, if you're going to post on a blog with thousands of readers, you want to make sure you're giving your best. Ann might shut your sub-par content down, but she'll do it more kindly than anyone I know.
#4 - Search Engine Round Table
I'm looking at the SEO Rountable home page, and I see that Barry Schwartz has posted at least six blogs today. This is, by no means, a first. The man has written over 11,000 posts, most of them about search engine marketing. Did I mention he's also the news editor for Search Engine Land? I have the feeling that Barry has a lot to do with publishing timely content on both sites. SE Round Table is another blog worth checking several times a day for full-time SEOs.
#5 - SEO Book
I'm going to take some criticism for ranking SEO Book #5. Believe me, Aaron, it's not for your lack of expertise or coverage. The problem is that they're just too busy making awesome tools like Rank Checker to post daily. With one or two blog posts a week, it's a good one to frequent, but the community element on the SEO Book blog is somewhat less lively than those of the higher ranked blogs. Check it for new posts daily, and close it if you don't find any.
#6 - Conversation Marketing
This is the "other blog." Ian Lurie, who looks exactly like his cartoon, speaks primarily about content, conversion, and site optimization. If you want great ideas for content creation and duration, start here. You'll need to dedicate a little more time to reading the blog posts, especially if you want to implement the suggestions. It's very doable, as it's updated once or twice per week. Ian has really moved up in my eyes recently; I'll keep this lens updated, and we may see Ian move up.
#7 - SEO by the Sea
If you hear someone talking about a Google search patent, chances are they've taken their info from Bill Slawski on SEO by the Sea. Make sure he gets an attribution! This is where SEO experts go to get their speculations about search engine ranking factors, which they then test and/or share. Unlike all of the other blogs on this list, this is not suitable content for a business owner, but only for a professional SEO with some industry knowledge. The information is very in-depth, and it requires a fair amount of understanding and reading comprehension to even get anything useful out of the posts.
#8 - Blogstorm
Every time I land on blogstorm, I read the heading tag and intro content, and think I've read that blog post already. No, that's just the intro. The Blogstorm blog needs to be updated more. Patrick Aloft seems to go through phases of serious interest in blogging, and seriously laziness. It's ok, Patrick, we've all been there - but you do risk falling out of the top 10! When the posts do appear, they're well-written and timely. I think he's holding out on us lately, but we'll hope to hear more.
#9 - Graywolf's Blog
Michael Gray posts about once per day, and he's not a high-level guy. This is why I strongly recommend reading his blog, especially if you have any hand in building and marketing your company's website. The information may not apply to you in every post, but you'll know by the title. Graywolf might catch more readers with generalized advice, but you need the detail guy sometimes for very specific problems. Be forewarned, though: we've seen him get rather unpleasant if you say something to him that he doesn't like.
# 10 - Search Engine Watch
SEW is a great place to get your Internet marketing updates. I would say that the PPC articles are the strongest on the site; social media posts and SEO posts have been improving as of late, though. If the trend continues, expect Search Engine Watch to move up on the list. Much of the content comes from guest blog posts, and I feel like the editorial guidelines or quality of applicants has improved.
Other Useful SEO Blogs
Marketing Pilgrim would be ranked higher if I were creating a list of the best online marketing blog, but I'm not. Many of the posts here relate indirectly to SEO, but very few are about SEO itself. Still, it's a great read to keep your mind open to other facets of online marketing, especially social media.
David Naylor's SEO Blog
Where are you David? You used to be in the top ten, but now you're... probably doing something that brings you a lot more money. Regardless, we'd like to see a lot more of him.

Don't Like The Rankings? Did I Miss One?
Tell Me About It!
SEO fun fact: I am stripping out HTML, but Squidoo comments are nofollowed anyway. In SEO-speak, that means there's no reason for low-level "SEO" spammers (wannabes) to post links in comments.
