Bloska planota, the crib of Slovenian skiing

There's a place in Slovenia which people ironically describe as: ...where there's winter for half of the year and freezing cold the other half.

Bloska planota (Bloke Plateau) is also one of the "forgotten corners of Slovenia", especially appreciated by cross-country skiers (in winter), mountain bikers, hikers and horse-back riders - who find the network of cart-track and dirt roads in pristine nature unstoppably attractive.

With an average altitude of over 700 m (2,300 feet) Bloska planota (Bloke Plateau) is not only famous for being cold, but also for having a lot of snow throughout the winter months.

No wonder people who lived there invented a way to get around - famous bloske smucke (Bloke skis). They are among the oldest skis, measure 160 cm (63 inches) in length, are 12 cm (4.7 inches) wide and 1.5 cm (0.6") thick.

What's different about them is the fact that Bloke skiers used a rod along with skis - for support, breaking and changing direction.

Bloke skis were traditionally used for traveling, transportation of heavy loads and playing - and skiing in Slovenia has a long tradition - since the area has been populated since pre-historic times.
