Start Managing Eczema Naturally with Store Bought or Homemade Eczema Soap

My husband has a severe case of eczema and has always said "Can't do anything for it. Nothing works, no matter what I've tried."

Of course, I took it upon myself to try and help him find some relief!

And what we've found is that even though he does always have some irritation, Eczema can be managed by being religious about using the right kind of soap, using moisturizer daily and avoiding the things that trigger it (even detergent).

I've also just discovered that our baby has eczema that she inherited from my husband's! I'm on a mission to solve the problem with natural home made soaps, baths and creams that are pleasant smelling, inexpensive to buy and eczema baby lotion that is not harmful for our baby, so that she can learn how to take care of her skin throughout her life too.

This page is dedicated to sharing the knowledge I've discovered about the best soaps, creams and baths with simple (and advanced recipes) as well as information about all the natural ingredients used. There is a LOT of information here, so I'm linking to all of it.

How are Homemade Soaps Better for Eczema?

It is unfortunate that most commercial soaps you buy at the store contain harsh ingredients and chemicals that can irritate your skin or worsen eczema. Chemicals strip our skin of its natural oils, making it prone to infection and irritation. In fact, most dermatologists discourage the use of commercial soaps for eczema patients.

Why is Oatmeal is the Best Ingredient in Eczema Soap?

"There are four reasons why your skin adores oatmeal," explains New York City dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD:

1. Dryness fighting: Oats contain polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and
leave a fine protective film on the skin, preventing dull, flake-y dryness.

2. Moisturizing: Oats are full of healthy, lubricating fats.

3. Defense building: The proteins in oatmeal help maintain the skin's natural barrier function,
which is what ensures that the world outside the skin stays out, and what's inside the skin stays in.

4. Pore cleansing: Oats are filled with natural cleansers (called saponins) that gently remove
dirt and oil from the pores.

Benefits of the Ingredient Honey

Honey naturally soothes the skin when applied as a topical cream. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help it to decrease pain and the appearance of scars.

You can either Buy or Make Homemade Soap for Eczema

Sometimes you may just want to buy something better than commercial soap for eczema, or you may want to get intimately involved with the natural soap-making process to make a unique eczema soap just for you (or the eczema sufferer in your life). Either way, this page will help get you the information you need to get started. Click the links below to get to the information you're looking for.

Easy Homemade Oatmeal Eczema Body Soap Recipe

It's easy to make homemade oatmeal bath.

Expensive oatmeal bath powder isn't necessary. Just grind oatmeal to a fine powder and add to the bath.

Buy Unflavored Oatmeal and Grind It!

I use a Mr. Coffee grinder that I got on sale at my local Target, but any coffee grinder will do the trick. I save lots buty just buying the inexpensive unflavored Quaker Oats (or generic off brand) in a round cardboard container and grinding them up for my homemade eczema cream and soap recipes.

Oatmeal Bath in a Sock

Make Cleanup Easy

If you want all the benefits of an oatmeal bath but want to try and simplify cleanup, put your oatmeal mix in a sock or pantyhose (and tie up the end). When submerged in water you can use it to rub on the skin. This also works for showers (my husband takes showers).

You can also recycle panyhoes with holes in them.

White Opaque Tights Child (X-Large (11/13))
