Best Retro Soccer Jerseys

Soccer Jerseys have come a long way since the simple sweaters worn by the original English clubs at the turn of the century. From team colors and crests to highlighter bright yellow, pink, and orange and covered in a wide array of sponsor names and/or logos the modern soccer jersey is much more a billboard than a simple jersey.

Here is my homage to some of the best soccer jerseys ever. Criteria used are recognition, simplicity, pride, and overall look.

BRAZIL - 1954 to Present

No matter what year you chose, the bright yellow of the Brazilian National Team jersey is sure to strike fear in any opponent making this the best jersey in soccer.

Worn by many of the best international players in the world from Pele to Kaka it is more a symbol of respect than a simple jersey.

1909 Manchester United Jersey

As expected from an English club, this jersey is more respectible than practicle.

The draw-string neckline along with the rose crest give it a feeling that it should not dare be direspected by even a spot of dirt.

The 1909 Manchester Utd. jersey was one of the first to use the now recognizable chevron shape on the chest.

1932 Newcastle United Jersey

Looking more like a referee uniform than a team jersey with the black and white stripes, the early version of the Newcastle Utd. jersey has been replicated in some form or fasion throughout the history of the club.

1930's - 40's England National Team

Plain, simple, sophisticated, and with the ever present "Three Lions" logo this Away version of the 30's - 40's English National Team jersey was presumably 'blood red' for a reason.

Other than the modern Brazilian National team, the early 1900's British teams were possibly the most confidient teams to take the pitch.

2010 U.S. National Team Jersey

A throwback to the U.S. team of the 1940's that completed possibly the biggest upset in international soccer history, this simple yet striking 2010 Nike version was released for the 2010 World Cup.

Though the U.S. team did not fare as well as predicted the jersey will go down as one of the best U.S. and international designs ever.

Ads or no ads on jersies?

Many people believe that placing a company ad or logo on a teams jersey is "selling out" and does not belong.

Should teams place ads on jersies?

No, keep them clean and ad free.

Tipi says:

I like the clean look...but a really nice ad might be nice too!

I don't mind, just show me the money!

karmicchristian says:

Well, sport is commercial and these guys are paid huge monies by their sponsors. So why not!?

Do you have a favorite retro soccer jersey?

The Newcastle United Jersey does indeed look like a referee jersey. I wonder why they chose that design? My favorite is probably the Brazilian National Team jersey as its bright yellow makes such a statement! Nice collection presented here.
