How to Learn Spanish!

Using software to learn Spanish is a great step to take and I sure wish that I had had a computer when I learned Spanish years ago!

Although I didn't have the easy of using Spanish learning software, my kids have. I have been insistent that my kids learn Spanish because I believe with all of my heart that learning another language is one of the most rewarding gifts that you can give yourself. Its like the gift that keeps on giving. WAIT! Isn't that a commercial?!

OK, back to the point here!

How do you go about learning Spanish now?

The first step is to get yourself a dictionary. I have recommended the best that there are, so you might want to start by checking them out.

Let's take a quick pause and you can take a peak at the top dictionaries here.

Remember to keep reading after the dictionaries though! I have great advice that will launch your Spanish learning into Planet Fluent!

After the Dictionary Comes...

You made it back!

Alright, let's move forward here!

After you have a good dictionary, its time to start learning some words and phrases. While I know that many people use Pimsluer and Rosetta Stone, I'm not recommending them just yet. Pimsluer is good, but too repetitive in my opinion. Plus, when you learn a language, you want to be able to start expressing YOURSELF right away, not just repeating phrases. Rosetta Stone is great...but I'll make more comments on that further down on this lens.

So for now, you are still stuck not quite knowing which is the best Spanish learning software. Let me share the one that I have my kids using now.

The best money investment that I have made so far is in a software called the Verbarrator.

This software tackles the heart of Spanish heartache --- VERB CONJUGATION!!

If you have started learning anything about Spanish you have probably already faced the totally new way of using verbs. Most books give lame explanations, heck I SPEAK Spanish and the make me confused! The other books are just 1,000's of pages of words lists, not very practical unless you have the fantastic ability to memorize dictionaries and such.

The biggest challenge to learning Spanish is not just new words, but how to use those words. Bu the time you start into present tense, past tense, future tense and 4 other tenses...your confused and ready to give up!

With this Spanish learning software, I found the answer for teaching my kids verbs! It is easy to use and it lets them customize it specifically to the verb, tense and pronoun that they were working on.

And then I noticed something.

My non-Spanish speaking Latin husband was starting to not just understand the kids and I speaking Spanish, but he started CORRECTLY using verbs himself!

To tell you the truth, I never thought to use the Verarrator software on him. While he has always wanted to learn, Spanish had somehow eluded him. All he did with this software was open it up to see what the kids were doing and...voila! or should we say... No me digas! he learned something!

So, in summary here, verbs are going to be your biggest challenge and so you need a Spanish software that does more than just teach you vocabulary. What good does it do for you to know that the word 'restaurant' for example, with out being able to know if it is/was/might be/used to be/is going to be/will be open anytime soon!?

That's what this Spanish learning software is designed to do!

So, let me take another quick break, and then you can follow me again on the other side!

Duke it out!

Important!

Remember This!

The key to learning Spanish is having a good, solid reason WHY. If you want to learn just because, your chances of success are lower. If your 'WHY' on the other hand is to communicate with your new wife, or to double your income with a job promotion that requires Spanish, you're more likely to succeed!

I would like to learn another language. I used to know basic French (from school) but, alas, that knowledge has long since been filed away and lost!

    Great lens!

Interesting lens. I had to learn being the only anglo among about 30 Mexican guys. You can imagine which words I learned first! Then I married on of the guys and we are now both fluent in Spanglish. I need to clean up my act. Thanks for the comment on my old dog lens. Keep on Squibbing.

Spanish Learning Tip

Here is a quick tip that will go a long way with helping you to learn Spanish!

As I am helping both my children, my husband and a class of students to learn Spanish, I noticed that nearly all of them were struggling with remembering whether a noun is masculine or feminine. Most English speaker tend to struggle with this concept, I have noticed. If you have struggled with this, this tip is for you!

Forget about the words masculine or feminine!

Native Spanish speaker don't learn about the concept of masculine and feminine until they go to school! As children they learn to memorize the noun and its indefinite article TOGETHER, as one unit. In other words the learn 'la casa' altogether, not 'casa' and then try to figure out if its masculine or feminine!

I realize that when I learned Spanish, my friends naturally taught me this way (I learned with friends, not in school!).

When I would ask how to say a word, such as 'book' (which in English we don't need to learn an article with it!), my friends would always tell me 'el libro,' always as a word group.

So, do your best to learn the article with the noun as you go!
