Am 20. März 1991 starb Claptons viereinhalbjähriger Sohn Conor bei einem Sturz aus dem 53. Stock eines Hochhauses in New York. Teil seiner Trauerarbeit war der Song Tears in Heaven, wenn man diese Geschichte kennt, dann versteht man erst die Emotionalität mit der Clapton dieses Lied singt.
