What are Superfoods?
The name superfood is usually given to foods that contain a high proportion of micronutrients that are supposed to help our bodies resist or fight illness, including cancer and heart disease. Some people argue that they may also confer other benefits like increased cognitive ability.
Unfortunately, most trained doctors, dieticians and nurtritionists don't agree with the concept of superfoods. They say that no one food can supply all the nutrients that we need and that we should concentrate, instead, on eating a balanced diet.
It also seems that superfoods go in and out of fashion. Sometimes blueberries are the number one miracle food, then it's pomegranates or blackcurrants or wheat grass or seaweed.

Buy More Fruit - Not Expensive Fruit
One of the problems with superfoods are they are often expensive. Here in the UK, blueberries usually cost more than summer fruit like strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants even when they are all in season. Similarly, pomegranates, like the ones pictured above, are more expensive than oranges or bananas.
Experts argue it is more sensible and the healthier option for people on a small budget to spend money buying a good selection of fruit and more of it rather than spending the same money on one expensive superfood.

We Can't Store Many Nutrients

It sounds like a fabulous idea to eat 100g of blackcurrants and get three times more Vitamin C than an adult's recommended daily amount, doesn't it? Unfortunately, our bodies will use as much Vitamin C or other nutrient as they require and then will dispose of much of the rest.
Sometimes, in fact, an excess of beta-carotene, said to be an antioxidant that helps us combat cancer has been shown to cause cancer if used on its own as a dietary supplement.
Vitamin A is another case where some people can have too much. Pregnant women are advised not to take multi vitamin pills unless specifically recommended for pregnancy. Some pills have an excess of Vitamin A which can cause birth defects.
You can have too much of a good thing.

Here's something else that has achieved superfood status. It is said to help in detoxing the body and that the supposedly high level of chlorophyll cleans our blood. In fact, we can't digest or use chlorophyll because we aren't plants.
Seaweed

Seaweed has also made the list of superfoods. Apparently it can do many different things to prevent disease and increase our well being. These include make our brains work better and improve our immune systems. Not only that, it can also prevent dermatitis, depression and help with obesity.
Unfortunately, tests show that it has pretty much the same nutrients at similar levels as other green vegetables.

- We used to have blueberries growing in yard when I was a kid, but some wild vines choked them out. We can still get fresh blueberries grown in town, but I would rather have them growing in the yard again. They are so delicious!
