Best Timbrel Music - Salvation Army Marches

Timbrels are a longstanding tradition in The Salvation Army. Salvation Army women have played the tambourine for well over a hundred years. It is played during church and while marching in parades.

The Salvation Army has a lot of great music, especially the marches played by the brass bands, but what songs are the best for a great timbrel drill? I have compiled my list of top marches, and I invite you to add your favorite.

The internet has allowed timbrelists to communicate like they never have before. Since they are spread around the world playing in local corps, the spread of ideas has been limited to camp and divisional events. Now, timbrelists can interact worldwide!

The site is very interactive, so please add your comments and suggestions - I am only one person, there are many more timbrelists out there with a ton more ideas to share!

Quote

From William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army

"If I thought I could win one more soul to the Lord by walking on my head and playing the tambourine with my toes, I'd learn how!"
- William Booth, Spoken to the young Rudyard Kipling

Be careful when looking for Golden Jubilee - the one your looking for (with onward christian soldier's in it ...) was written by Milton Kippax not John Philip Sousa (He wrote another march called Golden Jubilee for Military. He also wrote a march tiltled " The Salvation Army" so that can be confusing... but it is not a Sousa march your looking for - FYI

Need A New Tambourine?

Need one for yourself? Need A Bunch To Start A Group?

Tamborines

Starting a new brigade at your corps? or just need to update your own? Here are some great options.

I suggest the smaller ones (maybe one row of jingles) for the beginners. Also a smaller head is easier for them to control (such as 8 inch) - I do not suggest 6 inch unless you have a toddler. They really are too small for Timbrels.

Don't forget the Ribbons!

Tambourines / Timbrels

Non-Official Salvation Army Tamborines / Timbrels

These are not official Salvation Army Tambourines but they are very nice.
They could all work well for Timbrels.

As you can see these are some very economical alternatives to the trade center, that also work well - especially for beginners. I got several for a beginner crew very affordable, and they were great.

Classy Timbrels ! (in my opinion)

How to do Timbrels With Class

This page has a lot of products, as well as video of non traditional timbrel displays and timbrel humor, but on a serious note, I was always taught the traditional timbrel ways, and believe all timbrellists should have a good foundation no matter where they take it. There is more to a timbrel drill than you see at a glance. It takes much work and practice to get it just right.

This is a great place to start if you are a beginner trying to get started with timbrels, or if you are just trying to brush up on the basics.

The Timbrel's Place Today

Salvation Army TimbrelThe Salvation Army and the tambourine have a long history together. But many have asked, does the timbrel have any place in today's society? Is it relative to today? Or is the tradition of timbrels a relic from a time gone by. Is it something that should be put on the shelf and left to the pages of history?

Is the tambourine holding the Salvation Army back by making it look old fashioned?

What do you think about The Salvation Army's timbrel?

Timbrels Go Mainstream !

Brittan's Got Talent
Simon Cowel is not sure what is the difference between Timbrel and Tamborine

Simon Cowell Gives Double Take the Buzzer

Britian's Got Talent (UK)

Double Take Timbrels on Britian's Got Talent (UK)Just check out Simon Cowell's response to Double Take playing their tambourines (I mean timbrels). Now granted, without even deducting points for the Christmas garland, they didn't put on much of a show. I'm not sure how I feel about the two of them doing timbrels with the Salvation Army crest while wearing poorly fitting hot pink Walmart dresses, but that's a whole other debate. The tattoo of the Salvation Army crest is also a bit unsettling.

II wonder how his response would have been to a neatly uniformed larger group with a great routine and great music? Still not very good, I'd guess.

Q. What IS the difference between a timbrel and a tamborine?

A. The ribbons. (Has nothing to do with 1 or 2 rows of jingles)

Many often wonder what the difference is between a timbrel and a tambourine is. They share a common root - the tabret.

The tabret was an ancient instrument much like a tambourine without the jingles. It was a simple hand-held one sided drum. Being easy to use and small it was used in worship, as seen in scripture (Gen 31:27).

The tabret evolved into the timbrel which included the jingles and ribbons and was used with dance during worship. Miriam used it to celebrate after the parting of the Red Sea as seen in scripture in Exodus 15:20.

Over time, the dancing and the ribbons fell to the side, but the instrument went on - in the form of the tambourine, which did have jingles and did have a drum.

As time went by, the tamborine took on variations with the drum side sometimes omitted, and the shape shifting to a half moon.

In the late 1800's, a Salvation Army Salvationist, upon looking at an illustration of Miriam dancing with the timbrel, decided to revive this instrument and include it in their worship.

So at this point, the difference between the timbrel and the tamborine is not whether it has a drum side, and it is not whether it has one row of cymbals or two, it is whether it has ribbons and is used for dance, or whether it is unadorned and used for simply the sound.

Getting Really Creative

I was always taught the very traditional timbrels, and this would have never passed with any of my instructors, but it's a totally different approach. It is kind of cool. (I was always taught that there was no dancing in the SA, but clearly years have passed, and things have changed.)

Old Picture of the Tamborine in Worship at The Salvation Army

From Frank Leslie's Sunday Magazine, Volume 21 - 1887

Here is an old image depicting the tambourine in worship at a Salvation Army meeting. This is not a timbrel drill. Since the instrument is used while sitting in a group, with other instruments, and since it does not have ribbons attached, here this is a tambourine.

Really great lense--very informative. I didn't know there was so much to know about timbrels. I did add my comment in favor of timbrels. I gave this lense a thumbs up and I'm nominating it for the sunshine awards. I'd appreciate it if in returns you would nominated my lense Poems of Inspiration
Go there first and check it out and if you think it worthy please nominate it. The proceeds go to Church! at Bethany, another Christian charity (a website for speading the gospel). Us Christians have to stick together. I like the quote you put from Booth at the beginning. The Salvation Army is doing a good work and I designated part of the proceeds of my Chritmas lense to them.
    Thanks,
    Jim
