Best Time To Conceive?

The most popular question I've been asked from women who are trying to get pregnant is when is the best time to conceive? It's a great question because it is the key element in trying to get pregnant. Poor timing can make all the difference in whether you'll be seeing that positive line on the pregnancy test.

When Is The Best Time To Conceive?

Timing Is Everything

If you are trying to get pregnant, there is no doubt the most important question you should be asking is "when is the best time to conceive?" The reason is that if you don't have the timing down right, there is just no way you are going to get pregnant.

That being said, timing is really all about ovulation. Each month, a woman produces an egg which only lives for about 12-24 hours. In order to get pregnant, the egg must be fertilized during that time. Obviously, this is a very short window of time, but luckily, the sperm can live in a woman's body for several days before the egg is ready. Many women think that they ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle, but this is a myth. Some women with a perfect 28 day cycle will ovulate on the 14th day, but this certainly is not the norm. Generally ovulation does take place sometime in the middle of the month, but it can vary greatly from woman to woman, and even from month to month in some women.

There are several ways you can figure out when you ovulate. One way is to use ovulation predictor kits which test your urine for a particular hormone that signals you are about to ovulate.

Another way is to be aware of the changes in your cervical fluid. When you are getting close to ovulating, your cervical fluid changes from a white creamy type to much more clear and stretchy. This is a great sign that ovulation is approaching.

A really good way to get to know when you generally ovulate (and to make sure you are in fact ovulating) is to use a basal body thermometer (BBT) and chart your temperatures every day for a couple of months. This type of thermomoeter notes very small changes in your body temperature upon waking every morning and these changes are important. Right after you ovulate, your body temperature will go up a few tenths of a degree for the rest of your cycle until your period arrives. When you see this shift up in body temperature, you will know that you have ovulated.

The important thing to remember is that you need to figure out a way of detecting your ovulation (it doesn't matter which method you use), because you must time intercourse for several days leading up to ovulation and on the day you ovulate too.
