Timing your purchases can save a lot of money

Did you know you can save a lot of money just by knowing the right time to buy something?

For instance, digital cameras are competitively priced in April of each year because the manufacturers and stores are in competition to provide the best value for Mother's Day and graduation gifts.

You'll find the best prices on recliners at the beginning of June because of Father's Day, and so on.

January

Just before the Super Bowl, a lot of TV's - especially HDTV's, go on sale to tempt people to have a nice new TV for a Superbowl party. Also check out March and December for more HDTV deals.

Fitness equipment of various types also goes on sale.

In stores and online, you'll find deals on tablecloths, cloth napkins, table accessories, towels, sheets, pillowslips, all kinds of bedding.

Stock up on holiday items like wrapping paper, ornaments, etc. You can use them next year, and you can find stuff for as much as 90% off the retail price.

New car models, boats.

February

Elfa organizing products go on sale for 30% off each year at the Container Store.

Electronics: You can get a great deal on last year's model as the new models arrive in stores and they have to make room. Check out MP3 players, DVD players, and digital cameras.

Perfumes go on sale because of Valentine's Day competition.

Humidifiers in February and March.

New car models, boats.

March

Coats, boots, most winter wear and gear.

Frozen foods - March is generally "Frozen Food Month" each year, and it's a great time to stock up the freezer! If you are interested in buying ahead to save money, see my page about Stockpiling and you'll never have to pay full price for most things again!March is frozen food month. Great month to stock the freezer.

Digital cameras again usually go on sale.

Spring clothes start moving onto sale racks, because the next season's clothing starts coming in.

May

May is great for:

Picnic supplies, patio furniture, pantry staples, athletic clothing, sport shoes - sneakers, athletic shoes; Cookware - pots & pans.

You may find recliners on sale towards the end of the month, and keep looking for them on sale the first couple weeks of June because they are popular for Father's Day gifts.

Designer clothing - shop for Spring collections around Memorial Day. Other clothing also goes on sale after Memorial Day.

June

June is the month for swim suits, summer wear.

Tools - drills, saws

Technology - tech gifts like GPS systems

June is Dairy Month so look for lots of good deals on dairy products. Unfortunately, most dairy items can't be frozen, but cheese freezes fairly well. Look for special coupon inserts to match to the sales & stock up.

Recliners often go on sale in Father's Day promotions.

Lingerie: Victoria's Secret has annual sale in June each year.

July

Furniture: The new furniture styles/lines come in, and the furniture stores need to move out the "old" stuff.

Gym memberships: Some gyms need to boost their membership at this time of year, when the early in the year fervor of exercise and weight loss has waned.

Clothing goes on sale after the Independence Day in the United States.

Computers (sometimes)

August

Lawn and garden: Lawn mowers, yard equipment.

Home: Air conditioners

Apparel: Fall clothing moves to the sale/clearance racks.

School supplies - computers, laptops

Camping equipment.

Gym memberships.

Computers.

September

Automobiles - Experts recommend shopping for cars on weekday mornings.

Garden: Perennials, shrubs, trees

Bicycles.

Apple iPods - when new versions arrive you can get the older model on sale.

October

Home: Grills, kitchen appliances, cookware, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, dryers

Apparel: Winter clothing - coats, hats, scarves

Toys.

During the last week of October, look for deals on electronics through December.

November

Televisions, clothing - especially on "Black Friday" (the day after Thanksgiving) Electronics in general.

On "Cyber Monday" (the Monday after Thanksgiving) many stores have great online deals (this is my favorite!)

Wedding dresses between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Clothing after Thanksgiving.

Cookware, toys.

December

Toys, electronics, new models of cars.

Designer clothing & Fall ready-to-wear - the current season clothing up to 40% off.

Champagne

Wedding dresses, before December 25th.

All other clothing goes on sale after Christmas

Day of week, time of day, season can all make a difference

Tuesdays: new release CD's and DVD's.
Wednesday mornings: Airline tickets, buy 14-21 days before flight date.
All days: Movie matinees are usually before 5 pm.

Groceries: Early morning or late evening for less crowds. Some experts recommend Sunday evenings.

Jewelry: Get the best deals by avoiding Valentine's Day in February and Mother's Day in May.

Gas: Early mornings or late evenings on weekdays.

Appliances: Best to buy during holiday weekends. Experts said September and October are the best months. Based on this, Labor Day weekend is probably the best to buy appliances. But if you can't buy during Labor Day weekend, experts also said that minor holidays like President's Day also offer good discount opportunities on appliances.

Air conditioners - buy in winter.
