Top 10 and Best Movies

Top 10 movies of all time or best movies of all time: everyone has his own list for them. I have taken the following Top 10 movies from IMDb's Top 250 movies as voted by its members. I regard a few of them as Top 10 movies of all time and the rest as best movies of all time.

There are many really great movies produced since the invention of the cinema about one hundred and fifteen years ago. It is difficult to do justice to all. For example, Kurosawa, Ozu, Satyajit Ray, Bergman, Eisenstein and many other great directors and their movies are absent from IMDb's Top 10 list, mainly because most voters on the site are from the U.S. I will give them their due in the series of lenses I will be publishing.

I hope you enjoy this lens.

The Shawshank Redemption [Blu-ray]

Amazon Price: $9.49 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Andy Dufresne, a young honest and respected banker, is accused of killing his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Shawshank, the most severe prison in the state of Maine. Andy is timid. He is reserved. All this make him a prisoner out of the ordinary. Gradually, he develops friendship with Red, a veteran of the facility, a man who knows Shawshank and its codes and practices by heart. Andy has only one goal: to escape...

This fable, which is based on Stephen King's novel Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, is about prison conditions and prison environment, captures your attention throughout its duration. However, it is a hard movie. It depicts all the taboos habitually present in prisons. Apart from being a documentary on the American prison system, it is also the story of how friendship can bind two prisoners coping with the same difficult conditions. I must confess that I was deeply moved by the end. The feeling of liberty expressed in it is exceptional.

A movie that I can watch again and again, always with the same emotion. It is definitely one of the Top 10 Movies of All Time.

The Godfather (Widescreen Edition)

Amazon Price: $7.70 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

1945 in New York: the Corleone family of Sicilian immigrants, are at the head of a powerful Mafia empire headed by Don Vito aka "The Godfather". When Sollozzo Tattaglia, another major figure in organized crime, proposes to Don Vito to associate with him in drug trafficking, he refuses despite the favorable opinion of Sonny, his eldest son. Sollozzo decides to kill Don Vito to be able to deal directly with Sonny. But the attempt fails, and reprisals are not long to come...

Al Pacino plays the son and Marlon Brando is the godfather. The words "Mafia" and "cosa nostra" are never pronounced, but Francis Ford Coppola shows us crude scenes of violence which constantly remind us how terrible organized crime in the 50s was.

This first part of The Godfather trilogy is a masterpiece. It is indeed one of the Top 10 Movies of All Time.

The Godfather Part II - The Coppola Restoration

Amazon Price: $7.92 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The Godfather Part 2 tells two parallel stories: that of the birth of the Corleone family, withRobert de Niro in the role of young Don Vito, and the Corleone family headed by Michael Corleone.

Coppola's orchestration is masterful. He shows us how how Michael pushes the ruthlessness to its extreme to save his family from betrayal, to protect it interests and to make it grow. Based on real events (the trial of the "repentant" Joe Valachi, who, in the late 50s revealed to America the existence of the Cosa Nostra, the attempted introduction of casinos in Cuba in the pre-Castro era, the role played by Meyer Lansky to help the Families succeed), the Godfather Part II is also a parable about power and what it requires to maintain it.

Robert de Niro was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and the movie received six Academy Awards including Best Film in 1974.

For me, it deserves to be classified as one of the Best Movies of All Time.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Amazon Price: $4.98 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a spaghetti western directed by Sergio Leone in 1966 to complete the Dollar Trilogy, starring Clint Eastwood Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. The film tells the story of three aces of the trigger who are looking for lost Confederate gold.

Although the three movies have are many things in common (its treatment, staging and performers), some people have suggested that the Good, the Bad and the Ugly bears no relation to the two other films. They are probably right: contrary to the first two movies of the trilogy, the U.S. Civil War makes its appearance in the scenario, but the Civil War ended in 1865, whereas For a Few Dollars ends in 1873; also, Clint Eastwood does not appear with a poncho but wears a long coat. It is possible that this story is independent of the other two.

The Bad, the Good and the Ugly deserves to be on the list of the best movies of all times.

Pulp Fiction

Amazon Price: $5.28 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Los Angeles: two small-time killers, a dangerous gangster, his gorgeous wife, a treacherous boxer on the run, his French girlfriend, sadistic hitmen, an elegant and devoted boss, a dealer who is also a good husband, two lovebirds quick on the draw. The result is gripping, exhilarating, delicious.

One of the best of Quentin Tarantino's movies, it gained him the Palme d'Or at Cannes and propelled him to the top of the American New Wave cinema. I think it definitely deserves to be on the list of Top 10 Movies of All Time.

Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)

Amazon Price: $6.73 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Released in 1993, this movie based on a story by Thomas Keneally dating from 1982 tells the extraordinary actions of Oskar Schindler, a war profiteer close to the Nazis who helped more than a thousand Jews to escape deportation. This Spielberg movie is simple compared to his other productions. It honors the courage of a man during the darkest moments of the twentieth century. Moving, brilliant and effective.

Schindler's List the film won seven Oscars in 1994 including best picture and best director.

It is worth noting that further to making this movie, Spielberg established the Shoah Foundation, an organization whose objectives are to collect the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and produce documentaries promoting the duty of society to preserve memories.

One of the Top 10 Movies of All Time.

12 Angry Men (50th Anniversary Edition)

Amazon Price: $6.96 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

In a trial where there is overwhelming evidence against a teenager accused of killing his father, eleven jurors are convinced of his guilt. Only the twelfth believes in his innocence. This man tries everything to convince the others...

This movie should be seen by all. Its remarkable accuracy and the hope it provides make Sydney Lumet's film a masterpiece of American cinema.

One of the Best Movies of All Time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Collector's [Blu-ray]

Amazon Price: $33.93 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Jailed for rape, McMurphy is transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Under the care of Nurse Ratched, his strong personality quickly oppose her repressive methods. He is severely punished and tries to strangle her. A lobotomy will transform him into a vegetable, after which an inmate has pity on him and asphyxiates him.

There was no indication that first production by Michael Douglas was to witness a tremendous success. The action taking place in a psychiatric hospital could put off more than a spectator. Instead, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest peaked at the box office and revealed the Czech film director Milos Forman. The Jack Nicholson's interpretation of McMurphy and Louise Fletcher's of Ratched are both impressive, and both were awarded an Oscar their outstanding performance.

One of the Best Movies of All Time. I understand why many place it on the Top 10 Movies of All Time.

Some great movies here. I've seen most of them. IMDB has some different choices than I would have made, but they're all excellent flicks.

You have some great movies here. I even own 5 of them. The best I think though is '12 Angry Men'. Thanks
  • Rankography Jul 30, 2011 @ 10:02 am | delete
great lens, but I think a few classics missing. It is so hard to say the greatest 10 of all time. A Beautiful Mind, Citizen Kane, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone with the Wind, East of Eden, Goodfellas all would have to get serious consideration.

You are right, Rankography. As I said in the intro, it is a list I built from IMDB's. I will come forward soon with other "Best Movies of All Time" soon, the next will include Casablanca, Citizen Kane, etc. Rafick

Nicely done. Top lists are always difficult; everyone looks at movies differently.

I haven't seen all of these but was interested to see Inception (a movie that makes you think) and my personal blu-ray favorite, The Dark Knight. I'm lensrolling your page to my review of that Batman movie.
