What is 3D TV

Why Do We Want It?

When we refers to 3D TV, we includes in this phrase visual display technology which offer us the possibility of experience 3D images in the comfort of our home. These images are found in movies, games, sport and others. If you don't know what we are saying, go at the cinema and enjoy seeing a 3D movie and then you'll agree with me.

In fact, 3D is a strong technology which has the power to move us where the action take place, giving the impression that everything will 'pop' from the screen. I think everybody heard of the 3D movie Avatar. This is the perfect example of special 3D effects. Nowadays, if we have the possibility of watching sports, or concert in 3D, we will enjoy more of every experience, because studies have shown that people are more focused when watching 3D than 2D and if they also have extra equipment such as EEG monitors, skin electrodes, and heart monitors their body will respond different to 3D imaging.

Using the phrase 3D TV, I point the television set itself, but that is not enough because you need a series of elements for watching 3D at home besides the TV and I refer here to the much denigrated 3D glasses and the increasingly popular 3D Blu Ray players.

History and Technology - How 3D TV Works

In the early 1800s, the leading TV manufacturers discovered the 3D and offered us the possibility of enjoying the astonishing 3D image, known also as stereoscopy. This play a joke on your brain creating an illusion of visual depth, illusion produced by displaying two different images (known as a parallax view) and which our brain combine and resolve by offering us a perception of three dimensions instead of two different objects.

3D Glasses

Our brain needs help perceiving images in films, movies, and short clips so we must use special 3D glasses. There are a few types of 3D glasses such as Anaglyph, Polarized or Passive, and Active Shutter glasses.

What Can You Watch In 3D?

To continue the development of the 3D TV it isn't enough to have some 3D channels and Blu-Ray movies. Now the content is poorly and it is absolutely necessary to increase it. I think that the 3D games and extra programming from the channel providers will helping the 3D TV industry to grow. Games in 3D were released on market and they are on great demand but the generated material isn't so great. This will change maybe when new 3D camcorders will become more credible. Now, exists only two way of watching 3D content on 3D television: first of it, 3D conversion (which convert 2D into 3D) and second, that the content to be filmed especially for 3D. There are already movies and games made special for 3D and lots of plans.

Pricing

Because of it's novelty, first sets had some enormous prices and few of us could afford them. But there were some buyers beyond us which could meet the pleasure of having one of their own after enjoying the 3D experience on cinema. But this is no longer available. Now you can find 3D TV sets with an affordable price and with extra features.

The Drawbacks

One of the disadvantages of 3D TVs is the higher price (higher than normal LCD TVs), but the good news is that losing their novelty, the price become lower. Also you have to wear glasses and need extra equipment to view 3D content such as a 3D Blu Ray, but those also become accessible from now on. The 3D content is also a problem because we don't have so much, but with the development of new networks and channels this won't be a problem.

When the possibility of using 3D content will be more spread, then the 3D television will become a permanent entertainment source. Glasses are a drawback because of their costs and because you might have a visitor and not enough pair of glasses. 3D TV works best on larger screen sets, which lead us to our next problem, the room size. Also preferable is to watch 3D in a dark environment and from a specific angle, which is very hard in a small room.

What to watch for in 3D TV quality

Even if it's a 3D set, it might have the same problems as a 2D one and the same attributes that will affect picture quality such as: ''ghosting'' or blurred images(crosstalk), the level of blackness, picture brightness, detail or clarity of images, and the angle you watch the TV from. But technology is in a continuously development and manufacturers would solve in time all that issues and all problems will disappear.
Though some 3D sets are now on top, the picture quality is superior in many models when viewed both in 2D and 3D. Before buying a 3D set you should consult some reviews that might become useful in offering advices about the differences in quality in different sets. You'll find lots of them on the internet, but you must be careful to choose one that has a reputation, to be sure that the information is right.

3D Conflicting Reports

Conflicting reports indicate that people aren't wowed by 3D films but love 3D TVs. In a YouGov survey of British cinema-goers, only 22 per cent of respondents felt 3D improves the cinema experience, while 41 per cent thought 3D is just a gimmick.

However, in the US, a survey about 3D TV conducted at Disney's D23 Expo found that a massive 71 per cent thought it was better than 2D TV and 50 per cent wished they had a 3D TV at home.

Everyone has its own opinion when it comes to 3D content and 3D TV, but a certain fact is that we will see a massive growth for 3D technology in the near future!

3D TV Related Info

Make the most of the latest TV shows, Blu-Rays, games and online services with a new 3D screen.

1. You should sit close enough to the TV for the image to fill your peripheral vision. Aim for a viewing angle of 40 degrees: that means sitting around 1.5m away from a 50 inch 3D TV, which is closer than you'd need with 2D.

2. Active-shutter 3D is the higher-performance way to watch 3D at home, but it costs more per pair of glasses, and some don't like its flickering effect. Passive 3D technology is cheaper and simpler.

3. Don't imagine that buying a 3D TV will automatically open the door to a world of 3D viewing. There's currently hardly any 3D on free-to-air TV, so make sure you have 3D Blu-Rays to make it worthwhile.
