Best Vacuum Cleaners
The first thing to think about when choosing a vacuum cleaner is would an upright or a canister machine be best for me? Or maybe you already have a cleaner but would like something smaller and easier for little spills or for cleaning the car?
Upright vacuum cleaners are generally better for larger rooms with a bigger floor area to clean and canister machines fit better around rooms with lots of furniture and not too much open floor space.
One of the advantages of an upright vacuum cleaner is that it's easier to use and steer, especially if you have back problems, but it takes up more storage space. Canister vacuums are easier to store and are lighter in weight making them ideal for carrying upstairs or outside for cleaning the car.
Both upright and canister vacuum cleaners are capable of cleaning all floor surfaces including carpets, rugs and wood flooring. They also come with a variety of brush and nozzle attachments making cleaning drapes, upholstery and stairs quick and easy.
Most cleaners are now bagless making disposal of dirt and dust easy and clean. The dirt is collected in a plastic bin which can be emptied hygienically without getting your hands dirty. Some of the bagged cleaners have self seal dust bags which also make disposal clean and hygienic with no risk of dirt blowing out.
There have been great improvements to the filtration system on vacuum cleaners. Most of them come with washable reusable HEPA filters which filter out fine dirt, dust, bacteria, allergens and pollen making the return air cleaner and healthier.
Hand vacuum cleaners are very useful and versatile, many of them being cordless so you can use them anywhere. They also come with crevice tool and dusting brush attachments, and some are even capable of cleaning up wet spills.

Which Vacuum Cleaner?
How to Choose
Vacuum cleaners come in different shapes, sizes and prices to suit all homes and circumstances. Before buying think carefully about what you want and expect from a vacuum cleaner.
Consider the following:
- Does anyone living in your home have an allergy?
- Do you have stubborn pet hairs to remove from floors and furniture?
- How much storage space do you have?
- Would you find an upright cleaner easier to use than a canister?
- How big are your rooms?
- Do you want a quick and easy clean up for little spills?
Choose a vacuum cleaner wisely to make your cleaning routine quick and easy and be safe in the knowledge that your home is not only clean but a healthy environment too.
Upright or Cannister?
Some points to consider when choosing a vacuum cleaner....
- Upright cleaners are quicker and easier when cleaning large areas of carpet
- Canister cleaners are much lighter and easier to maneuver, easier for cleaning the car etc
- Both have adjustable heads making switching from carpeted rooms to rooms with hard floors quick and easy
- Both have a range of attachments for cleaning stairs, drapes and upholstery
- A canister vacuum may be easier for cleaning long flights of stairs and difficult to reach areas
- Upright vacuum cleaners are less tiring to use and easier if you have problems with your back
- Canister cleaners are lighter and easier to carry from floor to floor
- Most cleaners are now bagless making disposal of dirt and dust easy and clean
- Both types of vacuum are available with washable reusable HEPA filters which remove bacteria, allergens and pollen from the return air
- Cord storage is easier and tidier with a canister vacuum as it rewinds at the touch of a button into the body of the machine
