Sharp Weapons

Axes, Machete's & Knives

Sharp weapons have been around since the dawn of time. There are many different types of sharp weapons, some more ideal than others for a zombie situation. They have many uses as tools, or as a last minute defense. When confronted with a raving cannibal, running on pure instincts, they are terribly unpredictable, getting close enough with a sharp weapon can be incredibly dangerous. This does not mean that they won't be useful though, whether used for cutting yourself out of a sticky situation, dispatching looters, rapists, or entering into closed buildings.

Hatchets

What's best for the job?

A hatchet is an ideal choice for a melee weapon, although you will have to close the

range between you and the zombie, as long as you have some martial arts training, or know how to control a zombie, it would be ideal for destroying the brain. Hatchets are a miniature version of an axe, featuring a sharp edge and firm grip handle, they can supply enough power to crack through any bones, it can be wielded in one hand and easily brought up, with one quick swing it will damage the brain of the Zombie. It might require some force to pry the hatchet out of the skull; so be ready for that. It is easy to use, and it can be used very quickly to take on many zombies.

Machete

Machete's are an effective tool to use against zombies, they are thick, and sharp, it

is proven that they can slice through bone with enough power and force. It would be effective to slice through a zombie's spinal cord, or slicing through the skull. Assuming that there has been some sort of decay upon the skull, it would be a useful weapon. It is also effective for getting yourself through brush filled areas or forests. You don't want to find yourself cornered because you can't get yourself through some sharp bushes or tall grass.

Knives

Knives have been perfected through time, and used as a primary defense for hand

to hand combat, whether trained with it or not, anyone can use them. For Dispatching Zombies, there are two ways to take them down with a knife, but both of them are your last resort. It is not easy to stab through the skull, but there are two soft areas on the head that can be penetrated, this includes the temple, and the roof of the mouth. This would be a last resort for dispatching just one zombie, which would put you in a lot of danger getting your hands so close to their mouths.

Axes

Can i Axe you a question?

Axe's have been around for centuries, although they have become outdated by

chainsaws, they are still effective for dispatching zombies. The weight of an axe allows for a deadly amount of force to be delivered by the sharp edge. It can easily be used to chop through a zombies skull, or even dismember limbs. The weight of the axe can easily be used to sweep the leg or knock a zombie off balance, if killing them is just not an option, or if you're trying to get somewhere fast. It is also great for chopping down doors, fences, just about anything that needs chopping, it can come in handy if you are stuck in a building, or you need to bash through a lock of some sort. There are a multitude of universal uses for an Axe.

Fire Arms

Firearms are one of the best advancements in personal protection. Whether from every

day use, home protection, or a Zombie Apocalypse, firearms are a bare essential to survival. In a Zombie Apocalypse using a firearm is the most effective way to dispatch a zombie, there is no need to get close enough to your target, or hesitate from being so close to another (pseudo) human being. The sheer power used in a simple pull of a trigger is a testament on it's own. Whether confronted by looters or a small horde of zombies, a firearm is your best protection. Firearms work not only as a weapon, but also as a deterrent to crime, or in a Zombie Apocalypse, a good way to deter looters or murderers.

Hand Guns

Hand Guns are ideal for personal defense, especially during a zombie apocalypse.

They are light weight, and you can carry a lot more ammunition instead of carrying a hulking rifle with you. On top of the supplies you'll already be carrying, a hand gun is your best defense, the featured 9mm Beretta would be my personal choice for dispatching a zombie. Although some may say that the caliber isn't enough to pack a punch, i believe the accuracy factor will be much better than missing with a .45 and carrying a lot more ammunition over bearing yourself. When in a close quarters environment, they are preferred, as well as sub machine guns for close quarters. They allow you to round corners with ease and get your weapon in and out of tight spaces, leaving you enough room to pull your weapon up on a Zombie, rather than trying to get a long rifle up between the two of you and pointing it at their brain. They are also much easier to obtain (depending on where you live) than any sort of automatic weapon due to the Automatic Weapons Ban, and a lot cheaper as well.

You can purchase some great handguns and rifles at Cabelas below.

I recently purchased a fifteen round .40 S&W M&P from Cabelas for a really good deal. Their customer service is excellent and the handguns they ship are excellent quality. This one came with a high quality speed reloader, three magazines, a magazine holster, a kydex holster, and the .40 15 round SW M&P for only 599.99$. You can find it under one of the links below under center fire Pistols.

Bolt Action and Lever Action Rifles

Save BIG during Cabela's Memorial Day sale!
Bolt Action Rifles are one of the best and most accurate rifles for a zombie situation. There are many different bolt-action rifles on the market, but some are preferred over others and time tested. Rifles such as the Mosin Nagant which was used in WWII by Russian snipers, it is proven accurate, very cheap (150$) and has stood the test of time. Unfortunately, the downside of this rifle is the corrosive ammunition, which means you would have to clean your rifle after every shooting to avoid from getting fouled. This would be a hazard you don't want to suffer through when escaping a horde of Zombies.
Save BIG during Cabela's Memorial Day sale!
If you're low on cash and you want a reliable rifle, you can get the Remington Model 770, a cheaper version of the Remington Model 700 because it was built with cheaper parts, making it light weight and less durable. It is slightly less accurate at longer ranges because of the parts, but if you're an inexperienced shooter who is low on funds, it will suffice.

The best option for your money is the Remington Model 700, a civilian version of the M40A5 that has been Marine Corps tested. This rifle has survived through countless battles, built with sturdy materials and is still used by the Marine Corps today. If you want some bang for your buck and the accuracy to hit a target at over 700 yds, this is the sniper rifle that's going to do it.

When it is needed to be accurate enough to hit a head from long range, a Winchester lever-action rifle is ideal. The accuracy of the Winchester rifle would definitely make it effective during a zombie situation when getting a head shot is your only choice. The .30-30 rounds fired from the Winchester would pack enough punch to explode through a zombies head, or even immobilizing one by shooting for ligaments. Although it is not ideal for close quarters, it is definitely ideal for securing an area, checking the perimeter, or defending a second story building.

Semi-Automatic Weapons

Semi-Automatic Weapons such as the AR-15 pictured above would also be a useful weapon to have in the Zombie Apocalypse. Rifles such as the AR-15 are an ideal choice of many because they can be adapted with many customizations, tac lights, different types of scopes, night sights, laser sights, and even suppressors. The AR-15 was first created with a selective fire mode and issued into the armed forces as the M16, in 1963 the AR-15 was marketed as a semi-automatic version of the M16 for civilian sales. There is a distinct difference between the military M16 and the Civilian AR-15, and that's round capacity. In some states they are limited to a limited magazine of fifteen rounds, or even ten rounds in California, which would make them about the same usefulness as a handgun, although they can be used at a longer range. I would not recommend having only one of these weapons on you, i would recommend having both a handgun and some sort of rifle.

Semi-Automatic rifles are effective because you do not have to utilize the pull bolt of a bolt action to chamber a round, this could come in handy when you are being assaulted by more than a few of the undead and need to take them out quickly. The additional bonus is the ability to put accessories on a rifle, including a sling so you don't have to carry it everywhere, but also a scope to improve accuracy at long range, and a tactical light for clearing buildings. The main problem with having one of these rifles is for close quarters, you don't want to get yourself snagged while clearing a building with small hall ways and door ways only to find yourself face first against a Zombie swatting at you while you can't raise your rifle to his brain.

If you don't purchase one of these beforehand, it's not really likely that you'll find them just lying around, it's possible, but not likely. The great thing about the AR-15 rifle is that so many manufacturers make it, and there are so many different models of it to choose from. Some of them can fire .223 Rem rounds, .22 or even 5.56 NATO rounds. Although they are great for range, they are not ideal for clearing tight spaces, as it is very difficult to bring them up in a situation where you're going room to room in a tight space, just like the bolt action rifle. This is why having a handgun as well is very important to your survival.

Ranged Weapons
Crossbows and Compound Bows

Crossbows

A crossbow can be a very effective weapon in a zombie situation, they are easy to reload and quiet, which is very important in a zombie situation. Although it hasn't been confirmed that zombies are attracted by noise, it has been cited in both Armageddon and The Walking Dead that they are attracted to gunfire. Whether they are or not, firing weapons wouldn't just attract zombies, but living humans as well. Whether these humans are dangerous or not, it's best to stay hidden from them because human nature and kindness go out the window during apocalyptic situations. Other Human beings can attract other zombies, attempt to loot you, or worse, especially if it attracts a gang of people that is more heavily armed than yourself, you don't want to put yourself in that situation. Crossbows and Bows are ideal for dispatching zombies quietly and efficiently from range.

High Quality Crossbows

Loading

Bow

Bow's require a more physical person to maintain and operate as opposed to a

crossbow, but if you are skilled with them they can offer longer range and better accuracy. This comes down to a personal preference, choosing between a crossbow and bow. If you want the power to be able to knock down a zombie, then sometimes a compound bow will be the better choice, but if you're inexperienced and want the accuracy to hit a zombie in the head, then a crossbow would be the perfect choice.

Keep in mind, that using a crossbow or a bow isn't just for killing zombies, but also catching wild life or hunting for food in the forests while not scaring away the other wild life. It offers a quiet and discrete, yet lethal option for surviving in the wild. You must always make an attempt to find your bolts or arrows after firing them, or retrieving them from a Zombies' corpse. This is both a detriment and a plus to using a crossbow or bow. You are limited to a small amount of ammunition, but it is also reusable, which hand gun ammunition or rifle ammunition are spent as soon as you use them.

Blunt Weapons
Bats, Shovels, and Nightsticks

Blunt weapons are not the best choice for a

Zombie situation, but when you have no other choice, you will be able to incapacitate or take down a zombie. It requires a lot of force and energy to crack a zombies skull, it is dangerous to attempt to take out more than one zombie with a blunt weapon. You will be physically exhausted after dispatching one, possibly two zombies with the amount of effort that it takes to dispatch one. It is also a hindrance due to the fact that you will be purely focused on that one zombie, you will get a sort of tunnel vision and you will be unable to watch your back. Before you engage in combat with the zombie, make sure the entire area is clear of other zombies, they can hide and come out of anywhere, even walk through doorways without you expecting them. Make sure someone within your group is watching your back and scanning the area just in case you get in a moment where you're about to be bitten.

Baseball Bat

Although normally used as a sport utility, it's as blunt as you're going to get. Aluminum

bats could easily take down a zombie, and they are much more durable than a wooden bat, but it would physically exhaust the user. A wooden bat would be much less durable than an aluminum bat when dispatching a zombie, but splintering a bat means it can still be an effective weapon, it can be used as a sharp object, much like a knife to impale the Zombie. It is definitely not an effective weapon to be used against more than one zombie, or recommended to use in a Zombie Apocalypse, but as a last minute notice and easy to grab weapon, it will suffice.

Night Stick

Although blunt weapons are not the best choice for a Zombie Apocalypse, i would

recommend a nightstick as one of your personal defense weapons. Not only are they effective on Zombies, but they can be used for breaking into places or anything necessary for survival. They can easily be used to cripple a zombie, or even, much like other blunt weapons, be used as a weapon to bash in the skull of a zombie. You will never know when it might come in handy, but having a discrete weapon that is collapsible, and easy to carry is very valuable. It could mean the difference between life or death as a last minute defense, or if you're in a situation that you're held at gun point.

Telescoping Nightsticks

Shovel

A Multi-Purpose shovel is almost a perfect tool for a zombie apocalypse. It is not

only great for utility, but the sharp edges of a shovel can easily be used to cause massive damage to a zombie, or even bash their brains in with the blunt side. Shovels such as the ones featured in the picture are a great tool. With an attached Machete, Shovel Head, and Axe, it will be a perfect multi purpose for a Zombie Apocalypse, from breaking down doors, to chopping through high brush, it's a great tool to have. A regular shovel in general would be a decent tool to dispatch a zombie, although it would be physically exhausting just like other melee weapons, the fact that it has a sharp edge makes it effective to break through the skull. Shovels are ideal for digging under chain link fences or getting through areas that require some force.

Ineffective Weapons
Chainsaws and Katana's

Chainsaw

Many people who are inexperienced or don't realize how a chainsaw works,

would claim that chainsaws are the best weapon for a zombie apocalypse. This is incorrect. You have to ask yourself, is there a chainsaw readily available to you? Have you ever used a chainsaw? Are you certain it has enough gas? Do you have gas to refill it? It's simply an ineffective weapon of choice for a Zombie Apocalypse, it is limited to how much gas you have, and it would be a terrible choice for slicing through a Zombie's head. The amount of power required to lift up a chainsaw (as yes, they are quite heavy) and bring it down on a zombies skull would be exhausting. A chainsaw normally requires an up and down motion, almost like a curve, you would not pierce through a zombie's skull immediately, leaving them effectively writhing back and forth in front of you, leaving you in danger of potentially being pushed backward with the chainsaw onto yourself, or being bitten. Gas is also a crucial issue, in a world where there would eventually be no power, gas would be one of the most vital resources. You wouldn't want to waste gasoline on a chainsaw when it can be used to get an extra 50 miles away. When gas stations are completely shut down, there will be no way to get the gas out of the pumps without power.

Katana

Although many internet nerds claim that they're going to be with their trusty Katana in

a zombie survival, it is not an effective weapon for survival, and they're going to die, quite fast. You have to look at this realistically, a Katana is not something you just find lying around, and if you have bought one, it's most likely a replica or a newly fashioned one. The Truth of the matter is that a Katana is not effective, not even for killing one zombie. Katana's are not made from the same metals they were feudal china or japan therefore they're less durable now than they were before (Although they weren't very durable before) they were designed for slashing at crucial arteries, not slicing through people, or bones like they are depicted in many anime's and movies today. The new metals cannot cut through bone and it would likely break the blade before even cracking the skull, now, marring and skinning the zombie, that would happen, but it would in no way kill them unless you get a perfect pierce through the eye cavity, which is hard to do with such a long blade. You are much more likely to be bitten when slicing into a zombie when your blade breaks in two and they collapse upon you. This is not a last resort weapon, it's a weapon that's going to get yourself killed.

I have received a few hair brained comments about this weapon i would like to address because i clearly didn't make it clear enough.

          1. Using this weapon WILL GET YOU KILLED
          2. There is NO POSSIBLE way to bring up a Katana when walking through a confined
          space or doorway
          3. I will post a video SHOWING how "effective" the Katana is on cutting bone

Katanas Do NOT Work

powered by Youtube
I will reiterate myself, Katana's will GET YOU KILLED. They are ineffective at cutting through bone, as i said. This was a person who was genuinely fond of Katana's and it chipped his blade from trying to cut through a shin bone. The long sword did a fine job of cutting through it, so if you want to get yourself a long sword, well go ahead. If you still want to be foolish enough to get a Katana, be my guest too but I've given you the evidence to see that they do not work. Sure, they're pretty to look at, but when you have a relentlessly marauding corpse heading your way who isn't going to give you a second to hit the same place more than a few times, you'll wish you grabbed something more efficient.

revolvers can and will jam at some point. it all comes down to operation of the weapon. the round could very easily slip from the chamber just enough to bar the whole weapon system until you can unjam it.

i would recommend a crowbar. good choice for every free man.
it is both a handy tool and head can easily smash a skull. and very handy for scavenging the post-apocalyptic world.

on a side note and possibly off topic, some bite-proof armor can be very usefull. you wouldn't even need kevlar as a regular leather jacket would stop post-human teeth and keep you safe when using short weapons such as a knife
