The Best Workout Watch
I needed a heart rate monitor watch and so far as I can tell, the Garmin Forerunner 405 CX GPS Sport Watch with Heart Rate Monitor has to be one of the best heart rate monitor watches ever made.
As a bit of a watch nut and being at a point in my life where fitness is essential, I believe that if I am going to do all the work required to stay in shape, I want to have the best workout GPS watch available to keep track of it all.
To me the Garmin Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch with the built in Heart Rate Monitor (Blue) looked like it was more of a runners watch than the others. And so far it has done a great job keeping track of my heart rate zones. Not only will it keep track of my heart rate and exercise route it even performs a few functions that I never expected a work out watch to be able to perform.
But, before I get into all of that, I must admit that the Garmin 405CX was not my first choice as far as work out watches go.
In fact, I really had my eye on the Garmin Forerunner 310XT Waterproof Running GPS With USB ANT Stick and Heart Rate Monitor that you see here to your right.
Big, bold and ugly isn't it? Well, that is what I thought when I saw it.
Anyhow, the Garmin 310XT is more or less set up to be a Triathlon fitness style watch. Running is my forte, not bicycling or swimming.
Instead of dropping the extra $200 for the Garmin 310 XT, for all those cool functions I didn't really need, I just stuck with the 405CX running watch with gps.
If you are into all that Iron Man Triathlon type stuff, you may want to take a look at the Garmin 310XT Triathlon Watch. Though I think it is a bit on the ugly side, it may be one of the best sports watches on the market. It did rate as the best fitness watch for that type of workout.
As I was saying, the Garmin 405 GPS Sport Watch was my choice for a runners watch. All I needed it to do was keep track of the time, distance, and pace that I ran or walked. But it also kept track of my calories burned and my heart rate for the full time. I am not sure how accurate the calories burned are though. I kind of doubt that any watch or device can get that right, so I do not pay it that much attention. I am much more concerned about the calories going in. I keep that in line and the rest will take care of itself.
Granted, this unit may be for a more serious runner than a person like myself. I only run 6 to 8 miles a week on the road or treadmill, but I like the idea that it can handle so much more than what I put it through.
I will tell you that if you plan on using this on a treadmill, indoor track, or an elliptical, you will want to have the optional Garmin Foot Pod for the Forerunner. And for bicycling you may want to get the Garmin Forerunner Bicycle Mount Kit
.
Now I didn't get the bicycle kit, but the Foot Pod was a must have.
The one thing I do not care for about with this Garmin GPS sports watch is the battery life. I do not mind setting it on the charger or that it is chargeable, but there has been a time or two that I forgot to set it on the charger and when I went to use it again, it was dead. Sure. Sure. That was my bad, but it was still annoying.
Other than that. I love this thing. And unless it craps out on me, or they come out with a massively better GPS watch, this thing should last me for years of running. I would defiantly recommend it tho my friends and family. You too, if you like...

- Yes, I have the Polar FT7. I bought it because it was the cheapest Polar with data upload. I love it. It works well and only cost me about $100 Australian. Good bargain!
