Best Xbox Adventure Games

Ranked #2,408 in Games, #93,426 overall

Figure and Fight Your Way to Riches and Glory

It's not easy picking out the best Xbox adventure games, especially since the lines between game genres are more blurry than ever. That's why you'll find an interesting mix of games here, from LEGO-inspired to ninja-y to demonically possessed.

If you're here, you probably have some idea of what you look for in an adventure game. For me, an adventure game has to start off with a decent storyline; there has to be a good reason that the characters are going "off on an adventure." Then, there has to be some action and excitement involved. Lastly, I need a bit of strategy or puzzle-solving thrown in; after all, we're not talking about your typical hack-and-slash or FPS.

One last note: I'm focusing on new games, so unless a game has a relatively new release or update, sorry, it won't be on the list!

Honorable Mentions

Vote to Move Them Up!

Mini Ninjas: This game is what you get when you combine the makers of Hitman with adorable cuteness, and throw in a terrific art style for good measure.

Alan Wake: If you're looking for an Xbox adventure game with elements of horror and psychological thriller, this is what you want. The strategic puzzle-solving is nicely complemented by bouts of combat with strange creatures of the night.

Toy Story 3 - The Video Game: It seems that every movie that comes out nowadays is required to have its own video game, so it's hard to separate the blatant money-grabs from the video gaming gold. Luckily, this Toy Story game comes out on top. Just like the movie it's based on, this game manages to blow away all expectations with a refreshing gameplay variety and a sandbox mode that adds hours worth of interesting content.

Gears of War 3: For those who can't get enough of action shooters, it doesn't get any better than Gears of War. There's plenty of debate over whether it's better classified as a shooter game or an action/adventure game (with IGN falling on the "Action" side and internet commentators falling on the "Shooter" side); however, no one will argue that it's a game remarkable for its gameplay, its graphics, and its storyline. So if you decide to pick this one up, just realize that there will be plenty of gun-slinging involved.

Bayonetta: It's hard to receive a better endorsement than IGN's Ryan Clements stating "Bayonetta is the best action game I've ever played." Directed by Hideki Kamiya (of Devil May Cry fame), the cinematic nature of this title dances the line between "movie" and "game." The ridiculosity involved whenever the vestige-of-an-ancient-witch-clan main character gets into a fight make it a good game, and the skill and strategy needed to excel make it a good adventure game.

Where The Wild Things Are

From Book to Movie to Game

This certainly wasn't a highly anticipated Xbox adventure game, and some people might puzzle over its inclusion in the list. But I like unique feel of the environment and having a chance to return to Spike Jonze's mesmerizing adaptation of Maurice Sendak's creation.

Here's another game originally based in other mediums that manages to be a big hit even though it's so different from its source material. Although this games is somewhat geared towards the younger set, the true adventure gameplay (with an explorable environment and puzzles to solve) and the quality of the game ensure it a spot on the list.

War Without Bore

R.U.S.E.

Amazon Price: $10.49 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $29.99

By now you shouldn't be surprised to see a war game on an Xbox adventure game list (what with all the other genre-mashing that's been going on). This RTS (real time strategy) game has you commanding WWII era armies over huge maps using endless combinations of war tactics. The main reason that I include R.U.S.E. on this list is the amount of thought that goes in to building a successful campaign, especially when you get into multiplayer mode.

#8: Portal 2

The Sequel to the Sneak Hit

Portal 2

Amazon Price: $29.05 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $29.99

Who would have thought a game with a rather obtuse storyline involving robots, space portals, and cake would end up being so popular? For a while, this game was the only thing anyone in the know on the Internet could talk about. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's worth a look. Especially since the addition of a two-player mode since the original makes for a whole new experience.

#7: Rayman Origins

An Old Favorite, Resurrected

Rayman Origins

Amazon Price: $15.00 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $29.99

After 15 years, a game franchise needs more than some updated graphics to keep it fresh. That's why it's so refreshing to see the lengths that UBI Soft went to ensure that Rayman Origins would be a success. A great on-screen multiplayer mode and awesome graphics are enough to make us remember why platform games hold such a special place in our hearts. For more information, check out this review on Ugo.

#6: Mass Effect 3

Available March 6, 2012

Okay, so this game hasn't been released yet. But there's no way that they can mess up one of the most highly anticipated games of the year (fingers crossed!)

Mass Effect 3

Amazon Price: $37.00 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $59.99

Wasn't sure whether to include this the first time around, but my brother convinced me! This game does have a very strong shooter genre influence, but the RPG elements and dynamic storyline tip it over into "adventure" territory. It will be especially interesting to see how the Kinect connectivity plays out on this one.

#5: Saint's Row

The Third

Saint's Row: The Third

List Price: $59.99

I had to think a while before I decided to include this game. However, with the rich storyline and the different situations you get into depending on your choice of gameplay, it truly is a modern-day adventure. Just watch out for the truly mature just about everything, if that's the kind of thing that bothers you. Check out the Gamespot review for more Saint's Row goodness.

#4: Enslaved

Odyssey to the West

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

Amazon Price: $9.00 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $19.99

The strategy needed to solve Enslaved: Odyssey to the West makes it more than just another point, shoot, repeat title. In addition, as one of the truly original titles on this list (that isn't a sequel or based on a book or movie), the freshness has its own appeal. You play Monkey, a brute tied in life and death to wily Trip, who will stop at nothing to escape slavery and return home.

#3: L.A. Noire

Good Ol' Detective Work

L.A. Noire

Amazon Price: $13.00 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $29.99

Although this game has some mixed reviews on Amazon (click the link to read more), I'm including it because it's different from a lot of games on this list. If you're into games like this, the slow gathering of clues and ability to explore the historic city will make up for the fact that the decisions you make in-game don't seem to have much effect on the storyline.

#2: Assassin's Creed

Brotherhood

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Amazon Price: $18.99 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $39.99

In single-player mode, you play the role of an assassin we've come to expect from the earlier games, but you can also recruit assassins and deploy them across an interesting world. Alternately, play with others in a multiplayer match that forces you to use cunning instead of the typical online run-and-gun style of fighting.

And the #1 Best Xbox Adventure Game Is...

... Skyrim!

#1: Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim

The Most Epic of Games

If you've ever wanted to go on a grand, world-exploration style adventure, but been too worried about pirates, malaria, and starvation, then here's the game you've been waiting for. Skyrim lets you live out all of your journeying adventures without having to leave the comfort of your own home. If you've played any of the Elder Scrolls series before, you'll already have some sort of idea of where this game is taking you, but you don't need a history with the series to fully enjoy the latest installment.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Amazon Price: $47.99 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $59.99

Though this Xbox game is officially classified as role-playing, it has enough adventure in it to qualify for this list (in my opinion). The sheer quality of the game means it should qualify for just about any list. What really helps to suck you into the world is the fact that you can't predict what's going to happen next, as with many other games that get boring a few hours in. You never know who is going to show up and try to aid, kill, or thwart you. You can also choose the style of play that's right for you. If you prefer to stick to the main quest, feel free; but it's absolutely not a necessity, and you can wander to your heart's content in the world instead if that's your thing.
