5 reasons Ghostbusters is the best 80's movie ever!

Ranked #17,562 in Entertainment, #213,450 overall

Ghostbusters

There are a lot of great 80's movies: Princess Bride, The Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing, Gremlins, Top Gun, Back to the Future and the list goes on and on. My number 1 pick as the best 80's movie ever is the Ghostbusters. What's not to love with four guys dressed up in exterminator suits, carrying Proton Packs and chasing all over town catching ghosts.

The movie starts off with three unemployed scientists looking for work decide to start a ghost catching business using an old firehouse as their headquarters. The stumble upon a gateway to another dimension that will release untold evil throughout the city. They spend all their time chasing pesky ghosts and battling an ancient Sumerian God named Gozer the Gozerian.

Reason 1

Great Cast and Characters

Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) Peter has a PhD in Phychology and Parapsychology. Worked in academic research with partners, Dr. Ray Stantz and Dr. Egon Spengler. After getting fired he got together with the guys to form the Ghostbusters. In both movies Peter has an on-again off-again relationship with Dana. Peter the one that always gets slimed on.

Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) Ray is the Ghostbuster that everyone loves and is often considered the "heart" of the Ghostbusters. He is very enthusiastic about his work and often long winded and very technical in his explanations of scientific and paranormal phenomena. Ray and Egon are responsible for all the paranormal theories and creating the equipment used for catching and containing the ghost.

Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) Is the genius of the group. He is always creating new inventions and gadgets usually with the help of Ray. Their most famous invention is the Proton Pack, which is used to help capture the ghost.

Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson) Winston joins the team later in the movie when he is the only applicant to show up for the job interview. He was hired immediately and quickly became a good friend and a valuable member of the Ghostbusters team.

Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver) Dana is Peters love interest in both movies. In the first movie she gets possessed and turned into a dog. In the second movie an ancient sorcerer attempts to possess her baby to take over the baby's body and become alive once again.

Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) She is the sassy sometimes rude secretary. She is secretly in love with Dr. Egon.

Reason #2

The Ghosts

Ghostbusters - Slime Zone

There are some really cool ghost in both of the Ghostbusters movies. There was the scary librarian ghost and Slimer. Slimer is probably the most popular ghost in Ghostbusters. He also was the first ghost that the Ghostbusters caught in the first Ghostbusters movie. He was so popular he later starred in his own Slimer! cartoons.

Then there was Gozer the Gozerian or "the Destructor. He is a Sumerian shapeshifting god and was the major supernatural enemy in the first movie. He takes the thoughts of the people around him and brings them to life. He uses Ray's thought about marshmallows to create the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Reason 3

The Proton Pack

The proton pack is the weapon the Ghostbusters use to help capture the ghost. It works by firing a positively charged stream of protons that attract the negatively charged energy of a ghost which weakens the ghost allowing the Ghostbusters to position the ghost over a trap. I remember wanting my very own proton pack when I was little so that I could catch ghost too.

Ghostbusters is my favorite movie

I think that Ghostbusters is one of the best 80's movies. There were so many good ones made in that decade that it's hard to pick a favorite.

I never really cared for Ghostbusters.

Reason #4

The Real Ghostbusters cartoon

Shortly after the success of the movie Ghostbusters the cartoon The Real Ghostbusters was created. It ran from 1986 to 1991. It continued the adventures of the Ghostbusters with the help of their secretary Janine and their old nemesis Slimer. I have a lot of fond memories watching The Real Ghostbusters on ABC keeping the city safe from ghosts, demons and other paranormal creatures.

During the third season in 1988 the series was given an hour long time slot with the addition of the Slimer sub-series which focused on the character Slimer.

The Ghostbusters car

The Ghostbusters car (also known as an ectomobile or ecto-1) is a 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor limo/ambulance. This car is really neat! It has a special pull-out rack in the back to hold all the Ghostbusters proton packs. It also has some cool gadgets mounted on the top of the car that includes numerous detectors such as radar, sensor mics, infrared and a satellite microwave uplink. You can even buy your very own ectomobile on ebay!

Ghostbusters II movie trailer

It's been 5 years since their battle with Gozer the Gozerian. A restraining order has been placed on the Ghostbusters forbidding them from catching any more ghost. This forced the guys to find other jobs. Peter and Dana broke up. Dana married another guy who she later divorced. She is now raising her 8 month old son Oscar. Peter hosts local TV show called "The World of the Psychic." Ray owns a bookstore and he and Winston perform at children birthday parties. Egon is busy conducting experiments. The Ghostbusters must reunite to help save Dana and her baby from a 16th century tyrant who is trying to take over the baby's body so that he can become alive again.
