Download Anime Episodes

*UPDATE 1/15/08*
Recently I located a site that lets you download DVD quality episodes for hundreds of anime series, as well as anime movies.

When I first visited the site I was ready to leave until I checked out the enourmous amount of episodes for download and the super fast download speeds. I signed up and it's like I have the boxed set for all my anime series at my finger tips (i know that sounds corny, but im really excited about my find). I'm usually the last person to sign up for anything online, but I can honestly say this was a great decision.

Check it out here

Welcome to a "best of the best" guide into the world of japanese animation. Below you'll find a list of the greatest anime series. If it's on this list and you haven't seen it, you're missing out!

This guide will also provide you with sites where you can view free episodes of the listed anime series so that you can see if it's a series you'd be interested in. As somebody who would much rather download something for free rather than buy it, in my experience when it comes to anime: quality is everything. If you want the true anime experience purchasing the DVDs is a must. After comparing watching an episode on DVD as compared to one that I downloaded, it's no contest.

The thing that I hate about buying anime DVDs online is that I am never sure whether I am getting the best deal or buying the finest quality DVD collection. What I have done is included the best deals for purchasing the DVD collections for each of these series. The included DVDs will be updated as often as I find better deals.

So feel free to browse the list of anime series and check back often for daily updates and additions.

What is Anime?

Anime is an abbreviation of the word "animation". Outside Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the West, not all animation is considered anime; and anime is considered a subset of animation.

While some anime is hand drawn, computer assisted animation techniques have become quite common in recent years. Like any entertainment medium, the story lines represent most major genres of fiction. Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, and included in video games. Additionally, some are produced as full length motion pictures. Anime often draws influence from manga, light novels, and other cultures. Some anime storylines have been adapted into live action films and television series.

1. Cowboy Bebop

Action/Adventure

In the year 2071, the crew of the spaceship Bebop travel the solar system trying to apprehend bounties. In the slang of the era, "Cowboys" are bounty hunters. Most episodes revolve around a specific bounty, but the show often shares its focus with the pasts of one of each of the four main characters and of more general past events, which are revealed and brought together as the series progresses.

2. Ghost in the Shell

Action/Adventure

Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the covert operations section of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, Section 9, which specializes in fighting technology-related crime. She may be named after one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan and Shirow makes reference to them at the end of the second manga. Although supposedly equal to all other members, Kusanagi fills the leadership role in the team, and is usually referred to as "the Major" due to her past rank in the armed forces. She is capable of superhuman feats, and cybernetically specialized for her job-her body is almost completely mechanized; only her brain and a segment of her spinal cord are organic.

The setting of Ghost in the Shell is cyberpunk or postcyberpunk, similar to that of William Gibson's Sprawl trilogy. More than other cyberpunk authors, however, Shirow focuses more on the ethical and philosophical ramifications of the widespread merging of humanity and technology. The development of artificial intelligence and an omnipresent computer network set the stage for a reevaluation of human identity and uniqueness. More so than the films, the manga tackles these questions head on: Kusanagi and her colleagues face external threats and also suffer internal conflict over their own natures.

3. Full Metal Panic!

Sci-Fi/Action

Full Metal Panic!, the animated series follows the events and relationships surrounding Sousuke Sagara, a professional soldier of a covert, international, anti-terrorist mercenary group named Mithril, and Kaname Chidori, a spirited, Japanese high school student that unbeknownst to her, is more than she seems.

Due to his Japanese heritage and young age, Sgt. Sousuke Sagara is selected to go undercover as a transfer student and secretly remain Kaname's undetected bodyguard. With orders only to protect her from abduction by an unknown hostile force, neither Sousuke nor his two fellow Mithril soldiers assigned to the mission - Sgt. Kurz Weber and Sgt. Major Melissa Mao - are told any further details except to remain undetected and avoid drawing attention to their charge.

For Sousuke, a regular bodyguard job would be a piece of cake, except that this military bred soldier has no concept of the nuisances and pitfalls of the unfamiliar territory that is "high school" making the situation less than smooth...

4. Big O

Sci-Fi/Film Noir/Action

Forty years prior to the events of the series, disaster struck. The world was turned into a vast desert wasteland and the survivors were left without memories. The story takes place in Paradigm City, a corporate police state run by the Paradigm Corporation. The town is recognized for its geodesic domes, a giant structure that houses the richer citizens and segregates the poor to living outside the domes.

The Big O deals with the nature of memories. A memory is a record stored in the brain of an organism, but in Paradigm City memories can mean so much more. "Memories" embody the lost knowledge of its residents, and can take the form of records from before the Event, forgotten artifacts from the previous era or manifest themselves as recollection, hallucinations or recurring dreams.

5. Bleach

Action/Adventure

Ichigo Kurosaki is a rough-and-tumble teenager who has always had the special ability to see spirits. The story begins with the sudden appearance of an oddly-dressed stranger in Ichigo's bedroom. This stranger is the shinigami Rukia Kuchiki, who is surprised at his ability to see her. Their resulting conversation is interrupted by the appearance of a hollow, an evil spirit. After Rukia is severely wounded during battle while trying to protect Ichigo, she decides to transfer half of her powers to Ichigo, hoping to give him the opportunity to face the hollow on an equal footing. Ichigo unintentionally absorbs all of Rukia's powers instead, allowing him to defeat the hollow with ease.

The next day, Rukia appears in Ichigo's classroom as a transfer student. Much to his surprise, she now appears to be a normal human. She theorizes that it was the unusual strength of Ichigo's spirit that caused him to fully absorb her powers, thus leaving her stranded in the human world. Rukia has transferred herself into a gigai - an artificial human body - while waiting to recover her abilities. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over her job as a shinigami, battling hollows and guiding lost souls to the afterlife.

Fuu convinces them both to come with her in search of a mysterious samurai that smells like sunflowers and their journey begins.
