Gets Your Toes Tappin'

There's nothing like a groovy bass line to get you moving your feet! What is it? Is it the deep toned thumping of the acoustic bass? Or the electronic pulse of the electric base that grabs the audience's ear? Either way, read on and find out what I think are the best bass lines in popular music. And you KNOW I wouldn't steer you wrong!

Candy - Cameo

In the 80s, Larry Blackmon, his high-top fade and his, ahem, red codpiece were all over the radio. This bass line was so good they even used it for a Cherry Coke commercial...back when Cherry Coke was actually popular.

Journey - Don't Stop Believing

Whoa. Never realized how tight Steve Perry's pants actually were. Anyhoo, great bass line, immediately recognizable and will get the worst folks up to sing at the karaoke bar. Although Steve featured the guitar riff at the beginning, the bass line makes the song. Just ask Tony Soprano.

Money - Pink Floyd

"Money, it's a hit/ Don't give me that do goody good bull----."
I was too young to understand the meaning of this song when I first heard it in the 80s, but boy was that a thumping bass line.

Stand by Me - Ben E. King

The base line was the song, for the most part. In the first section of the song, it's the bass, the minimal percussion and Ben. Even as the violins come in, they mirror the bass line a few octaves higher. Listen and enjoy. What a great song!

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

You know it, you love it, when you heard it you turned up the radio. Michael Jackson may be just a little bit off, but no one can deny his power as a musician, singer and dancer.

Queen - Under Pressure

It was a hard choice between this bass line and "Another One Bites the Dust" but since Vanilla Ice liked it so much he STOLE it, I wanted to include it.
