Investing in Sports Cards

For some people, sports card collecting is a hobby that's a bit hard to understand. But if you're a sports buff who gets a high watching say, baseball, football, and basketball, its the other way around: those clueless about sports are missing half of their lives!!

And how about sports cards? Well, if a certain sport is your church, and certain players are your high priests... then sports cards must be a sacred glimpse of heaven.

Price Updating

There is one good way to get updated: study an authoritative current price guide magazine.

But have you ever wondered how prices are chosen? Of course, we're talking about issues aside from the physical quality of the card. There is no mystery here; what people go after is the worth, or simply speaking, the overall reputation of the player on the card. It all boils down to people paying only for the overall value of the player and how he plays his game.

Monthly card guides like Beckett and Tuff Stuff are established names that collector buffs use to determine prices. But a few price guides are all over the Internet, and are for free, available at zero cost and time. On NAXCOM.com, for example, you can see what the last sale price occurred at, the high and low price and competing seller prices, and buyer offers.

Here is a Price Guide site (from Beckett) and two card bidding site:

Card valuation

At right: Peyton Manning is second football player on the list for highest career passer rating behind only the retired Steve Young.

First, Order

It's very prudent to divide your cards into groups: which will you sell? Which ones do you want to keep, or at least not get rid of for now? It's up to people what they want to do first: organize the collection, then assign value? Or the other way around? Either way, one will drastically affect the other.

Then try to put some order among your cards: by year, by brand, etc. but most definitely according to sport. After these, only then do you start designating value.

Labels and tracking

As a follow up to your meticulous work above, there are many ways to keep label and keep track of a card's confirmed value. You can store records on paper or in the computer. Find also a way to put price labels on the outside cover of your cards, thus making things convenient and eye-friendly should you decide to bring them to a meet, show them to an surprise visitor, or quickly scan them for critical information.

Do prices change? They do, and it is about every month. Nevertheless, once you are familiar with your cards and your pricing magazine too, replacing old price labels will be speedier.

Earning through Selling

Why and Why Not to Buy

One reason to buy is of course, the fact that a few of the stars you placed a buck on with your cards may become legends one day. You may just be one of the few who took good care of the cards of these stars!

One reason not to take it so seriously and not to put so much money on it is that making it big in this otherwise fun hobby is simply hit and miss.

To Hold or Not to Hold on To Cards

The agonizing problem is sometimes not knowing whether to wait for the card to acquire higher value, or to sell it because it has appreciated greatly, or to hold on to it. What you need to do is to think clearly. For example, if you are in no hurry to sell, and card has been picking up value for more than 10 years already, then continue keeping it.

Where to Get Your Cards

Travis Moen scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in the 2007 NHL Playoffs against the Ottawa Senators.

Checking the Authenticity of Your Card

This section seems to belong to the end of this article, but then again the information here may be a valuable help to your current collection. Some companies are offering authentication and grading services. A collector simply mails the card then receives a report on the genuineness and grade of the physical quality of the card. Grading companies ship back the item encased and labeled. NAXCOM.com highly recommends the following companies:

1. PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

2. Beckett (BGS - for Modern Cards, BVG - for Vintage)

3. SGC (Sportscard Guarantee Company)

4. Global Authentication (GAI)
