After looking at basic specifications and compatibility, I think one of the best ways to choose the best wireless routers is to look at customer reviews. Most routers seem to do do their job fine, but the not so good ones tend to be finicky. These are the one to avoid.

The speed of your router is given in Mbps or megabits per second. That is a measure of the amount of data that can be transferred per second. Today's routers have speeds of 150 to 450 Mbps.
Range is the distance that the signal can carry. If you have a multilevel house, this can become very important. An N router will have better WiFi range than a G router, but otherwise, range coverage can be difficult to compare. If you have problems you can always invest in a range extender.
Additional features that may or may not benefit a person depending on their wireless needs are Gigabit ports, QoS support and dual band capabilities.
