Where Dreams Meet Reality

A lot has been written about the Hindi film industry -- from the controversy to its being called 'Bollywood' (an obvious play on 'Hollywood' and some might say, a discreet reference to the blatant plagarism of American films) to the growing worldwide audience driven by Non-Resident Indians and the appeal of the escapist brand of cinema that is the industry's hallmark. This lens is an attempt to showcase recent Hindi movies that have etched themselves in my memory. While most of them continue to adhere to the musical genre of film-making that has typified Hindi movies, they stand out from the rest of the pack by their marvellous stories, touching music and amazing performances.

Swades

We, the People

The byline is the opening phrase of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution and the movie echoes the sentiment of that great document throughout. This is by far my favourite Hindi movie of all time, the story of an NRI who returns to India in search of his nanny and his journey into the heart of India's villages where he finds his true vocation. Starring Shahrukh Khan, Gayatri. Director: Ashutosh Gowarikar. Music Director: A R Rahman. More on the movie at http://www.swades.com/index1024.html

Kal Ho Naa Ho

Tomorow May Never Come

This movie unexpectedly captured my attention partly because of the amazing music and partly due to stellar performances from the ensemble cast. The protagonist is a Indian-American girl from New York who lives with her family but is burdened with family tensions resulting in part from her father's death. The story tells of how she learns to love and deal with loss. Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan. Director: Nikhil Advani. Music Director: Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. Water

The denouement to Deepa Mehta's Elements trilogy, this is probably the most powerful critique of the treatment of women and widows in India I have ever seen. As the music heightens your senses and every shot pierces your soul, child widow Chuhiya's story is bound to break your heart. Starring: Lisa Ray, Jon Abraham and Seema Biswas. This is definitely one of the most hilarious tongue-in-cheek look at Bollywood with an amazing cast and a storyline that in the hands of a lesser director would have been rendered ridiculous -- filmi dreams and reincarnation!

Rock On!!

If you thought Bollywood can't rock, think again! Director Farhan Akhtar's acting debut is a masterpiece. The story of a rock band that falls apart just when it has its first taste of success, the plot weaves a tale of suppressed dreams and forgotten friendship. Hats off to director Abhishek Kapoor for giving us the best Hindi rock movie ever!!! The music by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy and lyrics by Javed Akhtar are crafted to perfection. Check out the music through the clips below. Destined to be a cult classic.

More movies worth watching

Some more Hindi movies that made an impression on me over the years.
Bombay
Set in the 1992 Bombay riots, a Hindu man and Muslim woman fall in love and get married against the wishes of their conservative families. As religious tensions build and explode in the winter of 1992, families are torn apart and lives lost in the bloodbath.
Being Cyrus
Rare performances from the stellar cast, Being Cyrus is one of those unique films that leaves you thinking about the movie's character long after you've left the theatre. Cyrus is a sculptor's apprentice who is having an affair with the sculptor's wife who in turn is swindling the sculptor with the help of the sculptor's estranged brother.
Dil Chatha Hai
The story of three college buddies and their quests to find love and sustain their friendship through the ups and downs of life.
Maachis
Set during the turbulent 80s in Punjab, the movie is a gripping portrayal of lost youth and innocence and the descending spiral brought on by hatred and violence.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Beautifully choreographed and shot in breathtaking Rajasthan/Gujarat, the plot centres around the ill-fated love of a student of classical music and his teacher's daughter.
Mangal Pandey: The Rising
A fictional account of the 1857 Uprising, the story revolves around the transformation of Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the East India company through his unlikely friendship with a British officer from a selfish cad to the revolutionary icon that he becomes.
Khosla ka Ghosla
An amazingly intelligent comedy of the aspirations of a middle-class Delhi household, the everyday problems they encounter and the unique solutions they devise to overcome the obstacles.
