Enter The World Of First-Class Mystery!

What it says: the best works and adaptations of Agatha Christie! Books, movies, audio books, and video games.

I Love Dame Agatha

Agatha Christie has been numero uno since my early teens. There are several "golden age" authors I enjoy, but Dame Agatha holds pride of place.

Her writing is clear and straightforward. So straightforward, she leads you up the garden path every time. Some people say "Oh, it's the least likely suspect". In Agatha's works, almost anyone can be that "least likely suspect".

If you haven't discovered Agatha Christie yet, now is the time. I've put together the best collection of her works, adaptations, and material on both her and her creations.

Sit in the comfy chair with your favorite munchies, and return to a period of quiet country villages, grand country homes....and murder.

The First Five Of The Top Ten

Murder on the Orient Express: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)

My all-time favorite. It's totally outrageous and the most purely intellectual of all Poirot's cases. Not for claustrophobes, as most of the book takes place within two cars of a snow-bound train, the fabled Orient Express. Best bet: read the book, then watch the movie!

Death on the Nile (Hercule Poirot Mysteries)

Here Poirot takes a vacation in Egypt and runs up against murder. One of her more bloodthirsty novels, as five bodies are hauled off the steamer Karnak at the end. Very ingenious, and in some ways, also sad.

And Then There Were None

Christie's novel of suspense. Ten people arrive on Indian Island, become stranded, and die one by one. It's fascinating to watch how she manages to pull this off without it becoming ridiculous. A creepy novel. Be careful whose invitations you accept!

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)

Probably her most controversial work, it aroused plenty of debate in its time. Poirot has retired to a sleepy village to grow vegetable marrows (squash), but rapidly becomes involved in the death of the local squire. The solution is a real shocker; I almost fell off my chair when I read it.

Murder at the Vicarage: A Miss Marple Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)

Miss Marple's first full-length case. Nobody liked Col. Protheroe, and everyone has a motive. It's fun watching Miss Marple through the eyes of narrator Leonard Clement, the vicar. Suspicion flies everywhere, but "Aunt Jane" clears it all up at the end.

Christie Quote

Agatha ChristieDespite writing about death and killing in many ways, usual and unusual, Dame Agatha was actually unmoved by it all. In McCalls magazine, 1969, she said: "Murder has no emotional connotation for me." Perhaps that's why she was so good at it!

More Up Her Sleeve

After the first bunch, it was harder to choose. Much harder! Dame Agatha put out a lot of quality work, and deciding on the remaining five took a lot of thought. I finally managed it, though. You won't go wrong with any of these.

The Second Five Of The Top Ten

Mysterious Affair at Styles: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Agatha Christie Collection)

Poirot's first case. Here he hooks up with Arthur Hastings, on medical leave from World War I. Wonderful for the picture of a rural village. Despite mention of gas rationing, paper recycling, and reduced staff, you'd hardly know a war was on. They even have tea on the lawn! While a little over-complicated, a great first appearance for Poirot.

The Body in the Library: A Miss Marple Mystery

This book gives excellent portraits of Miss Marple's best friends, Col. and Dolly Bantry. It's in their library the body is found, and the Colonel comes under suspicion. Dolly and Miss Marple travel to a nearby resort to clear him and find the right perpetrator.

The Sittaford Mystery (St. Martin's Minotaur Mysteries)

Also known as "Murder At Hazelmoor". Captain Trevelyan is murdered and his nephew arrested for the crime. His fiancee, Emily Trefusis, works to clear him. She's one of Christie's "spunky heroines", and a very sharp lady. When she finds the "ultimate clue", she does exactly the right thing with it (yay!). A fun read all the way through.

Death in the Clouds (Hercule Poirot)

Christie takes an exotic murder weapon, a poisoned blow dart, combines it with seemingly-impossible murder (the scene is an airplane), and creates a little gem. Also fascinating for the look it gives at early air travel.

The ABC Murders

Poirot and Hastings are on the track of a serial killer who signs himself ABC (a British railway guide). Unusually, the book switches between Hastings's narrative and the doings of one Alexander Bonaparte Cust. Is he ABC? Did ABC kill all the victims? You'll have to read this to find out!

Dame Agatha Adds Life To Fiction

Agatha ChristieIn "Death In The Clouds", Jean Dupont tells Jane Grey about an English couple in Syria. The wife fell seriously ill, but both agreed that her husband should go on and report to his job, leaving her behind.
This actually happened to Dame Agatha. She was the one who became sick, and it was her husband, Max Mallowan, who went on to the archeological dig alone. The native doctor was outraged!

The Second Five On Audio Books

Yep, you can get these as audio books if you prefer. Dame Agatha is everywhere!

Agatha Christie Short Story Collections

Dame Agatha was adept with short stories, too. These should keep you entertained and guessing for awhile.

The Labors of Hercules (Hercule Poirot)

Poirot emulates his namesake with 12 cases that are an updated version of Hercules's 12 labors. Cleverly done, especially using ugly rumors as a modern Lernean Hydra.

Miss Marple: The Complete Short Stories

The Best 3 Agatha Christie Movies

Many movies have been made from Dame Agatha's work. These three are the best of them all.

Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express

Lumet produces a marvelous adaptation of the book, recreating all the elegance of the luxurious Orient Express. Staying faithful to the novel, and presenting top stars of the day, this movie is a real treat. Finney is marvelous as Poirot; he really looks the way I always pictured the Belgian detective. Not to be missed; first-class all the way.

And Then There Were None

ATTWN has been filmed three times, but the first movie is unquestionably the best. It really brings the book to life (and death!), with excellent performances by everyone. For the movie (and the play), Christie came up with a different (and possibly more satisfying) conclusion. Amazon has multiple offerings for the film; this one has the best viewing quality.

Amazon Price: $9.98 (as of 01/03/2010) Buy Now

Witness For the Prosecution

Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. What more could you want, except maybe a terrific adaptation of Christie's short story? A great suspense movie with top performances and a shocking twist at the end.

Agatha Christie by Gillian Gill

Absolutely the best book about Agatha Chrstie. Gill analyzes in particular the Mary Westmacott books, and gives what is the best understanding of the complex woman Dame Agatha was. WARNING! Contains spoilers for some of Christie's best works. Only if you're familiar with her books (especially many in the top ten) should you read this one.

Why Read When You Can BE?

Be the detective, that is. Three of Christie's novels have been adapted as adventure games: And Then There Were None, Murder On The Orient Express, and Evil Under The Sun.

Don't worry if you've read the books (or even if you haven't). The designers changed some things around, and the guilty party you may expect is likely to be quite innocent.

They also added in some puzzles/clues/etc. that aren't in the original novels. So playing the games will be a new experience. And if you haven't read any of them yet, the original books won't be spoiled for you.

I haven't played any of them myself. I'm just, well, too much of a purist, and like things as they are. But don't let that stop you. It's not every day you get the chance to enter Christie's world of mystery!

And Then There Were None

Happily, your character is not one of the invitees. That doesn't mean you're complete safe, though! REMINDER: The Wii version is pre-order right now.

The Mousetrap

The longest-running play in the world - coming up on 55 years! - The Mousetrap began as a 30-minute radio play written by Christie especially for Queen Mary's birthday.

Later Dame Agatha expanded it into a full-length stage play, and it opened at the Ambassador Theater in 1952. The Mousetrap moved to its current home, St. Martin's Theater, in 1974.

The play has become a big tourist attraction, and if you're going to visit London, by all means see it.

Hello, great page! I like that you have advised readers that the PC games won't spoil the books for anyone who has yet to read them. There are also two "hidden object" games playable on PCs and Macs that I know of. Peril at End House and Death on the Nile. I have purchased them both as online downloads but I'm afraid to play them more than part way through, because I don't know yet if they will spoil the books for me. :-) I intend to read both books soon. If you have any advice similar to the PC game advice (or of course, reviews of the hidden object games) that'd be great! Cheers....-steven

Susan, heh. I was a little more broad in my reading, as I went through a lot of SF as a teen. But AC has always been one of my favorites.

Naiza, I think Dame Agatha is more famous now than when she was living. Her works have shown up in an astonishing variety of formats. Which makes her works accessible to everyone, and that's a good thing!

Glad you all enjoyed the lens.

Phoenix - you obviously know what you're talking about as you picked And Then There Was None as one of your favorites. :-) Mysteries (and books with horses - what is it with young girls) were about all I read as a child/teenager, and I made it through the entire Christie bibliography. Top drawer, chap!
