The Best Comfort Food Sandwich

Grilled Cheese vs. Peanut Butter and Jam

Comfort food. It's what we all turn too when we need that warm, filling feeling in our stomachs that helps us feel better. But what is it exactly?

The Wiktionary defines comfort food as:

1. Certain foods that people associate with their formative years, or with "home"; frequently simple home-cooked style food, and often the staple of diners and other informal restaurants.

2. Food that one eats to feel comfort or alleviate stress rather than to receive nutrition.

Sure, there's some science behind comfort foods. Carb cravings, vitamin deficiencies and the like, but I never thought that the science of food really captured what comfort food is to the people who eat it.

There are as many different comfort foods as there are people, but two that come up quite frequently for me are both sandwiches. Grilled cheese sandwiches and peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

So, without saying anything against the other comfort foods, I challenge these two sandwiches to a duel to see who is victorious!

What comfort food is for me

My Lunch for TomorrowWell, as much as I might not always love the health value of it, comfort food is the simple food I turn to when I've had a rough day or am feeling under the weather.

I think in a way I learned some of my comfort food choices from my parents, specifically from my father. I think he has two comfort foods that he really treasures, and I love them too:

Peanut butter and jam sandwiches (PB&Js) and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Both of these sandwiches have a lot of similarities:

  • The require little preparation time and no exotic ingredients

  • They are very simple and quick to make

  • They appeal to and satisfy bread and carbohydrate cravings

They have differences too:

  • PB&J is sweet while a grilled cheese is more salty/flavorful in taste

  • PB&J is a combination of tastes while a grilled cheese tends to be made with a single taste (unless you go deluxe)

  • Grilled cheese involves cooking while a PB&J does not

And now we will see them battle for comfort food sandwich supremacy!

The many faces of grilled cheese

We all have our own traditions on how to make a "proper" grilled cheese sandwich, but there are some different options out there. Take a look at some of the standard (and non-standard) recipes for grilled cheese that people have put on YouTube.

The secrets of Peanut Butter and Jam sandwiches

A definite contender for the comfort food crown, PB&J sandwiches are simple and tasty. However, even with something so simple, people still posted recipes online for YouTube (does anything not make it onto YouTube?).

I have noticed that some people jazzed up their videos for these recipes though, so be prepared to smile.

Who do you say wins the comfort food challenge?

Do grilled cheese sandwiches beat out peanut butter and jam sandwiches for the comfort food crown?

Heck yeah! Nothing makes a rough day feel better than a good grilled cheese sandwich.

Mickie_G says:

Love a grilled cheese. Add a fresh slice of a homegrown tomato and it is sheer heaven on bread.

Ramkitten says:

This was a tough decision, but I've gotta go with good ol' grilled cheese. I haven't actually had one of either in a long time, so maybe I should make one of each today and be sure.

jennysue19 says:

yes, but he grilled cheese has to be real buffalo mozzarella with tomato and pesto and the bread has to be Italian panini, nicely cooked on a proper panini grill

Not a chance! PB&J is the king of comfort foods and always will be!

LoKackl says:

Gosh! It's hard to say! But, push come to shove, PB&J if for no other reason than it's quicker!!

partybuzz says:

I think both, but if I have to choose, it would PB&J.

SolarFeline says:

Nuthin beats a pb&j sandwich with a nice cold glass of chocolate milk!

Baked potatoe is number 1, but a grilled cheese is a close runner up.

On the salty side, my favorite comfort food is a bag of Cheesy Doritos. Then, I'd probably want ice cream! :D

Comfort + food = a happy me! Thank goodness some one else considers the yummy aspects of food as well as the emotional ones as worthwhile. We eat for more than amino acids!

It may sound strange but I love Greek Chicken Soup (Avgolemono soup). It's the one thing I reach for when I am sick, tired, cranky, hungry... Like a good comfort food I could eat it at any time!
