Your Dog is an Individual - Train Him Like One!

You know what they say: "A dog is a man's best friend." So, how is your best friend doing in the behavior department? Does he follow your every wish and command or is it the other way around?

Just as each person is an individual, so is each dog. Even dogs of the same breed may turn out to be entirely different from what all the "experts" say they should be. And, if you have a dog blend, otherwise known as a mutt, you are definitely working with a one-of-a-kind dog.

The Everything Dog Training and Tricks Book

Your particular dog may be easily trainable and follow your directions implicitly. If so, be thankful and amazed. It probably won't happen with your next dog.

On the other hand, your dog may be a strong candidate for obedience school if he happily runs away every time you tell him to sit.

And, if obedience school doesn't work out, you can always call in an expert. Nowadays, you can find dog training
experts in many different specialties.

DIY Dog Training

for those with limited funds or very obedient dogs

Whether it's training your puppy in basic dog behavior or helping your adult dog to overcome a problem, DIY dog training is a good place to start. Read a well-recommended dog training book, find all the supplies they suggest, and get going.

If you have a purebred dog, it's a good idea to find dog training materials specifically recommended for that breed. Otherwise, any general book should work fine for you.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when training your dog:

1. Be patient. Remember that your dog is trying to learn something new and may not grasp it immediately. Dog training also involves training the owner to deal with the dog in a kind manner.

2. Don't try to teach everything at once. Give your dog a chance to focus on one particular skill. Once he has that one down, then move on to something else.

3. Be consistent. Dogs are creatures of habits so if you maintain a regular schedule of training, your dog will soon learn what you are trying to teach.

Above all, make your dog training experience enjoyable for both you and your pet.

Dog Obedience Training

Always a Good Foundation

You've had your new puppy for a few months now and you can see that you need help in training him how to act. Dog obedience school is an excellent option.

Maran Illustrated Dog Training
(Maran Illustrated)

Obedience school will help your dog learn how to behave in public - both with people and other dogs. It also helps the dog's owner learn how to work properly with the dog during training outside of class.

The best way to locate a good obedience school is to ask for recommendations from friends or your veterinarian. Find out what type of training methods will be used during the class and be sure that you agree with them.

Make the commitment to attend all of the class sessions so that your dog will get the most benefit from the training. Before long, you should be proudly standing there as your dog receives his diploma!
