Flax Seed Benefits
Not only did that diagnosis make me take notice, but also the fact that my father recently had a heart attack, as well as the family history of heart disease.
Flax seed has been proven to be beneficial in preventing heart disease, and lowering cholesterol.
Flax seed can also help to reduce the risks of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.
Here is what you will find in that tiny Flax seed:
Omega-3 essential fatty acids: those are the "good" fats, you want those! Omega-3 have been shown to be have great health effects on our hearts.
Lignans: these have both plant estrogen, and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains more lignans than other plant foods.
Fiber: Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.
You could even go as far as saying (which quite a few people are) that flaxseed is a miracle food!
I have been gathering recipes, and learning how and where to add flax seed in order to get the benefits.
I will share some of those ways here that not only I love, but my whole family does as well!

Flax Seed Health Cookies
Here's a cookie you won't feel guilty about

- Serves: Makes approx 3 Dozen Cookies
- Prep Time: 15 Minutes
- Total Time: 30 Minutes
Here's what you will need:
(note: feel free to add raisins, chocolate chips, etc. I've been playing around with this recipe and this is the one we love the most!)
Ingredients
- 1 cup margarine
- 2 cups of brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 2 cups of whole wheat flour
- 1/2 tsp. of salt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 cup of wheat germ
- 1/4 cup cup of flax seed
- 2 cups of Bran Flakes cereal
- 2 cups of shredded coconut
- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts
- 2 cups of oatmeal
- 1/2 cup Rice Krispies cereal
- 1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds
Instructions
Cream together margarine and sugar. Add the eggs, vanilla and milk. Mix well.
Sift together the flour, salt, baking powder and soda. Then add to the margarine mixture.
Add in the remaining ingredients, it will be seem like there is a lot of ingredients, but they will mix together.
Drop by spoonfulls onto greased pan and press slightly.
(I prefer to use a stoneware pan, then you don't have to grease it as well I use a small sccop that has a press out instead of dropping from spoon).
Bake at 350 F for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

I found this recipe at The Mature Women's Centre here in Winnipeg.
It's an easy to make soup that the whole family will enjoy.
They won't even notice how loaded full of "good for you" stuff is in there, they'll just notice good!
Enjoy and Keep Healthy!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 onion
- finely chopped
- 1 medium carrott
- finely chopped
- 1/2 green pepper
- inely chopped
- 1 stalk of celery
- finely chopped
- 5 cups of boiling water
- 1/3 cup low sodium chicken soup base
- 2 tsp granulated garlic
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 tsp. worcestershire sauce
- 28 oz. can of tomatoes with herbs and spices (break up the tomatoes)
- 1/3 cup orzo pasta or any other small soup pasta
- 1/3 cup dried lentils
- rinsed
- 1 tsp white sugar
- 1/3 cup flax seed
Instructions
In a large pot, over medium-low heat, melt butter.
Add onion, carrot, celery and green pepper. Saute gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add boiling water, soup base, garlic, bay leaf, worcestershire sauce, tomatoes, orzo and lentils.
Stir together.
Slowly simmer for 1 hour with lid ajar, stirring occasionally until lentils are soft.
Add sugar and flax seed.
Stir again and then serve.
Mmmm, and good for you!

Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups of ice cubes
- 1/2 cup of plain Greek Yoghurt
- 1 Avocado
- 1 Ripe Banana
- 1 1/2 cups of fresh orange juice (from 3 oranges)
- 1/4 cup of honey
- 1/4 cup flax seed
Instructions
Put all ingredients in a blender and mix till smooth.
Simple!
