How Do You Determine Which Is the Best Ground Coffee?

There are so many different coffee variations these days. A simple stroll down the coffee isle at the grocery store gives you a whole section of different ground coffee selections. There are dark roasts, medium roasts, breakfast blends, and flavored roasts just to name a few. Out of all these types of ground coffee, how do you figure out which one is the best? Arabica and robust are the two main types of coffee bean. They are most commonly grown and harvested in Colombia, Mexico, or Hawaii. Once the beans are harvested from the plant, they are shipped to the manufacturing facility where they will be roasted, ground, packaged, and then shipped to various stores all over the world. In addition to the ground coffee varieties, these coffee beans are also sold in packages that contain the whole bean, which is the choice for people who like to make their own ground coffee at home.

There are different roast levels for the common types of ground coffee. There is a light roast, medium roast, and dark roast. The light roast has a lighter taste and higher acid level. The medium roast, also called the classic roast for many ground coffee brands, has a sweeter taste that is a bit stronger and has a near perfect acid and aroma blend. The dark roast has a distinguishing strength where you can easily taste the roasted flavor of the bean.

In addition to those common roasts, ground coffee is also available in specialty roasts. French roasts are typically a lot darker and stronger, although they are not the strongest roasts available. These types of ground coffee are often chosen for coffee shops that make espresso.

An Italian roast ground coffee is a bit stronger and darker than the French roast. These roasts are frequently chosen for espressos as well. The difference is in the taste that results from the dark roast; there is more of a roasted flavor.

Finally we come to the Spanish roast. Spanish roasted ground coffee is the darkest roast available. It is also the strongest flavor available, with the flavor having a bit of a bitter taste. The resulting coffee will be almost black in color and have a charcoal-ish taste and aroma.
