Learn How To Choose The Right Cage For Your Hamster.

There are a range of options to choose from when buying hamster cages. The main consideration is the type of material you want the cage to be made from. There are some great plastic options with inbuilt tunnels and running wheels to keep your hamster well exercised. If you choose a more basic option, avoid wooden cages. Hamsters can easily chew through them with their powerful incisors and it can also become odorous from hamster.

The hamster cage should be filled with wood shavings or similar so the hamster can dig and fossick. This will also soak up a lot of the waste. Do make sure you change the shavings in your hamster cage on a regular basis as a dirty hamster cage can lead to all sorts of health problems for your pet. Make sure you don't use cedar shavings - these release aromatic oils that can be harmful to your hamster.

You need to ensure there is adequate space so there are dedicated spaces for your hamster to eat, go to the toilet and sleep. Try and give your hamster as much room as you possibly can - they'll really appreciate it.

Hamster Wheels

The Best Way To Keep Your Hamster Fit & Healthy

The running wheel is a simple, inexpensive way to ensure your hamster gets enough exercise, even in a small cage. It's an essential feature of any good hamster cage. As any hamster owner will tell you, hamsters love the running wheel.

Make sure it's made of sturdy enough material so the hamster does not easily chew through the rungs. Also, make sure it's not easy for your hamster to get their feet stuck in the wheel and thus become injured. Consult with your wheel retailer - they will usually stock several sizes of running wheels for different rodents - make sure your running wheel matches your hamster breed.

Hamster Care

Keeping Your Hamster on a Healthy Diet

When setting up your cage, it's important to consider their diet. First of all, your hamster needs a feeding bowl. Make sure this is not plastic or wood. As the hamsters teeth never stop growing, they never stop gnawing on whatever is available, and you don't want this to be their food bowl! Purchase a metal, porcelain or ceramic feeding bowl that's a decent weight so it doesn't tip over and soil the whole cage.

Hamsters are omnivorous and eat both meat and vegetables. In the wild, they primarily eat seeds, grains and some insects. A pet hamster will also eat corn, oats or wheat but make sure you don't ever give them too much additional vegetable matter as this may upset their delicate stomachs. As far as day to day food is concerned, standard hamster pellets will do fine. Make sure if you change pellet types that you do it gradually - they're very sensitive creatures and need to be acclimatised slowly to diet change.

Water Bottle OR Water Bowl?

Learn which is Best

A constant supply of clean, fresh water is the most important feature of your hamster cage. A water bottle attached to the side of the hamster cage is a much better solution than a water bowl - as water kept in a bowl can become quickly soiled and also poses a problem if you decide to breed hamsters as baby hamsters can fall in the bowl and drown. A hamster can quickly learn to use a water bottle with a steel ball bearing in the base of the spout. Make sure you change the water regularly.

Toilet Train Your Hamster

Toilet training your hamster is a lot easier than you might think, it's actually quite a simple thing to do. The first thing to do is after a few weeks from first getting your hamster, pay close attention to where your hamster is leaving most of the waste droppings. Once you've work out where in the cage most of the dropping are going, you can either add an extra layer of lining there or, you can get yourself a tray big enough to cover the area and fill the tray with pellet cat litter. Don't use kitty litter that turns into a big cluster, use the pellet style kitty litter so your hamster doesn't eat the litter & make him self sick. Before you know it your pet hamster will be using the litter tray and your days of cleaning a messy cage with be over.
